At one time, Ireland was covered with trees. Throughout the centuries the trees have been cut down, cleared for pastures and exports. We purchased a small plot of land in Ireland back in 2021 in partnership with Emerald Heritage who then planted trees on the combined lots of many people. A small way to help the earth, repopulate the forests, and preserve the Irish land for generations to come. Wili wili trees are some of the most noticeable native trees on the island of Maui. These unique large trees with orange bark blossom with orange, yellow, and green flowers - a beautiful sight to see! Unfortunately most of the trees died off due to an invasive wasp. Now that the pest is under control, the trees can thrive, but need to be propagated in nurseries like ours that are safe from non-native ungulates like goats, deer, pigs and cows. We are so thankful to the volunteers who attended our wili wili seed planting event and helped to plant 500 of these beautiful red seeds. It was wonderful to see our community put their hands and hearts together for the health of our island ecosystem. In honour of Earth month, we are celebrating the strides we’ve made in our reforestation program so far. Last year we planted around 6000 trees 🌳 Seedlings and cuttings of 36 different species were collected from our farm and surrounding areas before making their way to our nursery and then into the land. El pasado 18 de febrero realizamos un voluntariado para reforestar en la zona de los Guájares. En esta actuación realizada justo después de las lluvias de febrero, acudieron unos 30 voluntarios y se sembraron unas 400 bellotas previamente tratadas para su pronta germinación. La metodología fue bastante sencilla, nos dividimos en 3 grupos para cubrir la cara sur, norte y otra zona más cercana al camino de acceso. La siembra fue ubicada en las diferentes fajinas que hay por todo el entorno y que fueron realizadas unos meses antes en las actuaciones forestales. Las fajinas son haces de troncos dispuestos para contener el terreno de la escorrentía y la erosión. Las bellotas se sembraron allí para aprovechar el cobijo que suponen respecto a los animales como roedores o jabalíes y también por la humedad que mantiene este tipo de estructuras. Con picos se realizaban pequeños agujeros y se colocaban allí las bellotas de dos en dos. Nos sorprendió gratamente la cantidad y diversidad de vegetación que comenzaba a abrirse paso tanto de matorral bajo (aulaga, romero, cantueso, lentisco..)como pequeños cotiledones de pinos, brezos, lentiscos… La zona reforestada se marcó para monitorizarla y poder realizar el seguimiento de su evolución posterior. Dentro de poco volveremos a visitar el lugar y así comprobar que ha ocurrido en estos meses. Aux dernières nouvelles, la plantation prévue initialement au début du printemps avait dû être reportée car nous avions été notifiés qu'il s'agissait d'un site classé et aucun acteur de la vente n'avait pensé bon de nous en informer au moment de la signature... Mais il en faut plus pour nous décourager ! A couple years back, we helped fund a green house for Jesus & Daniel Navarro, who make @luneta_spirits San Luis Potosí expressions. The little agave babies are now growing and ready to be planted into the ground. The Navarro brothers have fenced off their land to protect it from roaming cattle, wild boars and other creatures that might eat the young agaves. The thing is that there has been 2 years of drought and, while the agaves only need water about once a month, they do need it to develop sugars and grow. Protégeons nos poumons verts ! 💚🌳 Pour la #Journéeinternationaledesforêts un état des lieux s'imposent : Les forêts du monde : un tiers de la Terre, mais inégalement réparties ! 31% de la surface terrestre est recouverte de forêts, soit un peu plus de 4 milliards d'hectares. Mais 5 pays seulement en possèdent plus de la moitié : la Russie, le Brésil, le Canada, les États-Unis et la Chine. Au global la superficie forestière a baissé de 4,7 millions d'hectares par an entre 2010 et 2020. Ce sont les forêts tropicales d'Afrique qui ont le plus décliné sur cette période, avec 3,9 millions d'hectares perdus par an, suivie de celles d'Amérique du Sud (2,6 millions d'hectares par an). Changement climatique et surexploitation sont les premières causes de ce recul. Et en France ? L'état des lieux de l'IFN est alarmant : Bien que la surface des forêts en France ait augmenté (principalement pour être exploitée), la qualité n'y est pas. 1.9 million trees for the Andes! 🏞️🎉 Celebrating International Day of Forests, we’re thrilled to announce that through our new project, TUI Forest Peru, we’re pledging to plant a total of 1.9 million trees in the famous Vilcanota mountain range in Peru. ⛰️🌲 🌱 20 tree nurseries will be created and managed by the indigenous communities of the high Andes to increase local participation in reforestation efforts and support local livelihoods. 🚧 TUI Forest Peru will also improve and maintain the infrastructure of nature trails on the popular Vilcanota Trek to increase the attractiveness of the trail for visitors and support over 10,000 local community members who use the trails themselves. The price paid for the carbon credit is much higher than the amount the indigenous communities on the ground actually receive - you know...the ones protecting and growing the forests. Secondly, as many as 90% of carbon offset projects have been reported to be worthless or having no positive impact on the planet. Not sure we’re comfortable with that either! Only to discover that even though 8.2million carbon credits were sold across 59 projects, credits worth a whopping $100million we might add, those forests had actually decreased in size. Now, imagine if $100 million had gone into the right projects and the right communities for high-end conservation and reforestation? How different the planet would look now! Thirdly, we don’t believe in selling carbon credits so that companies can continue to pollute over here, whilst planting a few shiny new trees over there. Exciting news: through being part of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, we have also now partnered with the Planet 2024 initiative! What’s this? We believe nature needs a voice, and sports can be a powerful platform! With the Paris Olympics fever building up, Planet 2024 showcases the way sports can be sustainable but also how we can use sports as a medium to spread the message of climate change and its impacts. So Planet 2024 was a natural fit for JUST ONE Tree. From football to tennis, sports are responsible for high emissions. It is reckoned that for example football stadiums with the construction of them and the transport for people to arrive there, can emit more than a million tonnes of CO2. It all adds up and there's an awful lot of impacts to consider. But don’t worry - there’s hope, because there are ways to curb these emissions by using green energy and more sustainable construction materials for sports stadiums. There are other sustainable avenues to explore too, from the clothes to the sports equipment! It is hoped with Planet 2024 we can show the world that like with any other industry, sports can be sustainable but can also be a sign of things to come. A change in the way we think. Deux pratiques existent : - Le remplacement : au lieu de planter une espèce locale, on choisit une nouvelle espèce plus méridionale. - L’hybridation, c'est-à-dire un croisement, par exemple, entre le mélèze d’Europe et le mélèze du Japon. Il s’agit alors juste d’un « coup de pouce » Mais la réalité est plus complexe et les dangers potentiels nombreux : ❌ Risques d'hybridation et de création d'écosystèmes combustibles : Certaines espèces méridionales sont plus économes en eau, produisent moins d'ombre et leur pouvoir régulateur thermique moindre. Leur feuillage plus sec et plus riche en molécules volatiles inflammables. ❌ Manque de connaissances scientifiques et d'études approfondies Bien que la pratique soit ancienne, elle n'a jamais été documentée, Il est difficile de mesurer si ces arbres supporteront le climat actuel dans leur nouvelle implantation et de manière plus large, l'impact de ce type de projet tant sur le plan climatique que sur l'évolution du patrimoine génétique de nos forêts. ❌ Détournement par la sylviculture industrielle pour des coupes rases et des plantations d'espèces à croissance rapide Certaines organisations prônent ce concept de migration assistée et le besoin de répondre à l'urgence climatique pour planter des espèces à croissance rapides et de surcroît subventionnées... ⚠️ Un dialogue urgent est nécessaire entre scientifiques, pouvoirs publics, exploitants forestiers et citoyens.
