First stop of day 2 on the NC500 route had to be John O’Groats to see the famous signpost. It looks like it’s had a new paint job 🤩 Our second stop of the day was to see Duncansby Stacks. The prominent Duncansby Stacks are believed to have stood there for 6000 years and are slowly eroding away into the North Sea. The tallest stack is 60m in height! Next up was Dunnet Head and on our drive to it, a stag ran in front of us 🦌 This is the most northerly part of mainland UK. The landscape really started to change between here and our next stop. It became mountainous landscapes surrounded by lochs, and the road takes you straight through the beauty😍 We pushed further along the north coast to the Ard Neakie Lime Kilns. Built in 1870, this is the remains of the limestone quarry. The 2 storey building was a ferry house. The quarry is located on Loch Eriboll of which the Loch itself holds some historical importance. This was the place where the 33 remaining U-boats surrendered at the end of World War 2. It is also one of the deepest sea lochs in Scotland! Our last attraction of the day was Smoo Cave. The word ‘Smoo’ comes from the Norse ‘smuga’ meaning hole or hiding place. The cave features a large skylight and beautiful waterfall. It was created by both sea and fresh water erosion. Artefacts found in the cave date back to the Iron Age, vikings and Neolithic times. We ended the day at Sango Sands Oasis campsite. Day 6 of our NC500 road trip adventure .... after a very windy and rainy night at Sango Sands we went straight to Smoo Cave which was only a few minutes drive. This is a nice little visit into the cave,we were the only ones here which was good. Its only small so doesn't take long to walk around. We got back in the van and made a quick stop at Balnakeil Beach. We didn't go down to this beach but enjoyed the view for a short while. Golden sand and clear blue sea 🌊 Next we pulled over again to snap a picture of Kylesku Bridge then we drove over it 😁 and had a pretty good scenic drive along choppy waters. We then ended up at Wailing Widow Falls (Loch Na Gainmhich Waterfall) which amazing! We firstly walked to the top of the falls then made our way down and across a pretty rocky path to below the falls. An absolute gem and we are so gald we visited thid place. Before setting off from Tongue today I had to call 111 as I’ve got a horrible throat infection and all the drs I tried contacting were closed. What amazing service I got, they sent an on call nurse out to meet me at a closed health centre 2 minutes from the campsite and she gave me some antibiotics- can’t believe the service - well done NHS Scotland ! It was a beautiful scenic drive to our next stop - Durness - Sango Sands Campsite. NC500 ROADTRIP - Day 4 Day 4 we woke up to the most amazing view and a beaming sun. Perfect weather to throw the back doors open and enjoy the perks of the bed being at the back of the van 😁 The wind was nice and minimal so I took the chance to send the drone up and try and get some good shots of the Dunnet Head Lighthouse and the surrounding area. I have included a video clip on this post for anyone interested in that.
