The beautiful beaches of the North coast in the Northwest Highlands 😍 Had the best weather for visiting the coast on Wednesday! Although the North Coast 500 route already seems to be busy with motor homes around every corner, the beaches are still absolutely stunning and almost deserted (at least at the moment, on a weekday at the beginning of May). Amazing soft white sand, clear, sometimes-turquoise sea, pretty seashells, and amazing scenery. Vor einem Jahr Schottland 2023. Roadtrip vom 19.04.2023 bis 17.05.2023 An der alten Straße parallel zur A387 nicht weit vom LOCH ASSYNT konnten wir uns für die Nacht aufstellen. Kurz hinter der Bogenbrücke endete der Weg. Am frühen Morgen fangen sich noch Wolken an der Bergkuppe. Einige Kilometer weiter erreichen wir KYLE OF DURNESS und steuern dann nach kurzem Stopp zu CACAO MOUNTAIN, wo wir "the best" HOT CHOCOLATE genießen. Das Team hinterm Tresen ist gut drauf und sehr freundlich. Weiter führt uns der Weg nach SANGORMORE und DURNESS. Im Jahr 2000 errichtete man hier den MILLENNIUM CAIRN. Schräg gegenüber vor der DURNESS VILLAGE HALL befindet sich eine JOHN LENNON Gedenkstätte. Als Junge verbrachte John viele Ferienfreizeiten in Durness. Die Inschrift ist ein Zitat aus IN MY LIFE von John und Paul. "There are places i remeber all my life All these places had their moments with lovers an friends In my life i've loved them all". Der NC500 folgend kamen wir dann an den CEANNABEINNE BEACH. Auf der Holzrampe im Bild nimmt man Anlauf für eine Seilbahnfahrt über den Strand. Vor dem Wasser sind einige Kabel der Bahn zu sehen. Der Blick auf das LOCH ERIBOLL verdeutlich noch einmal die Klarheit der Gewässer in Schottland. Kein Wunder, dass sich Fischzuchtbetriebe hier angesiedelt haben. 🌊 The beaches of north west Scotland 😍 I wish we had beaches like this on Skye! We spent four days in Durness last week, located along the very top of the Scottish mainland. Many people either just stop in Durness to see Smoo Cave, or maybe stay a night on their way around the North Coast 500. I think it’s well worth spending a bit more time there! I mean, John Lennon spent many of his holidays in Durness as a teenager and apparently always had a soft spot for the place so 👀. I did have a list of the things to do that was mostly a list of beaches to visit, however 😂. So obviously it was insanely windy the majority of the time 🫣. Thankfully we still managed to get out and about and even had a picnic in a sheltered area at Oldshoremore, which is about a 30 minute drive from Durness. I have so much to share about it, and what we’ve been doing on Skye since we got back. School’s back now so I’ll have some more time! ✨ Touring Smoo Cave on the NC500 Smoo Cave in Durness is one of the most popular stops on the North Coast 500. It’s open 365 days a year and it’s FREE to visit. However, I’d highly recommend a tour if it’s on when you go! The cave is formed of three chambers, with the first one being a large sea cave, and the other two being fresh water chambers and only fully accessible on the tour. It’s a short walk down to the huge cave opening, located basically underneath the road. There’s a small wooden walkway that you can view the second chamber from, which has an opening above that can become the site of a huge waterfall, depending on what happens further upstream. On our first visit the waterfall was so big that we got absolutely soaked with mist even from the viewing platform! Luckily we were staying in Durness for a few days and we managed to return on a day where the “waterfall” was but a drip. We took a tour with Fraser into across the second chamber on a boat, and then walked down through the third chamber to see where it’s also fed by water coming from underground. It was £10 per adult and £5 per child and lasted about half an hour but we learnt so much. It turns out Smoo Cave was home to likely thousands of people for thousands of years! It’s so hard to imagine all these people living there, but amazing to think about, and made visiting feel that much more special. The other cool thing is that Fraser and others are working to uncover what’s behind Smoo Cave, as they believe that there may have been more chambers in this cave system, including another large one behind the one you can currently walk in. They’re busy trying to excavate and get to it - it’s a slow process.
