🇨🇭 Bereits um 8.00 Uhr brechen wir zu einer rund 3-stündigen Wanderung um den See Loch Muick auf. Gleich zu Beginn begegnen wir einem Rudel von Hirschen, die friedlich grasen und werden wenig später von einem Schneegestöber überrascht. 🌨 Nach dieser wundervollen Wanderung geht die Reise weiter. 👍 Wir kommen an den Ruinen des Knock Castel vorbei, bevor wir Ballater erreichen. Hier füllen wir unseren Wassertank auf und fahren anschliessend vorbei am ehemaligen Wohnturm Corgarff Castle und den Aussichtspunkten 'The Watchers' und 'Still' nach Granrown-on-Spey, dem Ende der Snow Roads Scenic Route. 📷 Unser nächster Stopp sind die Clava Cairns, beeindruckende Steinhügelgräber, die von Steinkreisen umgeben sind und aus der Bronzezeit stammen. 🪦 Von hier geht es weiter nach Inverness, dem kulturellen Zentrum der schottischen Highlands. 🐮 Wir schlendern durch die Einkaufsstrassen und vorbei an der Kathedrale, dem Rathaus, dem Victorian Market und der alten Burg, bevor wir uns etwas ausserhalb einen Platz zum Übernachten suchen. 💤 🇬🇧 We set off at 8.00 a.m. for a 3-hour hike around Loch Muick. Right at the start, we encounter a herd of deer grazing peacefully and are surprised by a snow flurry a little later. 🌨 After this wonderful hike, the journey continues. 👍 We pass the ruins of Knock Castel before reaching Ballater. I may still be nursing a slight hangover - the whisky was free flowing and the champagne was exceptional - but oh what a night in the Highlands. ✨Dolphin watching at Chanonry Point, Fairy Glen Falls & Fyrish Monument - Start of the NC500✨ Wow the dolphins!! 🐬 We’d heard about Chanonry Point before the trip and how close we could get to wild dolphins but we never thought we’d be lucky enough to experience it! 🇨🇭 Letzte Nacht haben wir im Hafen von St. Andrews übernachtet. ⚓️ Heute Morgen erkunden wir zu Fuss die kleine Stadt, die für ihre zahlreichen Golfplätze, verwinkelten Kopfsteinpflasterstrassen und beeindruckenden Gebäude wie z.B. die Kathedrale bekannt ist. ⛪️ Anschliessend geht es in den Tentsmuir Forest und wir unternehmen einen ausgedehnten Spaziergang durch die einheimischen Kiefern und weitläufigen Sanddünen. 🌲 In Newport-on-Tay endet die Fife Coastal Route und wir fahren nach Blairgowrie, wo die Snow Roads Scenic Route durch den Cairngorms Nationalpark beginnt. 👍 Auf dem Weg zum Balmoral Castle, dem Schloss der königlichen Familie, kommen wir am Aussichtspunkt Connecting Contours, am Glenshee Ski Center und am ehemaligen Jagdschloss Braemar Castle vorbei. 🏰 Da wir morgen eine Wanderung rund um den Loch Muick unternehmen werden, fahren wir am späten Nachmittag zum Wanderparkplatz. Um uns herum grasen rund 50 Rothirsche, ein unglaublich tolles Erlebnis. 🦌 🇬🇧 Last night we slept in the harbor of St. Andrews. ⚓️ This morning we explore the small town on foot, which is known for its numerous golf courses, winding cobbled streets and impressive buildings such as the cathedral. ⛪️ Afterwards, we head to Tentsmuir Forest and take a long walk through the native pines and extensive sand dunes. 🌲 The Fife Coastal Route ends in Newport-on-Tay and we drive to Blairgowrie, where the Snow Roads Scenic Route through the Cairngorms National Park begins. 👍 On the way to Balmoral Castle, the castle of the royal family, we pass the Connecting Contours viewpoint, the Glenshee Ski Center and the former hunting lodge Braemar Castle. 🏰 As we are going on a hike around Loch Muick tomorrow, we drive to the hikers' parking lot in the late afternoon. Another one that's been on the list for a long time. We hadn't realised how close it was when we were working in loch Lomond last year. There are some places in Scotland where you get a sense of something otherworldly. Like you're stood on the boundary between our world and the Fae world. You get that shivery feeling in your bones and the urge to look over your shoulder. The Devil’s Pulpit is definitely such a place, with its blood red water and dripping mossy walls illuminated by shafts of sunlight from way above. The devils Pulpits is a collapsed cave system forming a beautiful gorge, cutting deep down into layers of red sandstone. It has many legends and stories surrounding the place from the Devil preaching his unholy sermons to the Monks of Tintern, in the hopes that he could tempt them away from their religion, as the red water swirled around his cloven feet ,to the stories of the Swan pool which is said to be haunted by the apparition of a ghostly woman carrying her child. This isn’t a long walk, nor is it an easily accessible one. The descent down to the water is treacherous over wet slimy steps and large boulders. You need to be prepared to get very wet and muddy but it's definitely worth it. Like a lot of wonderful and old secret places, this one has been used and abused since the pandemic. The council has taken measures to help protect the area but folks please take your litter home and don't park on the side of the road blocking it for residents. Remember you're on private land so stick to the footpath and don't be climbing over the farmers fences and wrecking them. This is a special place and should be treated as such. 🇨🇭 Nach einem tollen Morgenspaziergang sehen wir uns das Aberdour Castle und die daneben liegende Kirche St. Fillans an. ⛪️ Danach fahren wir durch die Hafenstadt Kirkcaldy zum Earlsferry Beach, der die Dörfer Earlsferry und Elie verbindet. 🏖 Um die Mittagszeit erreichen wir das Fischerdorf Anstruther. In der preisgekrönten Fischbar gönnen wir uns eine köstliche Portion Fish and Chips. 🐟 Von hier aus starten Bootsausflüge zur Isle of May. Das Naturschutzgebiet beherbergt Kegelrobben, eine riesige Papageientaucher-Kolonie und andere Seevögel. 🦭 Normalerweise sind diese Touren 2 - 3 Wochen im Voraus ausgebucht. Aber heute sind noch ein paar Plätze frei und so entscheiden wir uns spontan, mitzufahren. Die Überfahrt ist wegen der hohen Wellen sehr abenteuerlich und dauert etwa 1 Stunde. Anschliessend haben wir 2.5 Stunden Zeit, die Insel zu Fuss zu erkunden. 🥾 Da die Papageientaucher gerade ihre Eier in Höhlen ausbrüten, sehen wir nur sehr wenige von ihnen. Der Ausflug lohnt sich aber trotzdem. 👍 🇬🇧 After a great morning walk, we visit Aberdour Castle and the church of St. Fillans next to it. ⛪️ We then drive through the harbor town of Kirkcaldy to Earlsferry Beach, which connects the villages of Earlsferry and Elie. 🏖 We reach the fishing village of Anstruther around lunchtime. We treat ourselves to a delicious portion of fish and chips in the award-winning fish bar. 🐟 Boat trips to the Isle of May depart from here. The nature reserve is home to grey seals, a huge colony of puffins and other seabirds. 🦭 Normally these tours are fully booked 2 - 3 weeks in advance. But today there are still a few places available and so we spontaneously decide to go along. The crossing is very adventurous due to the high waves and takes about 1 hour. Afterwards, we have 2.5 hours to explore the island on foot. 🥾 As the puffins are currently incubating their eggs in caves, we only see very few of them. 🇨🇭 Nach einer schönen Morgenrunde mit den Hunden im Galloway Forest Park machen wir uns auf den Weg in Richtung Edinburgh. 🌲 Wir fahren soweit möglich an der Küste entlang, vorbei an hübschen Dörfern und Städten und einigen Schlössern. 🏰 Edinburgh lassen wir aus. Wir werden die Hauptstadt Schottlands später besuchen. 👍 In Kincardine startet die Fife Coastal Route, eine 124 km lange Küstenstrasse, der wir folgen wollen. 🚐 Nicht weit von der Kleinstadt entfernt liegt der Devilla Forest mit seinen 4 Seen. Wir spazieren auf dem Red Squirrel Trail, sehen aber leider keine Eichhörnchen. 🐿 Danach fahren wir nach Culross, einer malerischen und historischen Stadt mit Blick auf den Meeresarm Firth of Forth. Nach einem tollen Rundgang sehen wir uns in Dunfermline die Überreste des Benediktinerpalastes aus dem 11. Jahrhundert an und legen anschliessend in Queensferry einen Fotostopp bei der ikonischen Brücke Forth Bridge ein. 🌁 Gleich neben dem Strand von Silver Sands finden wir einen tollen Übernachtungsplatz. 🏖 🇬🇧 After a lovely morning walk with the dogs in Galloway Forest Park, we set off in the direction of Edinburgh. 🌲 We drive along the coast as far as possible, past pretty villages and towns and a few castles. 🏰 We skip Edinburgh. We will visit the capital of Scotland later. 👍 The Fife Coastal Route starts in Kincardine, a 124 km long coastal road that we want to follow. 🚐 Devilla Forest with its 4 lakes is not far from the small town. We walk along the Red Squirrel Trail, but unfortunately don't see any squirrels. 🐿 We then drive to Culross, a picturesque and historic town overlooking the Firth of Forth. There are many things in life that can wait , but the sunset isn't one of them. Make sure you get out there and witness it for yourself. Yesterday I was on the late shift and had been sneaking peek out of the window whilst I cashed up. When I saw the sun hit the mountains I locked up and grabbed Sam and we headed to the waters edge. We watched the sun go down together and when I left to go back and finish shutting up the shop I was surprised to realise we were the only ones watching the sun go down. I walked back to reception past caravans and tents with TVs and phones blooming out and wondered if any of them realised what they had missed. 🇨🇭 Heute Morgen um 7.30 Uhr bringt uns die Fähre von Belfast in etwas weniger als 2.5 Stunden nach Cairnryan in Schottland. ⛴️ Vom Fährhafen aus fahren wir in den Galloway Forest Park, wo wir eine fantastische Wanderung um den schmalen Süsswassersee Loch Trool unternehmen. 🌲 Im April 1307 fand hier während des Ersten Schottischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges das Gefecht von Glen Trool statt. Heute markiert der Bruce's Stone den Ort der ersten siegreichen Schlacht von Robert the Bruce. ⚔️ Auf halber Strecke machen wir eine Pause und geniessen das angenehme Wetter ohne starken Wind und mit ein paar Sonnenstrahlen. ⛅️ Als wir zum Parkplatz zurückkommen, beschliessen wir, hier im schönen Wald zu übernachten. 😍 Den Rest des Tages verbringen wir damit, 'Fuchur' 🚐 zu putzen und den weiteren Verlauf unserer Reise zu planen. 💻 🇬🇧 This morning at 7.30 a.m. the ferry takes us from Belfast to Cairnryan in Scotland in just under 2.5 hours. ⛴️ From the ferry port, we drive to Galloway Forest Park, where we go on a fantastic hike around the narrow freshwater lake Loch Trool. 🌲 In April 1307, the Battle of Glen Trool took place here during the First War of Scottish Independence. Another few things ticked off the list! Having spent the latter half of last year using the van in its “nearly finished” state it was time for a bit of a strip out and get some more jobs done. Upon removal of the lining panels it was nice to find the van and all insulation bone dry despite the horrendous weather we’ve had in the U.K. for the past.. forever. Got the last of the carpet trimming at the rear complete, the spot lights fitted and the headlining trimmed in grey alcantara. Really happy with how it turned out, I was keen to stay away from the over done hardwood battens especially for the additional weight they’d add. Every inch counts… A bit more surgery to the rear door of the van, removing just enough steel to create a pocket in the door for the rear wheel of a bike to live whilst retaining all the strength. This additional 60mm is the difference between my bike fitting and not! 😬. We have been out of action over the last couple of weeks and have been missing out on time in the van. We took the plunge and bought another kayak to add to the collection, so now we have 2 inflatable kayaks 😁 Even though the weather was absolutely rubbish today, we decided that getting out on the kayaks was the only thing that would help our mental health, so off we went to loch venachar and had a blast! Well.. Views of the loch from our walk along a short section of the West Highland Way. It's April but we're still waking up to a light dusting of snow now and again. Spring is slowly moving North and we're starting to see signs of it in the small wild flowers opening up amongst the short blades of grass.
