Some sessions brings in a lot of intuitions and clears out many thoughts. This was one such the tratak meditation bought in magical energy. Sciatica, a very common condition among Americans today, affects about 40% of people in the U.S. during their lifetime. It is a condition that occurs from a pinched sciatic nerve. It causes pain to radiate along the sciatic nerve which has its roots in your lower back, and goes through the hips and buttocks, all the way down to each leg. A Harvard Medical School article states that practicing yoga for sciatica pain, as a preventive measure itself, is a good idea. A study conducted in 2018 showed that 76.8 percent of people practicing yoga for one month experienced pain relief. These are a few good yoga poses for Sciatica: 1. Bridge Pose: This asana strengthens the lower back, hips, and thighs. It also opens up the hip flexors and relieves back pain. 2. Cat-cow pose: This is a great asana for back pain. It relieves tightness, improves back flexibility, and provides relief to stiffness and pain in the lower back. 3. Downward-facing Dog:‍ This asana has a lengthening effect on the back, while also stretching and strengthening the back muscles. 4. Legs up on the wall pose: This is a relaxing asana that alleviates tension from the back and legs. Staying here for a few minutes improves blood circulation from the legs back up to the circulatory system, which often gets affected due to the imbalance in the nerves. 5. Sitting Half Spinal Twist: This spinal twist provides relief for lower back pain caused due to compression of the sciatic nerve. The asana strengthens the back, and spinal nerves and releases stiffness in the hips. Other yoga practices one can do include breathing practices like alternate nostril breathing to relax and balance the system. Sciatica pain is caused by an irritation, inflammation, pinching or compression of a nerve in the lower back. The most common cause is a herniated or slipped disk that causes pressure on the nerve root. Most people with sciatica get better on their own with time and self-care treatments. The symptoms of sciatica include: > Moderate to severe pain in lower back, buttock and down your leg. > Numbness or weakness in your lower back, buttock, leg or feet. > Pain that worsens with movement; loss of movement. > “Pins and needles” feeling in your legs, toes or feet. How is sciatica treated? The goal of treatment is to decrease your pain and increase your mobility. Depending on the cause, many cases of sciatica go away over time with some simple self-care treatments. Self-care treatments include: > Appling ice and/or hot packs: First, use ice packs to reduce pain and swelling. Apply ice packs or bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel to the affected area. Apply for 20 minutes, several times a day. Switch to a hot pack or a heating pad after the first several days. Apply for 20 minutes at a time. If you’re still in pain, switch between hot and cold packs – whichever best relieves your discomfort. > Performing gentle stretches: Learn proper stretches from an instructor with experience with low back pain. Sunday Morning Workshop - Sciatica Relief. Sunday 2nd August 8.30-10am Join me this coming Sunday at a slightly later time of 8.30am for a class focusing on movements which help relieve sciatica. Most of us at some point in our lives have probably struggled with a bout of sciatica which can be so painful and really disabling. It often shows up on one side of the body and is much to do with our postural habits. You don't have to have sciatica to do the class - it will be interesting for you anyway, and may give you tips for the future if every you get sciatica or you may be able to give guidance to others suffering with it, with what you learn in the class. The class will still include many of our usual practises of pranayama and asanas but with specific moves for sciatica relief. The front-split ( Hanumanasana) is a combination of hip and hamstring flexibility, mobility and strength. Its taken me a long time and much effort even to reach this stage, have a long way to still go, to have both the legs absolutely flat and hips squared. No, this asana is not for every body type, its important to approach this with baby-steps. But if this is what you would like to do, persist on practicing. If I who began yoga late can at-least be here with practice, I truly believe anyone who practices regularly, can. Raising the hands gives the legs an extra stretch.
