There's a big issue in the yoga world blindly recommending pigeon or other hip-opening poses as a "fix" for sciatica. This is a huge source of misinformation! Sciatica is a widely accepted catch-all term that people use to describe pain in the back and hip, radiating down the leg. But "sciatica" isn't a diagnosis. Most cases result from irritation to the sciatic nerve at the lumbar spine, however, people are quick to call almost any pain down the back of the leg sciatica, whether it is or not. Sciatica symptoms can arise from several causes, including lumbar disc herniation, lumbar stenosis, SI joint issues, or muscle spasm just to name a few. Some conditions can even mimic sciatic pain. This class is designed for anybody who experiences tightness or discomfort in their hips and sciatic nerve area. It will encourage mobility and range of movement using the healing tool of pranayama, the breath. You will need a belt for your practice- any kind of strap which is flexible will suffice. Why would I take a yoga therapy training if Iโ€™m teaching vinyasa and prenatal classes at the moment? โ € The short answer thatโ€™s because headstand in yoga is just a tip on an iceberg๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‰. โ € The potential of yoga to heal the low back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder tension is immerse. โ € And Iโ€™m like many of you, can constantly flow through challenging vinyasas ignoring pains in particular parts of my body. Yet, when you slow down and let yourself breathe and move slowly, there is no space to run from the physical aches. Here you have a great opportunity to observe them, study them and learn how to release them. โ € During the four days I healed all the places of my tension, accept one, which I probably need to get an X-ray for to be checked fully. Yet, I learnt exactly what movements trigger that spot, in which directions it limits my range of motion and how can I engage the muscles not to exaggerate it. Oh and wait, I could feel it in my vinyasas for couple of months but I didnโ€™t have time to truly examine it and kept ignoring it๐Ÿ™ˆ. This is the power of slow practice! Basically, I just saved myself from a potential injury because now I know how to work around it until I can go to the hospital for a proper check up. โ € And there is also something else that came up... We all love to feel our body strong while flowing through fast vinyasas, yet it is even more empowering to feel inner softness as you move through slow class. Itโ€™s yin and yang โ˜ฏ๏ธ and the balance isnโ€™t there without both๐Ÿ˜‰. โ € Stay tuned, Iโ€™ll be sharing throughout the week my insights from the training. โ € Special thank you to @daniibarrayoga, the training was so much better than I even expected!

I have a new class up on @yoga_international The Build a Butt series is designed for people who have pelvic health and/or low back issues. Have good glute function doesnโ€™t solve everything but it can certainly help! I don't know about you guys, but I have felt unbelievably lazy this week. I don't know if it's because it's been raining here in NYC all week or what, but I haven't wanted to get off the couch. The good news is, you can still do yoga and lay down in bed on those days when you're not feeling up to it. This video was sent out to my mailing list a while back (which btw are you on it yet? Link is in the bio), but I feel like everyone else missed out, so Iโ€™ve put it on my website for everyone to enjoy FOR FREE! The link is in the bio under Free Online Yoga Classes.
