If time has been slipping through your fingers lately and you can’t seem to catch up with the calendar, it’s a good sign that you are too focused on either the past or the future and not enough on the present. Numerous studies (and personal experience) show that if you want to feel like you have more time, then you need to be more present in the now. At first, these moments in the now will be brief, but with practice, you’ll get more and more aware of where your time is going (hello, doom scrolling). The more aware you are, the more you are living in the present. I recently read in Atomic Habits by James Clear about the two minute rule. I had a great ah-ha moment and wanted to share. He begins with this— “We are limited by where our habits lead us. This is why mastering the decisive moments throughout your day is so important. Each day is made up of many moments, but it is really a few habitual choices that determine the path you take. These little choices stack up, each one setting the trajectory for how you spend the next chunk of time.” “Even when you know you should start small, it’s easy to start too big. When you start a new habit, it should take less than 2 minutes to do.” One of his examples of scaling down a habit to take less than 2 minutes is “do 30 minutes of yoga” becomes “take out my yoga mat.” I really related to that. It’s tough working out at home and for me, yoga is a home practice. I love that, although it is harder these days with two little boys 🫶 I decided to shift my mindset to “just stretch for 5-10 minutes” vs “let’s do yoga for 20-25 minutes.” With my old mindset, I was failing almost each time I would get on my mat because I wanted a 20 minute chunk of time but was lucky to get 10… especially uninterrupted 😂 All this to say, start small. Read just a page and before you know it, it’s 5. Starting somewhere is the key to getting started. And for me, I’ve been more consistent in my yoga practice after changing my mindset to a smaller and more achievable amount of time. Anything after that is a bonus 🤩😂 I definitely recommend the book. It’s probably nothing you haven’t heard before, but the way he packages his thoughts and ideas really clicked for me so had to share in case it can help you too 🙂🫶 Happy reading! 💖
