Our future leaders are on the right track! For their final project and exhibition before being promoted to middle school, the 5th grade class at High Tech High Elementary Explorer in Point Loma presented “There’s No Planet B”. The premise of the project was slow fashion, promoting recycling clothes, resisting fast fashion, and overproduction of wasted materials. Throughout the project, the students researched and learned about the wide impact of the life cycle of clothing and textiles, as well as what can be done as individuals and a community to reduce, reuse, and recycle, as well as repurpose clothing and textile items that have more life in them. For this project, the environment and community-minded youth created a mini thrift store called "Explorer Thrift” by collecting clothing donations from their families and friends. Then, the entire school, parents, families, and friends were invited to “shop” Explorer Thrift for FREE! Students were tasked with researching charities to donate the remaining clothes. "As soon as I read about Sharia's Closet and its mission statement, I pitched it to my whole class, and we all agreed that this amazing, local foundation was the perfect charity to donate all our remaining items! People in crisis need quality, personalized clothing to provide them with a sense of dignity, respect, and self-confidence as they move toward stability and overcoming extreme hardships. The need is great – requests to Sharia's Closet for emergency clothing and hygiene kits increased by 80% in the last year, with 50-60 requests per day on average. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to help cover the costs operating of our Bags of Hope program! This program provides a customized bag of quality clothing, with seven to ten outfits and basic hygiene products, to extremely vulnerable individuals and families throughout our community. We always feel so honored when people throughout our community find out about us and choose to give their time and resources to supporting Sharia's Closet! 🦋 Recently, a service group at Medtronic held a hygiene kit donation drive to benefit our organization. We were positively overwhelmed with the 8️⃣0️⃣ hygiene kits put together by Fernanda, Jaimee, Sara and their colleagues!🙏🏽 Along with that, they brought donations of nearly 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ toothbrushes, stocked up our travel size toothpastes, shaving kits, bar soaps, feminine hygiene products, and more! 🙌🏽 These ladies and their colleagues put so much time, care, effort and intention into creating hygiene kits specifically for women, men, infants and children. Inside each bag they also included a note of inspiration🌟, something that we try to always add so that the clients we are serving remember that there are people out there who care and want them to triumph over their hardships.
