A warm day the day of drinking and I popped into the fridge for an hour before pouring Quite muted on first opening but as the air and warmth got to this it came alive Dark cherry, squashed strawberries, forest floor, mushroom, Fine tannins, pitch perfect acid, leeeennnnnggggtttthh Complexity, length, fruit sweetness and savoury all at once. 2008 Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Blanco Rioja Reserva, a blend of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasía grapes sourced from the historic winery’s 100 hectares planted in 1913 on the right bank of the Ebro River in Spain. It is spectacular! Such consistency vintage after vintage. Beautifully balanced and structured and still evolving after 16 years. Delicious, full of complexity, extremely vibrant with tons of finesse and with an ever present velvety creamy liquorish mouthfeel. Deep glowing golden color with notes of damascus, dark honey, hazelnuts, lemon, melon and concentrated oak. This is old school wine making at its best. Fermentation takes place without skins in small oak vats using native yeasts from the vines for 7 days. The wine is then aged for 6 years in 225 litre Bordeaux oak barrels made at the winery itself. During the aging process the wine is also racked twice a year. An interesting note is that before bottleling the wine is fined using fresh egg whites, an ancient clarification and stabilization process that removes harsh tannins and is much gentler on the wine. Viña Tondonia Reserva Blanco is bottled without being filtered. Incredible wine that leaves you craving form more after every sip. This wonderful blend, produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Caladoc grapes with the consultancy of French oenologist Xavier Vignon, is one of the best 1-2 wines I have drank in Turkey. A masterful use of barrels, an aging performance that defies years, and a perfect balance. It contains a special grape such as Caladoc (a hybrid of Malbec and Grenache). Regardless of its ratio in the blend, it makes a difference, especially in Thrace. At 9 years old, it is still a wine with a strong backbone, ruby color, well-rounded tannins and layers. Dark fruits, tobacco, black pepper, licorice and currant become more evident after decanting. Body is medium+, acid is evident although not lively. Epis Chardonnay 2013 & 2018 and Epis Pinot Noir 2010 & 2012. In an Essendon themed afternoon whist watching the Bombers play on ANZAC date it happed that two of us had the same idea, pay homage to an Essendon stalwart. One chardy, one pinot…but it turned into a rather bigger afternoon than envisaged and common sense evaded us both 2013 Chardonnay first…this is deep gold, quite viscous. Melon, pear, white nectarine, buttered toast and cinnamon. Much lighter on its feet than the appearance or nose would suggest. A long, almost creamy finish with lovely balance, a beautiful wine at (or maybe slightly over depending on your preference it’s peak. This is bloody good! 2018 Chardonnay, more of the same, slightly less viscous and developed but a definite familial resemblance Onto the 2010 Pinot… Deep garnet in colour, this bottle was bright and clear though (sometimes I’ve found them to be cloudy). Dark cherry, squished strawberries, forest floor, cedar, this is superbly balanced. Superfine, not overly prominent tannins, as is typical this has wonderful mouthfeel and finish. * In the last few days, I’ve spent a good deal of time reflecting on the past. Don’t worry, my more recent past, not like back to my pre-puberty days; I’ve got my autobiography if you’re interested in going back that far. No, as you may have seen, I just recently eliminated my website HiitsDon4Wine.com after 9 years. In retrospect, I should have kept it one more year, then I could have had a slightly more honorable anniversary and sendoff. But why wait? I couldn’t tell you how many people visited my site versus my Instagram page, and Instagram is free! I don’t sell anything, except my books, and that came and went, although it’s still available on Amazon (one more sales push). Mostly, it all comes down to money, though it wasn’t that extravagant of a cost. It still feels like a sort of passing. Not of life, but of an era. The writing, structuring, and final presentation of oh so many posts. However, when I realized that I would be shutting down the website, I quickly found that there were alternate challenges using different formatting and presentation techniques I would have to master. Out with the old, in with the new. Change can be good! The one thing never to change, at least while I’m around and some doctor doesn’t tell me I have to quit drinking wine, is that I will continue to do what I love, drinking and writing about drinking, in that specific order. This, my friends and followers, is a fine wine that makes me glad. And even jump for joy especially matched with meat(when young) and game of course. Meet Carianne rouge”Les Travers” from Domaine Brusset in southern France. The grape varieties are Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault and they are growing on clayed limestone slopes with alluvial terraces that are rich in round stones. The age of the vines is 30 years and they are of course all handpicked. The vinification is traditional with stemming and each grape variety is vinified separately. Fermented in vats for 20 days and maturation during 10 months. After ageing 5-8 years the intense ruby-red color is astonishing. On the nose an elegant smell of black currant and elderberry. On the pallet a trendy start of full and concentrated flavours, black currant some pepper and spiciness. A long ending with silky tannins finish this wounderful experience. As you all well know, I am a lover of fine wines made of old vines. La Bastide Blanche Bandol is a favorite of mine. It got its appellation in the middle of the Second World War, to be exact 1941, and they are southbound to the Mediterranean with steep terraces. Today’s winemaker is Stephane Bourret and some of the vines he is working with today is over 45 years of age. This is important as the appellation regulates over 50% of Mourvèdre in their wines. This wine is 70% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 3% Cinsault and 2% Carignan and these grapes are used to the sun of Provence. 22 months in French oak gives this wine its body and strictness with a lot of elegance too. * Had a Hankerin' Hankering, urge, yearning, or better yet, thirst, was the way I would describe how I felt after pouring at a recent wine tasting. For many a year, I have been in love with a particular grape, so much so, that I once decried it as the “next big grape!” Alas, that was not to be, and my hopes were dashed as the grape never ascended to the heights I had hoped for. For years, it has languished between obscurity and animosity, finding it difficult to extol the virtues that are “SYRAH!” I hope to reverse those sentiments with today’s wine. After pouring an excellent Syrah from Beckman at the tasting, I could feel my taste buds come to life. That need to feel dark rich fruit and mellow tannins glide across my palate and open my senses to an almost indescribable flavor and feeling. Returning home that night I knew I needed to take action and immediately choose a wine for the following night’s dinner. Thankfully, I had several wines to choose from. As one of the oldest in my cellar, it wasn’t that difficult of a choice. The Collaboration Series, now discontinued, was designed to bring together the best of fruit, in this case from Ciel du Cheval vineyard, and various winemakers, Mark McNeilly for this wine, to produce a Northern Rhone-styled release made from 100% Syrah from their Red Mountain Estate vineyard in Washington State. Having the benefit of a dozen years to transform itself into this lavish wine, once poured I knew I had “chosen wisely.” The wine begins with full deep dark red fruit alongside rich dried black fruit and tannins that have mellowed to create a softness to an otherwise massive wine, finishing with a touch of spice that tingles towards a long finish. The wines of this winery are a “Force” to be reckoned with. Having had a number of their Estate wines, I can attest that even if Syrah isn’t your thing, it should be, they have other varietals as well, most of them garnering reviews in excess of 90 points, many much higher. So when a hankerin’ comes over you, remember Force Majeure, French for “Superior Force!” Cheers

So' che è sbagliato inserire in una degustazione il piano personale, dovremmo essere più oggettivi possibile, ma questo è un classico esempio "del vino che piace a me", un vino che abbiamo aspettato 39 anni e che così ha saputo donarci la sua massima espressione, dove l' ampiezza sia del naso che del palato ci ha portano a vivere un vero e proprio viaggio emozionale. Senza che io me ne accorga siamo al galoppo con andatura suadente! I nostri cuori non sono ancora in perfetta sintonia, il binomio che si formerà sarà perfetto! Ad oggi il cuore del “giovane cavallo” batte con maggior frequenza, 21 anni sembrano tanti ma in realtà è all’inizio del suo percorso di maturazione! By Farr Sangreal Pinot Noir 2013 F@k1ng cork, I fail to understand why you’d put so much hard work and love into a wine and then stick a piece of substandard tree bark in the neck of…broke in half and had to strain cork out of it, doesn’t appear to have obviously impacted the wine (at least on opening, but perhaps it had in hindsight) but a pain in the backside nonetheless. Murky tawny in colour Aromatically, it’s a very interesting wine, spice, red, fruit, dark, fruit, stalks, green pepper and stalks, cinnamon, smells sweet, and sour, forest floor…it’s fantastically complex but no doubt polarising to some Savoury palate dominated by the pepper and stalks with very little fruit to speak of, tannic, mouthwatering acid, sour. Somewhat short. Sometimes I feel for a nice sweet wine as for example as an aperitif or presented together with fois gras or smoked salmon. Or why not together with white meat in sauce or of course with different kind of desserts. So I picked a bottle of Chateau de Rousse 2017 from Jurancom in southwest of France to taste with late harvested grapes of Petit Masseng are picked in the passerilage method. With a slightly bitter (lemon pithy) taste as you swallow.
