I asked for a spiral herb and tea garden and wow, did he deliver! I read that the spiral provides lots of different environments for the plants (full sun, partial sun, shade, dry at the top, wetter at the bottom, etc) so it seemed like a fun thing to try. We filled it with rosemary, sage, oregano, lavender, dill, chamomile, lemon grass, lemons balm, parsley, and a couple others. Hoping it will fill in as the summer progresses. We’ll see how this year goes and tweak placement as needed. Everything is always a work in progress…. The next thing I want to do, is get some stepping stones for a path up the spiral so I can reach everything. Wandering around the mini spiral herb garden bed is such a pleasant aromatic experience! I'm so grateful that we built this last year. It was a nice experiment. While inspecting the structure and planning for this upcoming season, I realized it needed a dire cleanup and cutback. The sage, curry, thyme, and chives all played nicely with each other. However, my strawberries were trying to take over, with trailing vines growing under the leaves or spilling out and across the spiral bed. What does thriving soil look like? Abundant with life. Rich cholately, sweet smelling dirt. Earthworms are a great indicator of soil fertility. They assist in water movement, nutrient exchange, soil structure and plant health. Here I am unveiling a tomato engulfed spiral herb garden and replanting the Rosemary. This is a 18month old sheet mulched soil system within a spiral herb garden. The sheet mulching method provides a biodiverse solution as a no dig garden, many materials coming together to encourage a wide variety of bacteria and biology, this equates to a healthy soil food web. No soil is dead soil, it may just simply need some attention to unlock its potential.

The Herb Spiral is an example of Permaculture Design. It utilizes a core principle of permaculture design in that every element is placed in relationship to another so that they assist each other. As you will notice the center, highest point of the spiral is where the most sun will hit the plants and where the most wind will occur. Mediterranean plants thrive in these types of conditions. They prefer soil that drains and can tolerate full sun and windy conditions. As you go further down the spiral, the spiral will act as shade at different parts of the day for plants that don't like a ton of sun. The spiral also creates a slope in which heavy water from rain fall can travel down, and into a small frog pond at the bottom. The addition of the pond adds another principle of Permaculture Design. The principle of Polyculture and Diversity of beneficial species for a productive, interactive system. Use of edge and natural patterns (spiral found in nature) for best effect is yet a third principle utilized in this style garden. You can fit more plants in a spiral than you can in traditional rows in a rectangle. They are also often times easier to reach without having to create walkways between rows. Since Eugene is a Mediterranean climate, a lot of these herbs can survive all winter. Try this design for your next herb garden!

Bedeng tanam bermacam bentuknya. Salah dua yang kami sedang buat adalah spiral herb dan key hole bed. Bedeng tanam ini berada di depan saung dan terletak di kitchen garden zona 1. Spiral herb adalah bedeng tanam mengikuti pola alam spiral fibonacci yang ada di keong. Dengan bentuk ini diharapkan ada efisiensi dalam penggunaan air karena air siraman akan berputar mengaliri dari yang posisi paling tinggi ke yang rendah. Juga ada efektifitas ruang dimana tanaman yang membutuhkan banyak SM (full sun) bisa berdampingan dengan tanaman yang butuh sedikit SM (partial shade). Begitu juga dengan bedeng keyhole. Dimana akan ada efektifitas ruang penanaman. Area pemeliharaan akan lebih sedikit dibanding area penanaman. Sehingga didapatkan jumlah tanaman budidaya yang lebih banyak jika dibanding memakai bedeng tanam yang persegi biasa. When you think about permaculture, probably the first thing that comes to your mind is the spiral herb garden, but you can find opportunities like this one with less intervention. In the city, growing from cement cracks you can find amazing weeds. We can take advantage of similar spots in our zone 1, the most visited area outside our house - even a balcony! Look around and find those edges where different ecosystems meet or where different elements collide: like some soil and in between the cement cracks! Dustin planted the idea of a #spiralherbgarden in my head. I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into. 🙄 If you ever watch a YouTube instructional video and think “that looks easy”, tell yourself it’s not. This was my first (and last) mortaring project. And though it took about 4 times as long as I had hoped, I’m so happy with how it turned out. The final work on the People's Pollinator Garden should be completed by June 2. On that Thursday, the O will host a workshop to create the herb spiral. We're looking for a few (5 slots left) who want to get their hands dirty and their minds full as they learn why creating a perennial herb micro-climate is vital for pollinators that venture out on those occasional warm winter days. 👏🤙Huge Mahalos to GIVE and Heartlight Montessori School for helping us to rediscover a classic Hāmākua Harvest feature!🙏🤙💐 It was a lot of work to get this looking so good. First off, we had to dig out the larger, established guinea grass roots, rocks, and weedmat, then we layered the ground with cardboard, so no light-holes exist, loaded the zone with a heaping layer of mulch, and shaped with the original rocks - a brand-new spiral.🌼🌞🌨 Not only is the spiral herb garden a pleasure to look at, but it is also symbolic in that it marks the beginning of a new project that Hāmākua Harvest is excited to offer. Māla Kaiāulu is a community garden that invites folks to have a personal garden plot within The Demo Orchard where they can grow plants be it for their own home use or to sell for profit. We provide shared tools, mulch, water, and the space so people can get their hands dirty alongside others, sharing experiences, and growing as a community. 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛ü𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗯 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐛 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤? This Permaculture design maximises the natural force of gravity. It allows water to drain freely and seep down through all layers. This leaves a drier zone at the top (perfect for hardy herbs) and a moist area at the bottom for water lovers. The design also creates microclimates. This allows you to plant a diverse range of herbs in a variety of positions (sunny, sheltered and shady). In a typical garden bed or pot, all plants are grown on the one level. So the growing conditions are the same. The herb spiral design offers you multiple options in a compact space. The bricks form the backbone of the herb spiral structure, which is filled with organic hügelkultur matter and adds nutrients for the plant. The herb spiral garden is watered from the top. Moisture filters down to the bottom, creating different moisture zones. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨 𝐇ü𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐤𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤? Like all organic matter, wood will slowly decompose into the soil. Billions of bacteria, mycelium from fungi, and other creatures will slowly colonize any sort of wood and begin the process of turning it back into top soil. Hügelkultur beds, then, basically help the soil organisms along their path by giving them a concentrated amount of food material. By placing large amounts of logs, branches, and other woody materials, you are inviting a whole host of different organisms into a specific area. These beds are also a source of long-term fertility. Whereas mulches and leaf litter will be broken down into fertile topsoil in a couple of months, it will take years for the soil organisms to transform that wood pile into soil. You can plant crops into those beds and on top of the slowly decomposing wood piles. The logs and tree limbs in hügelkultur beds act as a slow release fertilizer that will offer fertility for your plants for several years. By covering the hügelkultur beds with top soil, finished compost, and mulch, you are creating a medium where you can immediately plant out almost any sort of crop. ⬇️CONTINUED IN COMMENTS⬇️

#flashbackfriday to my herb spiral last summer. Why grow herbs in a spiral garden like this (aside from, obviously, how cool it looks)? 🌿 By creating different levels of elevation as you build upward, you’re also creating tiny microclimates to suit different kinds of herbs or plants within a relatively small space. 🌿 The soil at the top of the spiral will drain more easily and therefore stay drier. It’ll also receive the most direct sun (depending on where you build it, of course). This is a great situation for growing herbs like rosemary and sage that like dry, warm soil and as much sun as they can get. 🌿 The soil moisture and temperature will naturally grow a little cooler and damper as you move to the bottom of the spiral - great for herbs like peppermint that like to keep their feet a little wet. 🌿 If you have plants that like a little shade, planting where the top of the spiral will cast an afternoon shadow is ideal. 🌿 Do have a herb spiral? The herb spiral in winter is looking a little straggly but still productive as ever 🌚🌿✨ Just coming up to a year old and housing approx 50 varieties of herbs, edible flowers and medicinal plants, the spiral structure creates microclimates which mean that a much greater diverse array of plants can live happily together in this small space, than they could in a larger open bed. What is permaculture, and how do you design a garden based on its principles? These are questions I’m often asked, from other allotment holders on here, but also from curious friends and gardeners off line too. Spiral Herb. Ketika melihat desain spiral herb, auto naksir. 😍 Selain desainnya yang menarik ternyata spiral herb menciptakan iklim mikro yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan tanaman di dalamnya. Dengan desain berbentuk spiral, maka air akan mengalir dari atas ke bawah sehingga tanah di bagian atas cenderung cepat kering. Sedangkan di bagian bawah, tanah menjadi lebih lembab. Ada jenis herb yang menyukai kondisi tanah yang kering dan berpasir dan ada juga yang lebih suka tanah yang dingin dan lembab. Penempatan setiap tanaman disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan si tanaman. It’s Relaxation Day today, and tying in very nicely with the end of #nationalallotmentweek! 😃 We all know that gardening (and being outside in general) is immensely beneficial in reducing anxiety and regulating our stress responses, but there are also loooads and loads of plants we can grow, gather and use to further de-stress ourselves for those times when life starts moving a bit faster than we’d like 😅 My brick spiral is packed with medicinal plants and healing herbs, and a lot of what I grow is focused towards feeding mental well being as well as the physical. Here are some of my favourite calming plants, what they can be helpful for (🌸) and how to use them (🌿) Echinacea 🌸 Stress + immune system 🌿 Teas + tinctures Mugwort 🌸 Anxiety, lucid dream + calming 🌿 Teas, oils and topically Clary and White Sages 🌸 Brain health + mood boosting 🌿 Teas + tinctures Chamomile and Lavender 🌸 Sleep + relaxation 🌿 Teas and in bath water Blue Skullcap 🌸 Stress, nervous tension + sedative 🌿 Teas + tinctures Lemon Balm 🌸 Stress + mood booster 🌿 Teas, bath water and tied in my hair! 💁🏻♀️👃🍋 Teas can be made with fresh or dried plants but you’ll generally need twice the amount of fresh to dry for the same effects. Permaculture design calls for designing and developing our spaces as ‘sensibly’ as possible. For those looking to get into permaculture, an herb spiral is an awesome first project to get in to! 🧱🌿🌀 For my garden, I chose the spiral to be a feature included for its space saving practicality, and its beauty. It is a real conversation starter to anyone who visits, and my herb spiral allows me to demonstrate and speak about permaculture principles with eye opening ease, sparking up interest from those unfamiliar to the idea. My spiral is made from bricks - because I had inherited so many on my plot - but you can use all sorts of materials to build your spiral, some of the ways I have seen are with.. 💚 Logs from trees, cut at different lengths and placed upright 💚 Rocks or stones. These can be built with the dry wall method or mortared for a posher spiral! 💚 Clay or mud dug from the garden (formed in to cob) Honestly, I wasn’t sold on the idea of using bricks - ideally I wanted beautiful large stones, however I had a huge pile of unsightly bricks on my plot that were perfect for the job, so waste not want not. But I must say, just 3 months on and the spiral is looking banging, I don’t think the bricks detract from its beauty and most importantly it is doing its job at the same time. A space saving, practical, element utilising and beautiful structure that gives a nod to nature with its Fibonacci design that not only creates a sense of harmony in our gardens, but also connects with our subconscious and draws us in 🌀 If you’d like to know how I built this or a photo step by step, then let me know and I can get one up for you. My herb spiral peeking out from behind the glistening lupins, just after an early summer rain filled the air with that damp, earthy scent of summer 💦😍 ‘Petrichor’ - the smell of rain on a warm, dry day is caused by a combination of a few different elements - including the secretion of oils by some plants, chemicals from soil dwelling bacteria, and the ozone. 🌫 Some plants and soil dwelling bacteria release chemicals when there is a water shortage in a bid to stop other seeds from sprouting. The chemicals secreted are carried by the wind, and mix with minerals as they hit rock, stone and tiny crevices - causing the smell of rain! 🌧 It’s one of my favourite scents, along with cut grass - but it’s a bit better because I don’t get itchy eyes 😅😳

This weekend we planted beans (256 seeds to hopefully thin to about 70 plants), zucchini, desi squash, pumpkin, Illinois squash, nasturtium, and sunflowers. We also bathed all 13 adult chickens and treated for mites, added paint and wheels to the brooder/ mini coop, and moved the goat and chicken yard to their early summer spot. All this in addition to endless weeding and watering, an enormous amount of mowing and weed whacking, cleaning, meal prep, and play dates and teacher appreciation week gift making. Last summer we cut down 5 spruce trees on our property that were hammered hard by a fungal pathogen in these parts. The death of a tree is always a sad thing to me, but within death is creativity and new life, so I decided to make good use of the life that once held sway here. This spiral garden design also functions as a hugelkulter bed, which will sustain life for a long time as it slowly breaks down. The spruce holding it all together, should stick around a lot longer however, which is what I want. I inoculated the wood below with spent and trichoderma contaminated masters mix bags and some soy hulls for fresh nitrogen to help speed decomposition along. Then I layered hardwood leaves on top, then native soil, then finished compost. What cool gardening projects are you working on this year? What resources do you have that could be used creatively?
