Here are some of my favourite flowers, colours and textures of spring 🌷🪻🌻🌹 I love flowers! They make me happy! And I love all the spring colours in the garden - first are the primroses, the crocus and the snowdrops, all the daffodils and all the tulips, the muscari, spanish hyacinths and alliums (first time growing these three and I love them all). Now that spring is fully here we have lilly of the valley, forget-me-nots, pansies, irises, the first dark red peony and I cannot wait for more of these! I have planted quite a few new peonies, also transplanted 2 older ones that weren’t doing well in the old spot. The new ones may not flower this year but I will try and be patient. I also planted 2 David Austin roses and one Living Cotton Cream Hydrangea- the name sounds so pretty 😍 I’m waiting on the anemones and the ranunculus, the sunflowers and the dahlias, and I have started seeds for a lot more varieties- some beneficial for the veggie garden, others just for providing beauty and attracting more bees and ladybugs. Is anyone else here a wannabe gardener?! 🙋🏼‍♀️👩🏼‍🌾🥬 I’m starting with this little raised bed as a practice round. One day, I’d love a larger more permanent raised bed. I am not an expert at all but I did do some research. I filled the bed with a mix of organic fruit and vegetable soil and organic compost. I planted some herbs, kale from seeds, one tiny strawberry plant (my girls were wishing I got more of these but I just wanted to test one out) and a cherry tomato plant(this will need a cage once it gets bigger). I read somewhere that throwing a marigold in there is good to keep the bugs away so I did that too 🤷🏼‍♀️. Me and Helen stood surveying the plants choices like two alien abductees trying to fathom reality on a whole new planet. Clueless as to what we would need, I resorted, in abject desperation, to asking the baby to channel ‘grandpapa’ (the new friend who visits her in her dreams, we’re convinced it’s grandad, but she says his real name is Sushi) and tell us what he would recommend. She danced around the aisles making her selections and then decided that her powers of mediumship would cost me yet another new toy. I think by this age you were much better at life than I am. Helen said that we would need compost (I thought you just put the plants straight in the soil) and not only did we need compost, we needed your specific brand of compost which was, of course, located on the opposite side of the shop. Guess which one of us had to haul the gigantic sack of mud the entire length of Belle Vue B&M? It was only when I reached the till that I realised the bag had burst and, like some sort of massive human slug, I’d left an earthy trail of destruction in my wake. How do you get compost stains out of a cream jumper? Something else you never taught me. Anyway, we are now in possession of some plants. Helen picked pansies and I picked Hellebore because it sounded witchy. We also got carrots, cucumbers, parsnips, tomatoes and cabbages for the vegetable patch we’re going to make. I know your reaction to this news would be ‘God help you.’ We begin planting tomorrow so I will keep you updated. I’d give anything for it to be you in the garden instead. We went to the Collin County Master Gardeners Association Garden Show in McKinney today. And check it out! We got to meet Tanner The Planter and his beautiful wife from Famous in Oregon! We bought a Staghorn Fern and Fusion White Calathea from them! A few weeks ago I submitted an application to have a Certified Pollinator Garden. I thought my application was denied so I was going to try again next year. Wellll I got an acceptance email this morning! I am super excited to know I am doing right here on the farm. This weekend Billy Barnett and I are working on our food forest which will not only feed us but will feed wildlife and give them shelter. I plan on documenting the different phases of the food forest in hopes that others might do the same.☺️ Job 12:7-10 But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? Embarking on a journey into vegetable gardening can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially when confronted with about a million of unfamiliar garden terms! I thought I’d help unravel the mystery behind common gardening lingo, ensuring that even the newest of beginners can navigate the world of gardening with confidence. Up first: annual vs perennial plants something I always got mixed up as a beginner! Annual plants are plants you plant each and every year. It is a plant that completes its entire life cycle, from germination to seed production, all within a single growing season. Examples of annual plants include many common vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans. Perennials on the other hand are plants that live for more than two years. They regrow each spring from the same root system. Unlike annuals, they do not complete their life cycle in a single growing season. Instead, they go through dormant periods during winter and resume growth in the following seasons. Perennials can produce flowers, fruits, or seeds over multiple years. Examples of perennial plants include asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, and many herbs like thyme and sage. This orchid I received for my birthday in August recently lost its blooms and was looking really sad, so I did a little research to learn how to determine its needs. I could have assumed things and tried all the wrong avenues like I have in the past, but now I am determined to see one bloom again instead of tossing it like the few I’ve tried to keep alive before. Last week vs today, I can already see an improvement. The leaves are less wilted and lifting up. They are supposed to be sturdy green and stand straight. From what I read it needed more water than the standard ice cube each week. I gave it a 15 minute soak instead, a better location in the house where it can feel cooler at night and a bit of orchid food. I am not sure it’s getting the best sun here, but I will see about a lamp or something if this isn’t the best. Let’s talk about these perfect peonies. I consider them a gift as they were planted by my home’s former owner. There are two plants, and I don’t know which varieties they are, but I just LOVE that they exist. Apparently they’re not easy to grow, so I consider myself lucky that the plants continue to get bigger each year and produce more and more flowers. I do nothing special to keep them going, other than put barriers around them to keep the dogs from trampling them. They’re basically pest-free (the peonies, not the dogs!) except for the 🐜 who sometimes hitchhike a ride into the house when I cut the blooms for a bouquet.
