March 21st, 2024 The blistering hot summer is on its way. Grade 8 harvested and ate some of our Black Sugarcane, a beautiful perennial for us. Grade 6 and grade 7 pruned our self seeded Sweet Basil thats growing in different sections all over our school, as a perennial! They're so resilient that some even grow out of paver gaps on our walkways. Additionally, because of the microclimate created in our school ecosystem, with more perennials, fewer annuals, and lots of biodiversity in a food forest format, our sweet basil pushes seasons and even grows in the hottest months. They also make a great general companion plant, detering some insects (we love our insects though and companions restrict one variety of insect to come in large numbers) with their beautiful smell! Last year I felt my way (I'm an empath) into creating many things within the natural world around me. I saw two fallen trees and filled them with natural organic compost initially as a propagation bed. The location in the woods is the perfect marriage of partial sunlight, wind/breeze, and still open to the sky for rain fall reception. There were several cucumbers that were grown in a truly natural sense: as a vine that grew on the ground and/or around any local debris like tree limbs etc. This year/season I am capitalizing on the wisdom of experience from last year and have sowed a full bed of #poinsett #cucumbers along with a few #armeniancucumbers. The #foodforest philosophy is a truly beautiful and powerful expression of conscious harmony and intimacy with the natural world. It's wild in its nature, just like we were before the overt "civilizing" and corporatizing took away the creative wonder in exchange for conformity to dominance hierarchies built by ego driven weak minded males. The revolution we need as a globe and collective species is a green one🌱🥬🌿🥦💚🌲🍏🐍. It's already in motion. It's the only way I suspect the powerful can be dethroned in a peaceful methodical manner. MINI FOREST GARDEN 🌿 I’ve listed some of the plants you can see in this 9x11ft bed. There are also poppies and alliums, climbing thornless blackberry, Japanese Wineberry, black currents and a Hazel at the back that you can’t see. The apple tree was planted in 2017 but the rest were established in 2021-22. I love gardening this way because now that the plants have spread and created a ground cover layer, there’s not much weeding to be done. It’s a no-dig bed, so the only work really involves harvesting and processing. I make jam and chutneys from the fruits and tea from the lemon balm. It’s always nice to visit this bed in the summer to select a handful of fresh berries to eat for breakfast. 🇨🇵 Jardiner c’est comme cuisiner Hier j’ai repiqué les tomates pour la dernière fois avant la pleine terre.Comme je vous l’ai dit je prends des pots plus grands dans lesquels je fais une mini lasagne. Tandis que je remplissais les pots j’avais l’impression que je cuisinais. D’abord aller chercher les ingrédients. ✓un peu de broyat pour mettre au fond du pot ✓de la vesce des haies coupée car c’est un fixateur d’azote et elle pousse naturellement ✓de la terre des taupinières Ensuite dans une grande auge à maçon je mélange le terreau additionné de sable et la terre des taupinières. Je superpose les couches carbone/azote/terre et enfin les plants de tomates. Du coup comme toute recette de cuisine ça prend un peu de temps !!!!! Après ça, la valse des pots peut commencer. Le soir je rentre les tomates et le matin je les ressort et ça tant que la température de la nuit est inférieure à 12°C. 🇺🇲 The cooking gardener Yesterday I transplanted the tomato plants for the last time before putting them in the ground. The Autumn beefsteak tomatoes are well on their way, and I am always pleasantly reminder why I grow heirloom tomatoes ~ they simply taste SO much better than anything bought at the store! So juicy and sweet, with full flavour and nutrient profiles ~ they are one of my favourite and most rewarding things to grow in the garden! Paired with an abundant basil bush (or 10) and some fresh sourdough from the oven, they really are the dream team 👌🏻🤤 After some decent rains, I always encourage pruning of any excess, diseased or damaged foliage to aerate the plants in order to prevent further disease. I keep track of how much water the garden receives with my @hoselinkaustralia rain gauge. By keeping track, I can prevent overwatering which tomatoes definitely don’t love! Here’s to many many more tomato harvests to come 👌🏻

Diverse layers of vegetation, including fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, and ground covers, intermingle harmoniously, creating a resilient and productive landscape. The strategic arrangement of plant species follows the principles of syntropic agroforestry, with taller trees providing canopy cover and wind protection, while smaller plants fill niches, enhance soil fertility, and attract beneficial insects. The food forest serves not only as a source of nourishment but also as a sanctuary for wildlife, fostering biodiversity and ecological resilience. It has become a place of beauty, serenity, and inspiration, where humans and nature coexist in harmony. The Apr ‘24 edition of @rooting.for.nature, my nature column for @deccanherald, published last Sunday. The column features one of a clutch of what I call ‘kookie callers’ of #NaviluKaadu — birds with bizarre calls. This is the first in a multi-part series on the winged ones with weird calls, that startle us and spook us by turns, on the farm. For the April edition, I wrote about the enigmatic Indian nightjar, a crepuscular bird, that likes to keep time, and starts calling at around 7 pm each day. This edition is extra special. Among the usual reader e-mails, was one from 11-year-old Nishad, responding to my reader prompt to guess the bird that would feature in the upcoming May column. Nishad even included the scientific name of the bird he guessed! ❤️ I have no words. This just makes the beautiful, yet arduous pursuit of stewarding and preserving wild, untamable Navilu Kaadu, worth our while, as a family. Staphylea colchica, a new one for me. I noticed it flowering for the first time in a clients garden and had to use a plant id app. It’s rare I see a plant I can’t identify so it’s always exciting. Apparently its common name is ivory flowered bladdernut and has edible flower buds. I’ve now got both doors on my new #polytunnel. I made a conventional hinged door for the front, using aluminium channel and “wiggle wire” to enable the greenhouse plastic to be shifted up and down on the door. This allows me to control the temperature and ventilation, and it will be interesting to see how it fares. . The back door is a simple weighted flap arrangement, as was supplied in the polytunnel kit. I will rarely be using this back door, so simple is fine. . What I’m hoping to achieve is a consistently warm environment through winter, to give my citrus seedlings the best opportunity to grow rapidly. #foodforest

10 years ago! I spent the May Day 2014 learning forest gardening from one of the most experienced teachers and practitioners in the field, Martin Crawford (on the right) @agroforestryresearchtrust. Martin's 2-day Forest Gardening course was life changing, as I decided to start teaching the subject myself here in Finland. The famous forest garden Martin has created over the years in Dartington, Devon, UK has hundreds of useful plants that work together as an ecosystem. The 0,85ha forest garden of perennial plants captures a lot of carbon converting it to biodiversity and abundance. I'd read Martin's book 'Creating a Forest Garden – Working with Nature to Grow Edible Crops' already in 2010 when it first came out. The book actually made me start my own forest garden in the same year here in Laitila 60° 58'N. It's chestnut time! 🌰🐿️ We have been gifted two beautiful small chestnut saplings by @fuglekurt_pigeons As impatient as we are, we couldn't wait to plant them on the hill behind the barn. Chestnuts can be both edible (for humans) and non-edible, and I believe this is a non-edible white chestnut. One of the reasons why we are so excited to plant this, is because a grown chestnut tree is absolutely beautiful to see, but it also provides forage, food and shelter for all the animals that visit our farm. Since there is no chestnut tree on our farm yet, it's also a great addition in terms of biodiversity! Let's hope they survive! One of my favourite tools to manage our foragers garden and interact with the emerging ecosystem. I don't know exactly what it is called, we call it the Japanese sickle. It has the perfect shape to free overgrown plants or selectively mow small areas. The best thing about building soil quality and water retention in the garden is that despite some time away from tending to the garden, it continues on abundantly without me! There is a constant trickle in of various chilli varieties at the moment, my favourite being these delightful Habanero Mustard. This is a new variety for me but so wonderfully productive! These are hot and spicy so are destined for a hot sauce! Did you know you can accumulate ripe chillis in the freezer until you are ready to process them?! That way you can produce a larger batch size and not have to wait for all the chillis to ripen at once! I store mine in a container in the chest freezer and process when I have enough for a large batch! Handy Snippers in Sage by @hoselinkaustralia
