Są płyty żywe, wnoszące coś nowego do muzyki; są spokojne i powtarzające wiele, ale zarazem inne. Są albumy które robią to i to. Taki właśnie jest nowy album Marka Knopflera - One Deep River. On po prostu płynie - jak tytułowa rzeka. Robi to powoli, spokojnie, w swoim własnym i niepowtarzalnym tempie. Nie próbuje zmienić nurtu, który od 50 już prawie lat (z Dire Straits czy bez) jest w zasadzie taki sam. Czasem bardziej rwący, czasem spokojny. Wszystko zależy od tego jak poprowadzi go dźwięk gitary. A on potrafi. Myśle, że to najlepszy, najbardziej równy solowy album Marka (gdyż to, że nikt nie opowiada historii gitarą jak on niezależnie od albumu - to rzecz pewna). Warto posłuchać, obojętnie z jakiego źródła - byle w całości, powoli delektować się nim. Tak jak na winylu - bez przełączania ścieżek, nuta po nucie dać się porwać tej głębokiej rzece. Read this 33 1/3 series book on Spiderland by Slint. If you are familiar with this record, well hell, that’s what your Spotify is for. This book answered a lot of questions I had about the album and the band in general. Slint is easily considered one of the first post rock or even math rock bands. I discovered them by buying this weird 10’ record in the 90’s. Yes a 10’ record. I was a bit obsessed with them at one point. I even have the Pixies 10’ box set Death to the Pixies. They are a really nice stable platform for the music and rarely ever warp. Of course they have less time per side which means flipping them more but hey, vinyl! This book really helped me understand the Kentucky/Chicago/New York thing that was going on. I was really surprised by Glenn Danzig’s connections to the band. If you are looking to fill in your Reading Challenge book related to music, this is a great series to get involved with. Today in music: Faster by George Harrison from the 1979 album George Harrison. Released 45 years ago yesterday, it was the former Beatle’s eighth studio album. It was recorded in the UK between April and October 1978 and saw Harrison reflecting on the happiness in his life at the time. During 1977-78 he had married his girlfriend Oliva, become a father to son Dhani and spent much of the year away from music, primarily becoming a fixture on the Formula 1 circuit. Faster, the third single, was inspired by his close friendships with world champions Niki Lauda and Jackie Stewart. It also saw Harrison work with close friends Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood who both performed on the album. A huge commercial and critical success, this is one of the seminal albums of the 1970s. Original 1976 copy It was Harrison's 1st album released on his Dark Horse record label, the worldwide distribution for which changed from A&M Records to Warner Bros. as a result of his late delivery of the album's master tapes. Among other misfortunes affecting its creation, Harrison suffered hepatitis midway through recording, and the copyright infringement suit regarding his 1970-71 hit song "My Sweet Lord" was decided in favour of the plaintiff, Bright Tunes Music. The album contains the US top 30 singles "This Song" - Harrison's satire on that lawsuit and the notion of plagiarism in pop music - and "Crackerbox Palace". Despite the problems associated with the album, many music critics recognized this album as a return to form for Harrison after his poorly received work during 1974-75, and considered it his strongest collection of songs since 1970's acclaimed All Things Must Pass. Harrison recorded this album at his Friar Park home studio, with production assistance from Tom Scott. I remember George Harrison's Thirty Three & 1⁄3 album well because my dad, who was Forty Three & 1⁄3 years old at the time, drove me to Odyssey Records on Christmas Day, 1976, to pick up a copy for my 15th birthday. We had to return the album twice before we found a copy that didn't skip. The album is a favorite of mine, not just for the music that's on it but for that memory it brings to mind which I haven't forgotten about after all these years. On this day forty-seven years ago, November 19, 1976, George Harrison's Thirty Three & 1⁄3 album was released. Wikipedia: Thirty Three & 1⁄3 was Harrison's first album release on his Dark Horse record label, the worldwide distribution for which changed from A&M Records to Warner Bros. Today in music: Dream Scene by George Harrison from the 1968 album Wonderwall Music: Released 55 years ago this month, it was the Beatle’s debut solo album. Recorded in London and Mumbai between November 1967 and February 1968, it was the first solo record put out by a member of The Beatles and the first album to be issued by Apple Records. It featured guest appearances from a range of musicians including Eric Clapton, Ring Starr, Aashish Khan, Shivkumar Sharma, Shankar Ghosh and Mahapurush Misra. It charted but was not a major success, reaching No.49 in the US. However it was critically well regarded and it was a favourite of Harrison’s.
