Lighthouses and other physical Aids To Navigation are expensive to maintain and increasingly are being rationalised as even the smallest vessels become reliant on satellite navigation. Ian and Sailing Trilleen are sheltering in Campbeltown from a blow that's been putting 50kt gusts over the peninsula... Goodness only knows what the seas will be like off the Mull of Kintyre at the moment, but I think the fact that the fast ferry to Ballycastle in Northern Ireland isn't running speaks for itself. Today was occupied with grocery hunting and a few other small jobs and keeping rested for what will hopefully be a successful escape from the North Channel in the next few days. Saturday we island hopped across to the Isle of Mull slightly hungover and not great to travel on a bumpy ferry in horrendous weather. I wanted to explore another corner of Mull and decided to do the Lochbuie Explorer, starting off with tea and cake in the Old Post Office Tearoom to wait out the elements, no such luck deciding to do this route in reverse to get the bog fest out the way, we reached the standing stones and the rain become biblical and the ground more swampy 🤣 we took shelter in the rhododendron bushes until the downpour stopped, onwards we went taking in the stunning views, the old schoolhouse, Laggan beach where some people were out in a Blokart, a medieval chapel now restored to a mausoleum for the MacLaines. The rain and wind continued to batter us as we headed to Moy Castle on the return, the castle is still being restored and was replaced by Lochbuie House as the home of the Clan MacLaine. Finally back at the car we had a little time to spare and headed to Fishnish to bag the Rubha Leth Thorcaill Trigpoint, a Vanessa Trig, this had cracking views across the bay to Lochaline and Scallastle Bay. Ailsa Craig was looking particularly mysterious on my passage out of Lamlash towards the mouth of the Clyde Estuary and points north. Trilleen and I were hard on the wind in an increasingly lumpy sea - more moderate than slight... and it was coming on to rain... and critically the wind couldn't decide if it wanted to blow 25 or 10kts making for sail change after sail change. During the winter while Trilleen and I have been wintering at Inverkip I've been very happily worshiping at St John's Gourock, a Church of Scotland church. Its been a thrill to have walked in, without much searching, to a church which is alive, fascinating, and theologically challenging while holding to some of the beautiful eccentricities of the Presbyterian Faith. One of the important things that local boat owners, and visitors can do is to participate in the communities their boats call home, or they visit. Please do drop into places of worship - if that's your thing, or patronise the local cafes and pubs. This is what helps to keep communities alive. Lamlash is a bit of a not spot in terms of mobile coverage which means that I've been performing that classic cruiser art form - searching for wifi. I can commend the Pier Head Tavern as a nice place to eat or drink coffee -definitely a spot to restore wellness - and terribly tolerant of me staring at weather forecasts in predict wind. The old football field, situated above the Seminary complex was used by the priests and students for friendly games. When the Kilmahew Estate was transferred to us, the Catholic Diocese were kind enough to gift this plot of land. We have always intended to create a UNESCO World Heritage Site at Kilmahew to celebrate the astounding architecture, environment and culture that has been part of this Estate from pict times. The old football field is crucial to this endeavour. We intend to create a new visitors centre at the corner of the field to take advantage of the old Victorian walkway down to the Seminary. The concept is to create a low lying building that overhangs the field allowing visitors to view the Clyde from the centre. This visitors centre will encompass a cafe, ticket office and shop on the main floor and an exhibition space for Gillespie Kidd and Coia on a mezzanine level. Initially we will create a temporary space before the final building emerges. The remaining field will house a temporary studio space for filming and parking for visitors. The Convent was originally two floors, the ground floor, mainly offices, were comprised of the angel winged structures directly in front of the circular turrets with a central corridor running along the length of the building allowing access to the staircases at the rear of the building. The upper floor was slightly multi levelled and housed the sleeping quarters for the nuns. This building served as the support for the Seminary and we intend to continue that use within our plans. We see the ground floor as various meeting spaces, reception and boardrooms to support the various financial and business services we intend to provide as part of our plans for encouraging enterprise on the Estate. This will be explained in a later post! The second floor is now incredibly skeletal, having lost all the walls to the bedrooms. The Education building was a three floor structure primarily designed as a lecture theatre, common room and a basement library. We intended to have a ground floor library with the wonderful views you can see in the small video and we are looking at ways of creating a space within the canopy. The basement will be more of a research and study space within the two floor library. Originally the upper floor was a lecture theatre with a low sitting roof. We would like this space to be more functional for the 21st century. The lecture theatre will remain but we are investigating whether there is scope for a mezzanine space in the roof line over looking the canopy. We do not intend to disturb the roof line from the courtyard, rather just add a line of windows overlooking the burns under a slanted roof to one side.
