2019 saw the latest release by Ohioan band The National on I Am Easy To Find a different creative path was made. Working with Mike Mills, inspiration began to run between The National and Mike Mills. Mills created a short film of the same name as The National's album. Music from the album was used in the film, but the music was recorded after the film had been shot. Got all that? So how is this album different? Seven different female vocalists contributed to the majority of the album's 16 tracks. This creates a different level of emotion and atmosphere for the album not experienced before. The result is alluring, balanced, and soothing. This was a rather gutsy move for a band with such a strong following. The album once again proved a success for the band reaching the Top 10 in over 13 different countries. Stand out tracks for us are So Far So Fast, Rylan (a single and fantastic story of a girl dealing with the pressures of life and love), the opening track and lead single, You Had Your Soul With You (we love the gangling guitar and mad string arrangement that plays with the juxtaposition of the smooth and serene vocals). Quiet Light is one of those songs you can just close your eyes and imagine a film in your mind's eye. I Am Easy to Find - The National (2019) [Indie Rock / Chamber Pop / Art Rock] While personally, I find Sleep Well Beast to be The National's strongest together thus far, I Am Easy to Find is an enjoyable, if often flabby release. Like Father of the Bride, if there were less tracks on the album, it would be a lot more solid as an album. Don’t be afraid to leave behind the things you’ve found along the way. — Nature teaches us to have faith in the world we belong to. When I come into knowing the patterns of death, decay, and regrowth I free myself to understand change as an inevitable and permanent process. — In this early spring I cut away the long grey architecture of last year’s catmint flowers and find this sweet creature (Cornu aspersa) hidden amidst the bright colours of what comes next. — We don’t need to take it all with us. Most of it isn’t meant to be kept. What’s finished becomes the structure on which we build what’s next. I pile the catmint straw under skeletal maple leaves and newly pulled weeds to fill in holes in the landscape. — The keeping is related to fear and the story of scarcity we’ve been fed by fearful living. It isn’t important. What the plant has lost will feed the soil of its neighbors. — So much of what grows is meant to be food and fodder for other things. Imagine your joy as a food for the spirit of the world you belong to. Imagine your bright living as the fodder for sweet creatures to sing a moment before taking your stories to another corner of the garden. — When we tend diligently to the needs of ourselves in communion with the needs of the things around us then everything grows slowly together. What is meant for us comes again and again. The National - You Had Your Soul With You / Hairpin Turns Even though I already have the album these singles are off of, I had to cave in and get this once I saw it on the Cherry Tree website because I’m a sucker for The National. You Had Your Soul With You was the lead single to The National’s album I Am Easy to Find and Hairpin Turns followed behind it. Out of the two songs, Hairpin Turns is my favorite with how it really shows the feelings and confusion throughout a rocky part in a relationship and finding yourself throughout it. With this pandemic, I’ve been taking time to learn about past outbreaks in history, including the Spanish Flu. Two of my favorite artists — Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele — fell victim to it in 1918. It’s surreal and nightmarish that our world today is facing yet another plague, and I can only pray that it ceases sooner than later. As part of the high risk group, I haven’t slept well in weeks. The National - I Am Easy To Find (5/17/19) • Finally getting around to sharing my thoughts on one of the biggest releases in alternative music of 2019. • They put down 16 new songs for this and it’s over an hour in listening time which is always daunting to me, especially when it comes to a band like The National; a band many would call boring. • And ya, these guys are pretty slow...pretty tame, but dammit do they know how to make some beautiful music. • Matt Berninger is a God behind the mic and commands the attention with his style. He doesn’t steal the spotlight on this though, incorporating female vocals on many of the tracks. • The drums are always a pleasure with this band. Bryan Devendorf brings an energy to some of these slow songs that makes them much more captivating. • All that said, I’m not crazy about this stuff. I got into these guys with 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me and songs like “I Should Live In Salt,” “Sea of Love,” and “Graceless” are leagues above this in my opinion. • It’s looking like none of these will even grace my top 100 of the year which is disappointing.
