Il film mostra la vita ordinaria di un uomo qualsiasi, appartenente alla classe umile giapponese, intento a lavorare come addetto alle pulizie nei bagni pubblici. La narrazione e la struttura del film sono un misto tra documentario e cinema d’altri tempi, con l’uso del 4:3 a simboleggiare l’angusta vita del protagonista. Egli si muove nella vita di tutti i giorni in silenzio, caratteristica principale del film che potremmo definire quasi muto, con pochissime scene parlate e la sola musica a fare da accompagnamento. Si tratta, quindi, di un film contemplativo più che narrativo, mancando di fatto una vera storia da raccontare. Anche le brevissime scene oniriche, in b/n, sono da considerare un rimando al cinema surrealista in quanto non rappresentano eventi o situazioni. E’ proprio questo aspetto artistico/nostalgico la caratteristica dominante del film, la cui lentezza può risultare tediosa e snervante per chi non è abituato a questa tipologia di prodotti. Essendo una sorta di “one man show”, il protagonista è il solo soggetto che domina la scena, con la nipote unica a dare segni di vita e umanità ad una storia che sembra più una seduta di meditazione. Perfect Days (2023) Not much is going on in Hirayama's very routine life in Tokyo cleaning fancy public toilets. But he does seem to make the most of what he has, and he has books and his cassette tapes, and in some ways quite a rich (inner) life. There is a lot to say, discuss and think about this movie and it’s all in the details, I wish I had some more caffeine in my body when watching it, because I think I missed some of those details. Depicting the quiet everyday routines of a Tokyo toilet cleaner, this is arthouse domestic drama at its most low-key and quietly enveloping. Perhaps a little bit too low-key considering how much this has been hyped as Wenders’ triumphant return, but there’s still a lot to like about its portrayal of routine urban ennui, and the quiet encroachments of personal life, not least with such a terrific lead performance by Koji Yakusho. Me sorprendió el acto de valentía de Wenders al mostrar al gran público un cine más propio de autores independientes. La película transcurre casi sin incidentes y es demasiado sutil en sus significados, pero es genuinamente sincera, conmovedora e intransigente para el gusto del espectador. 'Perfect days' (2023) A beautiful, beautiful movie about enjoying the simpler things in life. Hirayama lives in Tokyo and he spends his days as a public bathroom cleaner who takes pride in taking good care of the bathrooms and cleaning them perfectly. He lives his life with a very simple routine of waking up in the morning, watering his plants, trimming his moustache, buying coffee from a vending machine and then heading off to work. On his way to work he usually listens to his cassette tapes that feature Lou Reed, Otis Redding and other artists while he enjoys the beautiful sunrise. You might wonder why a movie about a man who cleans toilets is called 'Perfect days' but when you take a glimpse into Hirayama's life you rapidly see how much he enjoys his life and his work and how content he is with it. I've grown to love these kinds of movies where the subject is finding joy in everyday life just like our protagonist does. Every day he takes his lunch in a park where he takes pictures of his favorite tree, who his niece later calls 'his friend'. The ending scene was perfect and Kôji Yakusho's performance in this movie was truly wonderful. There aren't many actors that can evoke so many emotions with so few words. Some films you keep hearing sky-high praise from people so much so that in case you're yet to watch that film, you might wonder how can a film be so good and do they all really mean every bit of their praise. The same scenario happened in my case all these days while I was waiting for that one perfect day to watch PERFECT DAYS (2023) and it was finally last Monday when I boarded the flight on an office-travel to Malaysia - before boarding, I went to the toilet and noticed people rushing past the "wet floor" / "cleaning in progress" sign in making me think all the while about the daily lives of toilet cleaners and hence, switched on 'Perfect Days' immediately during the flight journey. What followed for the next 2 hours was one such film where I was constantly in this mode of "a film can't be this good, a film can't be this relatable, nooooooooo" and then came that ending that made me feel so many contradictiory emotions all at once like the greatest of films do in not ending but starting a whole new chain of thought for you to take back home. And while I was trying to make total sense of wtf I just experienced during those 3 mins, I already lost myself in Nina Simone's "Feeling Good" song playing over the end-credits and not often do one feel like sitting through the end-credits completely but sitting so helped me so much because it introduced me to this new Japanese word "KOMOREBI" [after learning about "Argadini" in Theo Angelopoulos' ETERNITY AND A DAY (1998), this is the most excited I felt upon learning a new word in film] that is the only word which can sum up not only the ending of this film, but also the several emotions felt or not felt by Hirayama throughout the film or for that matter, it's the one word that could sum up all of our existence in general besides summing up filmmaking too in terms of the sunlight (light) passing through the leaves (lens) and making patterns (film) of light plus shadow! Everyone has their own "literally me" characters in the current pop culture and neither I had one such nor I tried to have one during recent years because I developed a certain detachment with... Perfect Days (2023, dir. Wim Wenders) Hirayama parece completamente satisfecho con su sencilla vida como limpiador de baños en Tokio. Fuera de su rutina diaria muy estructurada, disfruta de su pasión por la música y los libros. Y le encantan los árboles y les toma fotos. Una serie de encuentros inesperados revelan poco a poco más de su pasado. Una película extrañamente buena, y es que me parece inusual que una película tan ordinaria resulte tan interesante. Y es que eso es en lo que se enfoca este filme, en retratar la belleza en lo ordinario y en lo simple, y que mejor manera de hacerlo que con una rutina diaria. Nos invita a apreciar la vida en todos sus aspectos, incluida su monotonía, nos incita a aceptar nuestra vida tal como se nos entrega, con lo bueno, lo malo y lo aburrido, con sus placeres simples. Perfect days (Giorni Perfetti) di Wim Wenders con Kôji Yakusho, Tokio Emoto, Arisa Nakano, Aoi Yamada, Yumi Asô (produzione: Giappone, Germania) Nonostante il regista sia tedesco, il Giappone ha deciso di farsi rappresentare agli Oscar da questo film perché è totalmente intriso della concezione di vita giapponese. Più giapponese di un giapponese. #nospoiler è difficile scrivere di questo film perché non ha trama, non ci sono avventure fuori dall’ordinario o effetti spettacolari, e nemmeno parte in sordina per raggiungere un acme (non c’è l’effetto wow o come direbbero superficialmente i funzionari di Netflix “è uno slow burner che non esplode” citazione dal Sol dell’Avvenire di Moretti 🤪). Tre impressioni affiorano da questo film, rarefatto e cristallino: la prima è un elogio alla quotidianità, al trovare la gioia nelle piccole cose che accadono ogni giorno, anche se quello che succede è (sembra?) sempre uguale: il protagonista è Hirayama, un operatore ecologico di Tokio, di circa 60/65 anni, incaricato di pulire ogni giorno le toilette pubbliche (quelle che si trovano nei giardinetti, nei parchi giochi dei bimbi, accanto ai palazzi pubblici ecc). Il regista lo segue da quando apre gli occhi nella sua sobria cameretta, all’alba, fino a quando si toglie gli occhiali da lettura, ripone il libro aperto a faccia in giù e spegne la lampada pochi istanti prima di addormentarsi; addirittura cerca di illustrarci i sogni che fa. Hirayama sembra non avere passato e vive serenamente questo eterno presente di routine sempre identiche sia a casa che al lavoro e nonostante la sua vita sia semplice, al limite della povertà e faccia un lavoro umilissimo, è felice perché è aperto a tutto quello che lo circonda e lo assorbe ricavandone gioia, come una foglia che si beve avidamente ora i raggi del sole, ora la pioggia diventando sempre più verde e lucida.
