“It needn’t have been technology billionaires. There were plenty of other forces of merciless capital and power in the world.” This reminds me quite a bit of the Daniel Quinn Ishmael books. Not only does it integrate storytelling into the narrative, but it looks not just at what our society is doing, but how the structure of our society shapes those actions. The author paints a bleak picture of the destruction we’re hurtling towards - environmental devastation, increasing wealth gap, structural inequality, lack of data privacy, fracturing social connections. One of the sections I thought was the most interesting was her discussion of how we’re impacted by our environment. Instead of existing in a natural environment, which requires us to be alert, adapt, and survive, we have constructed a human-made, human-centric world. This world is made for us - it literally revolves around us. And that has shaped how we see ourselves and how we relate to the world and to each other, dulling some senses and limiting our mental capacities. In terms of the plot, there are some wild twists, so I don’t want to say too much. Thank you to @gallerybooks for the eARC! Happy Pub Day to my favorite Ruth Ware novel: One Perfect Couple! This was my most anticipated book of the summer and it did not disappoint! This book was excellent. The reality show devolving into a Lord of The Flies situation was so well done! This had me anxious, nervous, and at times on the edge of my seat. I was genuinely surprised by the twist and appreciated how grounded the book was, in spite of the reality show gone wrong, deserted island setting. I loved the main character, she was compelling and relatable, I was heavily invested in her survival and emotional journey. I think this is the perfect summer thriller, an immaculate beach read that will have you unable to put it down. I can’t wait for my stunning UK edition with sprayer edges to come in! SUNSET || The sun has set on our time in Chagos. As I type we are currently blowing across the Indian Ocean, deep into our first of seven days at sea, to get to the Seychelles. A new country and a new continent. The first few photos here are from a catamaran wreck in Chagos. I don’t know what happened to the boat but it was very eerie walking these ruins in the fading light. This was one of many reality tv based books that I seem to have read this year. Not a surprise since I am a big fan of reality tv. This one was my favorite, though! The tv aspect actually ended up being just the catalyst for the story to begin. It’s truly a tale about survival and using your wits to outlast other nefarious characters. I zoomed through it and often found myself thinking about what might be happening to the characters when I wasn’t able to be reading. I recommend checking this book out when it releases on Tuesday! MOODY WEATHER || We are waiting out the turning season in Chagos… waiting for ideal weather to continue on to the Seychelles. As a result the weather here has been predictably unpredictable. It’s rained nearly every day (right now I’m huddled indoors hiding from the rain) and squalls can move over in a matter of minutes. What’s more the direction of each squall is entirely different so my weather reading skills have been put to good use recently… is that system headed our way or not?! BIOT issues month long permits to cruisers who can use these islands to shelter and wait for weather windows to cross the vast Indian Ocean. Due to yet more weather in the Maldives and our jellyfish incident in Thailand we actually arrived 2 weeks later than planned here and have had only two weeks to enjoy this paradise. Already we are watching the weather now trying to determine the right moment to take off into the blue. Our neighbours, in the second photo, left at the very last minute of their permit and had to head out in to a possible tropical storm (thankfully it cleared up) so we are anxiously watching the days tick away, hoping this does not happen to us. The weather has not settled yet but I’m crossing my fingers for a break in the clouds soon. Meanwhile, all these squalls have made for lots of moody skies and beautiful sunsets here in Chagos. We are learning to truly live in the moment - each time the sun breaks through we drop our boat chores and head outside. Make sure to save this post if you’re planning to visit Maldivian local islands. Remember this name! Bodumohora 🌴🥥🏖️ Another one of my favourite deserted (also called private or picnic) islands in Maldives. This one is located in Vaavu atoll. About 2 hours South of Male by speedboat. The best (closest) local island from which you can make the trip to Bodumohora is Rakeedhoo, but you should be more or less able to organize a trip from pretty much all the other local islands Keyodhoo, Felidhoo, Thinadhoo and maybe also from Fulidhoo even though that one is a bit further away, so it would be more expensive for sure. I highly highly recommend coming as much time as possible, as I will guarantee you that you will not want to leave. It’s a real paradise within Maldivian paradise. There is a fee you need to pay for the entry (if I’m not mistaken it’s 20 USD per person) but the excursions usually have this fee included in the price of the excursion. I highly recommend arranging a picnic on the island. We used the amazing services of @tranquilnestvaavu for this excursion during our group trip and they are the best! Please make sure to explore the island a bit, walk around it. The part where the boat will drop you off, tends to be quite busy with other tourists coming to have their picnics or just visiting, but if you walk a bit towards the other side, you’ll find heaven! SALTY LIFE || The flip side of Chagos… Those who read my last post will know that we are in Chagos - a remote deserted island chain deep in the heart of the Indian Ocean. It’s a wildlife preserve and teeming with life both above and below the water. The terms of our permit mean we are not allowed to dive here (seeing as we are thousands of miles from a decompression chamber I guess it’s for our safety) but we are allowed to snorkel… and that has been fabulous. We’ve been in and out of the water every day so far. There is so much to see and explore. We’ve seen turtles, rays, sharks and hundreds of fishies. We’ve also seen 4 wrecks… for some reason the island is full of them. It makes for fun free diving but I do wonder why there are quite so many here 🤔 The biggest decision of each day? Where to jump in. We did a drift snorkel with the dingy yesterday, for example, where we just floated with the roaring current dragging the dingy behind us. It was wild. Sadly the long arm of climate change has reached here too. The coral is bleached in many places and dying in others. But it’s still teeming with life here and I feel very privileged to witness nature thriving without human interference. I feel more at one with the ocean than I ever have. It feels so natural these days to jump in and out of the water. I used to fear it slightly but as this lifestyle continues I’ve found those old worries seeping away. CHAGOS || We are stranded on a deserted island… literally. Have you ever heard of Chagos? It’s an island chain covering an area that’s larger than California in the middle of the Indian Ocean… and it’s almost entirely uninhabited. The story of Chagos is quite a sad one actually. There used to be people here but they were forcibly relocated by the British to allow the Americans to set up an army base. I’ll tell more of that story in another post, as it is important to pay it justice… For today’s introduction though it is enough to know that the islands of Chagos are now empty, with the exception of one US army base, and no one is allowed to visit these shores. It’s a nature preserve with zero tourists allowed. As cruisers we applied for a special transit permit to allow us to stop here as we move across the Indian Ocean. To our knowledge, we are one of 12 boats approved this year. We were granted one month with fixed dates and arrived late (for various reasons) so have about 2 weeks to enjoy this remote paradise. I cannot tell you how special it is to spend each day walking beaches that none else gets to walk. To explore forest that no one else has seen. We are utterly alone. It’s also been a real privilege to see nature uninhibited. The amount of birds here are breathtaking and the sheer numbers of fish we have seen is inspiring. Everything seems richer; the colours are deeper, the water clearer and the stars brighter. I cannot wait to show you more of this beautiful remote paradise as the days unfold.
