THE ELEPHANT MAN was the one David Lynch movie that has evaded me for a minute. I remember growing up and being scared of the visuals (which in retrospect makes sense), but growing up (and finally watching it) is realizing this is actual quite a beautiful and poignant tale.

The movie holds #sobaditsgood cult status, with repute, as 1 of the worst British film's ever made, which though by no means a great movie, I don't think is altogether fair. This film is at least entertaining & never gets dull. From #cultdirector Francis (Tales From The Crypt, 72, The Ghoul, 75) who described the movie, as terrible & expressed regret at having made this movie. While Francis & others amid the crew & cast have certainly made better, this movie has some good points about it. #desmonddickinson 's well framed cinematography makes good use of scenic English countryside & there's a dramatic orchestral score from #johnscott . Alongside a less than scary monster which is reported to have been recycled from a gorilla suit used in Kubrick's '2001 A Space Oddity', 68, the film also showcases a little but not enough wonderful stop motion dinosaur imagery rendered by the legendary #willisobrien & #rayharryhausen lifted directly from the nature documentary 'The Animal World', 56. The film has a decent cast too headed up by Hollywood A lister #joancrawford in her last ever movie role. The infamous 'Mommie Dearest' was a 1st rate actress & doesn't give a bad performance here. A respected cast in support including #michaelgough #bernardkay #kimbraden & #johnhamill' : none whom are at their best but Trog's solid bad movie repute, stems from it's implausible premise, the ridiculous scenarios it presents & the awful, corny, often times pseudo scientifically driven script, from #peterbryan, #johngilling, & #abenkandel. This is basically a lesser take on Frankenstein. Frozen in ice since the age of the dinosaurs, a troglodyte cave man is discovered. Fine once unthawed, Dr Brockton (Crawford) domesticates the beast. However Trog is let loose by bad guy land owner Sam (Gough) & off on a rampage he goes, seizing a little girl, trouble follows. The world is not ready for missing link resurrection. I'm not sure if the humour's deliberate or unintentional but it's fun. Semi recommended.

Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny And Girly (1970). Directed by Freddie Francis. Adapted from the play 'Happy Family' by Maisie Mosco. "You must have rules. A happy family needs rules..." Watch this instead of the annoying 'Saltburn' if you want a truly punky, subversive take on British class conflict (here, as it should be, it is the upper class portrayed as psychotic & parasitic rather than those pesky, aspiring proles/bourgeoisie). In the style of the 'Gormenghast' trilogy, an aristocratic family gone to seed has been reduced to acting out a set of infantile, obsolete rituals. They only leave the manor grounds to kidnap members of the lower classes & force them to take part in increasingly homicidal 'games'. As well as showing a healthy disrespect for the over privileged & the 'nice' aspects of English culture in general (Dickens, 'The Water Babies') 'Girly' succeeds in being both funny & disturbing. It could also be seen as a critique of the 'Alfie' style 60's 'ladies man' as the family's latest 'new friend' (i.e. prisoner) sets out to seduce all the women of the household but never gains the power or respect he assumes will follow. Parts of the film have the feel of a superior 'Avengers' episode & there is a comic 'axe through the door' scene ten years ahead of 'The Shining', as well as a lethal 'Oranges & Lemons' game that predates 'The Wicker Man'. Excellent performances all round (although my favourite, Imogen Hassall, as ever, exits too early). En Girly nos encontramos con una película muy peculiar en donde se nos presenta a una familia que haría las delicias de Rob Zombie y es que está compuesta por una madre, un hijo, una hija y una niñera de lo más extraños y dulce e inocentemente perversos. GESCHICHTEN DIE ZUM WAHNSINN FÜHREN (Tales That Whitness Madness; 1973) In der psychiatrischen Klinik von Doktor Tremayne verwischen die Grenzen zwischen Wahnsinn und Wirklichkeit auf erschreckende Weise.Tremayne „weiß“ um die meist blutigen Geheimnisse seiner vier besonders zu beobachtenden Patienten und schildert deren Geschichten dem eben eingetroffenen Klinik-Inspekteur. Da ist das zähnefletschende Trauma eines kleinen Jungen: ein Tiger, der dessen ewig streitende Eltern schließlich zerfetzt und sehr reale Spuren seines blutigen Tuns hinterlässt. Und da ist der seltsame Tod von Onkel Albert, dessen Blicke aus dem vergilbten Rahmen Feuer, Tod und Zeit zu bestimmen scheinen. Oder die Geschichte von Brian: Er liebt einen morschen alten Baum voller Geheimnisse mehr als seine attraktive Frau. Und schließlich Kimo: Der Hawaiianer zelebriert in aller Öffentlichkeit ein menschliches Blutopfer… Als großer Fan von Horror-Anthologien darf natürlich auch GESCHICHTEN DIE ZUM WAHNSINN FÜHREN nicht in meiner Sammlung fehlen. Die vier Stories sind vom Stil her völlig unterschiedlich gehalten. Die erste zum Beispiel passt vom Stil her zu den Filmen der damaligen Jetztzeit, also der frühen 70er, wobei die Zweite eher wie eine klassische Story von Hammer Films wirkt. Storie 3 - welche mir am besten gefällt - könnte dann vom Stil und der Pointe her tatsächlich eine Geschichte aus der Gruft sein. Nur Storie 4 fällt qualitativ etwas ab und hat auch ein ziemlich unspektakuläres Ende zu bieten - man hätte diese Storie besser nicht an den Schluss gesetzt. Aber zumindest bietet die MADHOUSE-ähnliche Rahmenhandlung noch einen schönen, surrealen Abschluss. The look of Peter Cushing as 𝕬𝖗𝖙𝖍𝖚𝖗 𝕲𝖗𝖎𝖒𝖘𝖉𝖞𝖐𝖊 in the very awesome Amicus anthology, 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁 (1972), is great. The way they made his face look so gaunt, with the sunken in cheek bones, is so effective. And whatever is over his eyes, adds a lot to the look as well. The entire film is sweet, but this is the most memorable thing about it for me. I've already said that Christopher Lee was my favorite version of Dracula, but when it comes to ol' Frankenstein's monster? I will gladly give the throne to Boris Karloff. BUT...I do really enjoy and appreciate Hammer's take on the big guy. And yes, I know I'm missing a few Hammer Frankenstein films in this, but the ones I'm missing feature monsters that aren't really...monstrous. Like let's say, 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙞𝙣 (1958) for example. Great performance from Michael Gwynn as the monster, but for the majority of the film he looks like a regular guy. He does begin to deteriorate as the film goes along, but even then his appearance is rather safe. The same sentiment goes for 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙞𝙣 𝘾𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣 (1967). I just like Frankenstein's monster to be grotesque. The uglier, the better.
