We feel very privileged to have taken over a site with such rich ecological diversity: plants, shrubs, trees growing wild for several decades. As you can see from these photographs, the site was completely overgrown. An old homemade greenhouse overtaken by nettles, the landscape overun with bryors. We have enjoyed allowing the landscape to reveal itself to us bit by bit, uncovering hidden gems like mature trees and beautiful rock. This has influenced the design process; iterative, respectful, and highlighting the natural assets which we hope will be the cornerstone of our project. We can’t wait to show you. 📸 : @kharytonovaa and @maxjonesstudio

Ulex europaeus Ubiquitous plant in the Irish landscape, the flowers smell of coconut this time of year. Gorse is a pioneer species flourishing on rocky poor ground and paving the way for other species to become established. Gorse is also a nitrogen-fixing plant, which means it fertilizes the soil. In the past in Ireland, gorse was ground into animal fodder when there was no available grazing. If you try to pick gorse it is quite prickly so beware!

NATIVE is an ode to Irish design. We want to celebrate our favourite makers past and present; from traditional Irish vernacular, to contemporary pieces. NATIVE was conceived as a space where design lovers can enjoy design classics, and we have put a lot of effort into collecting our favourites. We look forward to introducing you to these iconic pieces, starting with one of our all-time favourites: the Bunbeg chair by Crannac. Crannac was the first, and only, mid-century modern furniture manufactured in Ireland from 1962. Designed with the help of Arthur Edwards and designers from Scandinavia seconded to Irish companies through the ‘Nordic Programme’ (organised by the Kilkenny Design workshops), the Bunbeg is today a design classic. Made of afromosia, or African teak, imported from Ghana, and covered in Irish tweed, the Bunbeg is a testament to Irish-Scandinavian design collaboration, and a worthy icon of Irish product design.

I feel like a lot of people would miss this Northern Ireland spot for a view because you have to walk a second from the parking lot and actual viewing platforms. The spot on maps is called Magheracross viewpoint and there are two platforms. However to get this view of the arch you need to walk out of the parking lot and walk right for a minute! 🌊 . . . . . #northernireland #northernirelandphotography #irelandcoast #magheracrossviewpoint

The NATIVE x NAPS collaboration started two years ago when we first came across Katya’s beautiful Irish-made linen bedding. We were impressed by NAPS commitment to sustainability and our shared beliefs in craft and provenance. Several projects later, we are delighted to be working with NAPS to design and make NATIVE’s bespoke bedding, towels, and soft furnishings. Katya has been part of the journey from the onset, and this collaboration has been a true meeting of minds. We are ever so grateful to Katya and NAPS for their professionalism, great eye, beautiful aesthetics, and hard work.

We asked some early guests that stayed in our cabin to share some top tips for West Cork. Hello friends We are Katya and Nastya, a creative duo and best friends. We have admired NATIVE’s work for years and are now proud to be part of the project. While Nastya is in charge of creative direction and communications, Katya, the founder of @napsstudios, is responsible for all textiles. Both of us moved to Ireland over five years ago, and by now, we are done with all the tourist bucket lists. But we love exploring Ireland, so we started asking our Irish friends about the country’s hidden gems and kept hearing about the mysterious West Cork. If you had one single Saturday in West Cork - we believe its the best way to spend it: / Wake up early and go for a swim in Lough Hyne Lake. Yes, it’s cold, but so worth it - you’ll feel refreshed and energetic for the long day ahead. / Now that you’re hungry go to Farmer’s market in Skibbereen for breakfast. If you feel lost, here’s our menu - a slice of Gubeen, a handful of fresh tomatoes & a heavenly crépe from @_la_creperie_. A highlight of our visit was finding a pair of beautiful vintage cups - so it’s not just about the food! / If the weather is good, catch a boat to Cape Clear from Baltimore (its a scenic ride and you might be lucky to see dolphins on the way) and make a full ring around the island. Explore its diversity of nature and beautiful coasts. Stop by for goat milk ice cream at @cleiregoats. / Finish the day with some cool live beats and pizza at the famous @connollysofleap. Isn’t it a perfect Saturday? Get a long sleep and do more exploring on Sunday. With love, Katya & Nastya

Do you like our new logo? NATIVE collaborated with Studio Doran on an updated brand identity. The result is a custom font, hand drawn logo, illustrations, and new colour palette. The font reminded us of carpenter’s marriage marks, and textured Ogham of NATIVE’s sense of place; in nature. And our mission; rewilding. Eibhlín is the founder of Studio Doran, a Paris-based creative agency. She was inspired by the site’s biodiversity and rich array of native trees to bring a more natural and textured look and feel to NATIVE. We love it and hope you do too! “I’m delighted to be part of what Didi and Simon are creating. I was inspired by their approach to the land, architecture and the authentic experience that is being developed in a unique Irish location. It’s a magical project that is being carried out with so much passion, care and consideration and I can’t wait to see the final outcome”. Eibhlín

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Our favourite tree on site is a Scots pine. It was planted 84 years ago on some rock, by the former owner’s grandfather. Because it was planted on a rock, it has bonsaied- it has not grown in the last 40 years, sustained on sufficient nutrients to survive but not prosper. This has led to a beautiful sculptural shape. Scots pine is an important native Irish tree (despite the Scottish sounding name). The Irish landscape of the past was not of bare green fields, but would have been covered in Scots pine, Oak, Birch and other native trees. Much of the tree coverage in the west of Ireland, however, is believed to have been destroyed after the battle of Kinsale. Rebels and wolves were thought to hide in the forests so the woodlands, a valuable commodity, were cleared and sold. Other species were able to regenerate but Scots pine cannot be coppiced and was consequently believed to have been completely eradicated in Ireland. Around the 1700s estates were set up around Ireland, many for absentee landlords, farming the land. Trees were planted, such as Beech trees (Fagus sylvatica) forming beautiful Beech avenues. These included Scots pine which were planted as shelter belts on the edge of estates due to their wind-resistant properties. These Scots pine, however, were genetically Scottish, as there were none believed to be left in Ireland. Stands of the original Irish Scots pine, however, were recently discovered in Co. Clare. These have a slightly more slender trunk, have a more reddish in tone and a smoother bark than their Scottish counterpart. Stands were first planted across twenty plots in Ireland and Scotland, including Glengarriff and Priest’s Leap in Co. Cork, and and Dale Wood and Torc in Co. Kerry near us. You can visit these trees but also buy these seeds and grow you own. 📸: @katescrays

Snaps from the past. The O’Driscoll family lived on the farm in Ballydehob for many generations. They ran a small unmechanised farm with some cows and a dairy. We found a scythe still standing in the barn, and some old milk churns. The farmhouse was famous for late night céilí dances. Many of the older neighbours have called round to recount stories of good times had in the house. In front of the farmhouse is a small vernacular stone and slate hut, where the community would purchase milk from the farm. A happy place, full of people and chats.

Some pics from our first day at NATIVE Ballydehob; a former old dairy farm from 1815, right in the centre of the village. It was last farmed by horse and cart in the 80s, and was left to overgrow for some 30 years. We spent the first few days discovering the history of the landscape, uncovering beautiful wild seeded trees among the gorse and shrubs. We found Willow, Birch, Oak, Ash, Holly, and beautiful mature Scots pine. 📸 by @maxjonesstudio

Connemara finds its origins in the ancient Gaelic tribe or family known as Conmhaícne, who inhabited the region that now constitutes the province of Connaught in western Ireland. This region, located west of Galway City, came to be known as Conmhaícne Mara, denoting the coastal dwelling place of the Conmhaícne descendants. Notably, it hosts the largest Gaeltacht, or Irish-speaking area, in Ireland. Connemara holds the majestic presence of the untamed Atlantic Ocean on one side, with rugged mountains in the midst, and the expansive Lakes Corrib and Mask dividing it from the rest of Ireland. #connemara #visitireland #visitconnemara #hikingireland #gaelic #westernireland #galway #galwayireland #irish #atlanticocean #nationalpark #untaimed #coastline #irelandcoast

Vision The 402 Art Collective will celebrate our right to expression and reflect on the human experience with a new exhibition, ‘For Shame,’ which launched at Arklow Library on Tuesday, February 13th at 6.30 p.m. Running until February 29, the exhibition showcases seven local visual artists, Eleanor O’Reilly, Irene Plazewska, James Burke, Nadia Ramoutar, Niki Keane, Pauline Merry, and Sean Redmond. Sharing their artistic take on pressing human rights issues, the artists broach topics including inequality, discrimination, exclusion, gender-based violence and war, suggesting that both people and art can only thrive in a world of free from fear, violence, discrimination and repression. “When the Taliban destroyed Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Buddhas, when Hitler burned books, when Pasternak was forced to decline the Nobel Prize for Dr Zhivago and declared an enemy of the Soviet people, we saw the truth about art,” a 402 spokesperson said.
