Next I am going to quote from Rick Just blog I found online: "Boise has two statues of President Abraham Lincoln. The first is on the capitol grounds in front of Idaho’s statehouse. It is the oldest Lincoln statue in the West. It was first installed at the Soldiers Home in 1915, then moved to the Idaho Veterans Home in East Boise. In 2009 it was moved to its present location. It's one of six duplicates of a piece sculpted by Alphonso Pelzer. The original statue is in New Jersey." In 1858, tragedy struck when the original red brick schoolhouse of Lincoln, Canada was engulfed by flames. A new chapter began in 1859 with the construction of a remarkable limestone building. This wasn't just any school; it was a beacon of innovation and community spirit. Its design was ahead of its time, featuring large, illuminating windows and a color scheme that encouraged attention and obedience. The sloped floor ensured every student could see their teacher, making learning accessible for all. But this school was more than its architecture; it was the heart of the community. Hosting the Ladies Intellectual Club, adult German language classes, and the much-anticipated annual Christmas pageant, it became a beloved gathering spot. Despite its reputation for hosting "difficult" students, mainly farm boys with responsibilities that often kept them from school, it stood as a testament to resilience and education for 89 years. It was transformed into a museum in 1953, and in 1997 it was restored to its 1908 glory. The schoolhouse now offers a unique field trip experience where children roleplay as students from the past, learning in a one-room school. Open in the summer, this historical gem offers a glimpse into the lives of those who learned and taught here over a century ago. We ended up at the Judge Joseph Holt home in Breckinridge county for our eclipse viewing today. We got 99.5% totality there. (I know, I know. It’s not the same as 100%, but it was pretty cool nonetheless, and we couldn’t have asked for a lovelier setting. We had the whole beautiful place to ourselves!) My favorite part: As it grew darker, the peeping of frogs down on the Ohio and all around us grew louder and louder. As the light returned, the peeping slowly faded away again as if the frogs were saying, “Well, okay. We thought it was time for us to sing, but maybe not…” 🤔

Just some old bricks? 🤔 Nope… It’s a Roman gate! 🏛️ Lincoln was a stronghold for the Romans in Britain and a legionary fortress was built in the city. The modern A46 (which I have driven many a time) is actually part of the Fosse Way, a Roman road built during the first and second centuries AD which linked Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter) to Lindum Colonia which is, you guessed it… Lincoln! The images here are of the Roman East Gate. They appear sunken but this was actually the street level at the time of Roman occupation. The gate would have been a high traffic area of the city, providing access to the legionary fortress located in the city. It’s east facing so as to be more defensive towards an attack from the North Sea. Once a wooden structure, the gate was rebuilt in stone sometime in the third century AD! The East Gate is not the only Roman site that you can visit in Lincoln either, there is the Newport Arch which was once the north gate of the city and faced onto Ermine Street (the Roman road that linked London and York). The arch is also the only Roman archway that is still in use, as in cars still pass through it. The Roman lower west gate also remains as well as a Roman well, you can even see parts of the original Fosse Way under glass in St Mary’s Guildhall! And, if you’re hardy enough to walk up the very literal (and definitely not overexaggerated) Steep Hill you can see remains of the Upper South Gate inside number 44, Steep Hill. Lincoln is a complete melting pot of history, but if you’re a keen classicist it’s definitely worth a visit with so much Roman archaeology still visible and in use today! Another iconic feature of Lincolnshire’s heritage is the beautiful Lincoln Cathedral! 🔔 The cathedral is incredibly significant because it actually cares for one of the only four remaining copies of the original Magna Carta, though it is displayed in Lincoln Castle just opposite. The Magna Carta is a document which was signed in 1215, it established fundamental rights and principles that have had a lasting impact on our country! 📜 The earliest parts of the cathedral are dated to 1072, and the building was completed by 1092. It was actually heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1185 and subsequently rebuilt in a Gothic style. In 1311 it actually became to the tallest building in the world! Though now it certainly does not compare to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai 😅 Besides the Magna Carta, the other most famous inhabitant of the cathedral is the pesky Lincoln Imp. The legend goes that Satan sent the imp to earth to cause mayhem and, finding itself at Lincoln Cathedral, the imp did just that. However, an angel appeared in the cathedral’s Angel Choir and, putting a stop to the imps destructive path, turned the imp to stone! 💥 You can still see the imp today in the cathedral, and you can try and find it in one of my photos here… can you see it? While the other 26 items are interesting on their own, the $5 Confederate bill is the item that sparks the most controversy. People ask, “why would Lincoln, the leader of the Union, carry around a symbol of the group who tried to destroy the Union?” Many have speculated the reason why he would have this bill, but it is widely accepted that Lincoln actually owned this bill as a souvenir. Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy, fell on the night of April 2nd 1865. This was a huge loss for the Confederacy as Richmond was the chief distribution center for their weapons, supplies, and troops. This loss was the catalyst for the Confederacy to surrender to the Union and end America’s Civil War. Two days later on April 4th, Lincoln visited the Union occupied Richmond with his son Tad, who were both happily greeted by the poor white and African-American people of Richmond. During his visit, he gained possession of the $5 Confederate bill. He decided to keep the worthless bill as a souvenir of American history and all he had achieved. To Lincoln, this worthless $5 bill held value as it was his symbol of accomplishment and victory over the Confederacy. 🏛️ Unveiling history at the Haines Cemetery in #LincolnON! 🌳 Nestled in the historic grounds of the @lincolnmuseumon lies the final resting place of early Pennsylvanian-German Mennonite settlers from the Jordan district, dating back to the 1840s. 🏚️ Originally beside the Jordan Mennonite Church, the Haines Cemetery served the community from 1840 to 1874. In 2022, a team of restoration specialists embarked on a journey to recover and reconstruct monuments to ensure public safety and preserve and protect heritage assets. The fruits of their labour are now on display, marking the completion of this significant project. 🪦 See the photos above for a captivating before-and-after view of the restoration work. This transformation includes the monument of Barbara Wismer (1794-1871), an early settler who moved to Louth Township (now Lincoln) from Waterloo Township in 1834. Married to Isaac Wismer, they called the Vintage House home, just across from Cave Springs Winery. Barbara's stone now stands proudly restored for present and future generations. Shuttleworth House. Lego model created and rendered in Brickworks Studio, 11088 pieces. IRL it would weigh 16.5kg, be 835mm high and the base measure 800 x 585mm. Tower blocks are surprisingly difficult to represent accurately in Lego because of the limitations of scale and proportion with the bricks available. This one (in my former home city) leant itself well, being able to keep faithful to the proportions and include a reasonable level of detail (on the balconies and rooftop for example) without the model getting too large, although it is still pretty huge! Shuttleworth House is a 17 storey tower block in the Stamp End area of Lincoln. The block was completed in 1966 and has 130 flats, its was designed in the modernist style and the version I have built here reflects the original design - like many tower blocks of its age it has has now been over clad with modern insulating panels. The tower is named after Joseph Shuttleworth, co founder of the engineering company Clayton Shuttleworth & Co in 1842, the companies engineering works were based directly opposite the site of the tower on the opposite bank of the river Witham. They were enormously successful and a world leader in their field, manufacturing traction engines, locomotives and agricultural machinery. During the first world war they also made Sopwith Camel aircraft for the Royal Flying Corps - it was one the Camels built at the Lincoln works which was flown by Canadian pilot Roy Brown when he shot down the Red Baron Manfred von Richthofen.
