The White Tiger by Arvind Adiga<<

5/7/2024, 4:02:49 PM

✒️ #bookstagram #instabooks #station11 #daslichtderletztentage #emilystjohnmandel #pandemie #dystopie #lesen #novel #manbookerprize #goodreads #reading #kitap #postapocalyptic #roman #lesenswert

📖May Hopefuls📖 My one and only hopeful this month is the hugely hyped and massively popular A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara. Swipe for some GoodReads reviews which put me on edge to say the least! I figure if I make this my one and only reading goal this month it will give me plenty of time to put it down and escape from it for a few days sometimes if it gets too much! I’ve had this on my tbr for so long and have been avoiding it for two main reasons: hype and heartbreak! I have heard amazing things about the characters, writing and unforgettable plot, but also how devastating it is! Let me know all your thoughts and feelings on this. Is it worth the hype? A Little Life follows four college classmates-broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition-as they move to New York in search of fame and fortune. While their relationships, which are tinged by addiction, success, and pride, deepen over the decades, the men are held together by their devotion to the brilliant, enigmatic Jude, a man scarred by an unspeakable childhood trauma. A hymn to brotherly bonds and a masterful depiction of love in the twenty-first century. Hanya Yanagihara's stunning novel is about the families we are born into, and those that we make for ourselves. #manbookerprize #alittlelife #hanyayanagihara #bestsellingauthor #littlelife #classmates

This book was hugely talked about in 2017-2018 and was put on many important/notable books of the year lists, plus it won the Man Booker Prize and (funny enough) didn't get listed for the National Book Award. The second American winner of the UK award - maybe they like satirical American history books. Maybe they just really thought that bouncy ghost members were hilarious Who knows. Anyway, a book about parental loss, grief, and mourning, in many forms. Added to the collective grief of the entire graveyard and that of the nation mourning the casualties of the Civil War. Saunders balances powerful and sad imagery with that of ghost orgies. He adds completely made up historical references to tie up and throw shade on the real ones. It's just hilarious and absurd but there's a great story about moving on, acceptance, going forward, under all of it The audiobook is a star studded full cast that also won the 2018 audie award for Best audiobook. I liked it once I read enough to get the hand of the reference citations Have you read it? #ilcantodelprofeta #prophetsong #PaulLynch #25aprilesempre #66and2nd #irishliterature #bookerprize #manbookerprize #letteraturadistopica #distopia

Not me thinking I'm a beast for finishing the book in two evenings and then discovering it's designed to be read in one go 👍 Ive never read anything quite like this. Schweblin manages to create absolute chaos for the main character and the readers, while simultaneously keeping complete control via a structured storytelling motif and style. I've seldom felt both in danger and safe so much with any book. #feverdream #blackbooks #samantaschweblin #manbookerprize #oneworldbooks #oneworldpublishing #readingtime #currentlyreading #lovetoread #books2024 #booksbooksbooks #bookaddict #instabooks #instareads #bookishlove #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramer #recentlyread #readersofinstagram #readersofig #bookish #fiction #microfiction #tbrlist #tbr #translated #translatedbooks #pageturner #paperback

‘Sometimes it is years before we can see who are the heroes in an affair and who are the victims’. It’s May 1536 and Anne Boleyn is dead. And Thomas Cromwell emerges from the bloodbath of her execution to climb higher in rank than ever before. With the new queen Jane set to take the throne, and hopefully provide Henry with his long awaited male heir, Cromwell continues his innovative, religious reform of England. But as time progresses, Jane Seymour dies and Henry looks set to take yet another wife. But Cromwell’s enemies are gathering, whispering in the ear of a paranoid and hot tempered King. Fate is catching up with Cromwell, and how long until his head joins the bloody ranks of those killed by Henry’s whim? The final of the #wolfhalltrilogy and you can see why it was 8 years in the making. The level of detail, historical accuracy and research that must have gone into this book is truly admirable. Cromwell remains an extremely complicated character. At times you can’t help but sympathise with him, other times you’re left wondering if he is fighting for his own glory or his King’s. It is a chunk, but the story is so gripping I flew through it fairly fast. For anyone with an interest in #tudorhistory or #historicalfiction this whole series is a must and 100% worth the time to read it. 5 🌟 #themirrorandthelight #bringupthebodies #wolfhall #hilarymantel #thomascromwelltrilogy #thomascromwell #bookstagram #bookfluencer #readstagram #readersofinstagram #readersofig #readersofinsta #bookreview #bookrecommendations #booksbooksbooks #manbookerprize #manbookerprizewinner

I have been spending far too much (unpaid) time at work lately and it has left me too exhausted to do really anything else so Bookstagram has taken a bit of a backseat unfortunately.

Fun fact: I’ve been reading so much about the Troubles recently, that I’ve started dreaming about the IRA.  🇮🇪 SAY NOTHING (5/5 🌟) I’ve been eyeing this book for years, but I became disillusioned with true crime around the time of its pub date, so I never picked it up off the shelf. I was a fool! SAY NOTHING is so much more than the story of one murder, it’s a political history book that manages to be simultaneously wide-encompassing and intimate. Honestly, I might even use the word “masterpiece.”  🌇 MILKMAN (4/5 🌟) Once again, another book that I’ve been meaning to read for years. This is a stream of consciousness, with no proper names, and full of rambling tangents. I highly recommend the audiobook; I don’t think I could handle the lengthy chapters in print. 🥃 TRESPASSES (4/5 🌟) I have to share this quote because I got such a kick out of it: “DON’T FALL FOR A MARRIED PROD TWICE YOUR AGE...DON’T AGREE TO SEE HIM EVERY SINGLE TIME IT SUITS HIM…” (However, if you’re reading this for the affair, hoping it’ll be like a Sally Rooney novel, you may be disappointed.)  I spoiled myself reading SHUGGIE BAIN and MILKMAN right before this—those books (respectively) portrayed an alcoholic mother and Troubles-inducing paranoia/groupthink soooo much better. That being said, it was a fine read; the ending was just a bit too neat for me. I did really love how important Gaelic was to the plot. I’m learning Scottish Gaelic (gah-lick, not gay-lick like the Irish), so while they’re distinct languages, it was super fun to be able to pick up on some similarities. Also, TRESPASSES gets bonus points because it mentions Barry Lyndon in the epigraph and in the text.

I just spent the past hour holding back tears in my cubicle because of this audiobook. SHUGGIE BAIN is a beautiful, earnest portrayal of 1980s Glasgow, focusing on the working class Bain family—and in particular the devotion the youngest of the children, sweet Shuggie, feels for his alcoholic mother, Agnes.  douglas_stuart dedicates the book to his mother, stating in the acknowledgments: “I owe everything to the memories of my mother and her struggle.” Such a bittersweet sentiment; if I dwell on it any longer, I might actually cry at my desk. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Swipe to see some of Raymond Depardon’s photos of 80s Glasgow, which inspired the author. More images and the full quotes can be found on @mrporter’s website. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Also: This fall, I’m visiting Scotland, so I’m trying to read as much as possible in preparation. Please send recommendations ! A lot of what I’m seeing online are classics, highlander romances, and Edinburgh noir—I love genre fiction as much as the next person, but I’m hoping to read some stuff that are more true-to-life...or at least have semi-regular Irn-Bru references like SHUGGIE BAIN, lol.

THE TONGUE IS THE STRONGEST MUSCLE Kapfo in our Naga Ao Shirt. Naga textile pattern in soft handwoven cotton. Available on www.homelandelegies.com “There are countries out there where people speak English. But not like us - we have our own languages hidden in our carry-on luggage, in our cosmetics bags, only ever using English when we travel, and then only in foreign countries, to foreign people. It’s hard to imagine, but English is their real language! Oftentimes their only language. They don’t have anything to fall back on or to turn to in moments of doubt. How lost they must feel in the world, where all instructions, all the lyrics of all the stupidest possible songs, all the menus, all the excruciating pamphlets and brochures - even the buttons in the lift! - are in their private language. They may be understood by anyone at any moment, whenever they open their mouths. They must have to write things down in special codes. Wherever they are, people have unlimited access to them - they are accessible to everyone and everything! I heard there are plans in the works to get them some little language of their own, one of those dead ones no one else is using anyway, just so that for once they can have something just for themselves.” ~Flights, Olga Tokarcruk

A little life is what it is. I have read these 816 pages like it was drug and I am an addict. As in I needed to know what happens at the end and my life depended on it. I couldn’t associate particularly with any of the four protagonists but there moments in the book that touches you like light coming from space. It clears your mind and brings you close to reality, brings you close to memories that you didn’t know you had. The book manifests that we ought to live the finite number of days we are granted in this sojourn with utmost grace and kindness. Kindness, not just for people around us but for ourselves. The book cradles love when love has settled like dust, when love has passed the test of time and it simply sustains. The book talks of love which is nestled in friendship, friendship that lasts a lifetime, friendship which makes you safe, secure and heard. Deborah Levy uzun zamandır okumak istediğim bir yazardı. Sonunda iki kitabını aldım. Bugün paylaştığım Sıcak Süt, 2012 yılında Man Booker Kitap Ödülünde finale kalmıştı.

Happy Easter, darlings🌼 Here are some of the books (their covers) that make me happy and make me think of spring/new beginnings. It just so happened that Anna Burns' MILKMAN fits the overall Easter colour theme of the year: sunset/sunrise🤔😃🌟 🔸️ Su Šv.

🌌 A Little Life 🌌 So I bought this in October 2021 and I put it off and put it off (too long, too depressing apparently, too much hype, too many TWs, etc.) until @buddyreadbooknook thankfully encouraged me into reading it with a great buddy read! I finished it days ago and still truly do not know how to review it. EVERYONE had warned me it would rip my heart out and then stamp on the remains, but I don't think I believed them. I've read hundreds of books so naively I was like "can't be worse than anything else". Wrong! This is easily one of the most harrowing and depressing books I've ever read ... so why am I also calling it one of the best books I've ever read? Honestly, I really am not sure. There was a point (IYKYK end of part 5) that truly has me questioning why I was reading it. Every time I thought I'd read the worst possible thing, something else surprised me. Also I had thought before I read it that there was definitely no need for it to be this long (still a little dubious on that front) but now I can see why people put the hours into rereading this again and again. I'm not sure I'll read it again for a long time, but so glad I didn't give up! TLDR - read it but don't go in lightly. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa, translated by Stephen Snyder In an unnamed island, things disappear. Things are made to disappear physically and all traces and references to them are also made to disappear. The Memory Police are meant to enforce these disappearances. People forget about the things that disappear and forget that they have forgotten. There are a few who remember. They are identified and taken by the Memory Police. The protagonist is a novelist and her editor is one who remembers. She takes it upon herself with the help of a friend to hide the editor before he is taken by the Memory Police. There are many ways one can approach the novel. There are two themes that resonated with me the most. I'll try to communicate these but I continue to think about these ideas many days after reading the book. Memory and voice. The novel highlights a surprising relationship between memory and voice. The majority of people who are able to forget live as though they were free. The truth is that they only live free within the guardrails that are given to them---they live without many things. The people who remember, however, are marginalized, without voice. Memory and loss. Memory of what is lost is what makes loss painful. When birds and roses and limbs disappeared, people quickly forgot what is now lost and adapted immediately. But is this the ideal of how to deal with loss? I doubt. On the other hand, for those who remember, when things are lost, there is always this imperative to cling to what is lost. Time heals wounds and at some point we can view memories with fondness. #TheMemoryPolice #YokoOgawa #StephenSnyder #TranslatedFiction #speculativefiction #manbookerprize #bookerprize #internationalbookerprize #bookrecommendations #books #bookstagram

#QOTD : Have you heard of the recent Akutagawa Prize controversy? Being one of Japan's most coveted literary awards, named after the legendary Ryunosuke Akutagawa, it made a lot of sense that the public got rather ... confused, when the winner admitted to using AI in her writing process. It has been a heated debate for a while now. [If you don't understand the importance of The Akutagawa Prize, maybe it'll help if I say that Osamu Dazai was absolutely desperate to get it, but he didn't get it at the end of the day.] It leads me to ask : What do you think of AI taking over creative spaces? Like writing, art, etc.? Feel free to have a discussion in the comments. In the meantime, here's a few offbeat literary awards in Japan that you may not have known about! (Yes, there's some nonfiction too.) The 2023 winners are included too, so it may serve as book recommendations as well. Do let me know if you learnt something new! 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨 🎨 weekly wrap-up 🌹🐺 I was so captivated by these books that I read each one in a matter of days... both are love stories, one raw and real, the other fiery and fantastical. It's easy to see why Nicholls is a much adored author and why 'Us' was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize (2014). This novel is simple yet stunningly executed, exploring love in its many forms, across many moments, in a narrative form that is wonderfully witty! The characters are complex yet wholly relatable; the experiences sad and joyfully funny; the settings soulful and special. I loved it 💫 Similarly, it's not hard to see why Sarah J Maas has become a phenomenon of fantasy fiction! ACOTAT is one of those books you just can't put down. The characters capture your heart, and the settings are described in beautiful detail, transporting you to a world that, like Feyre, you don't want to leave! The rest of the series is on order 🙌 Chelsea x #books #review #bookstagram #romance #fantasy #fiction #inspiration #bestsellers #sarahjmaas #acourtofthornsandroses #davidnicholls #manbookerprize

Happy Saturday everyone! I’ve been spending some time off social media. Sometimes it’s nice to bunker down for a while and unwind. I’m hoping to up my posting a bit since I’ve come out of hibernation. Not an avid reader of literary fiction but when it hits me, it hits me hard and gives me an existential crisis. ‘The Colony’ is set in Ireland in the 1970’s and explores colonisation and the problems Irish identity faced. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something a little different and leaves you with a lot of room to dissect the story and think for yourself. #booklover #book #booknerd #bookstagram #bookreview #bookreader #bookrecommendation #manbooker #manbookerprize #bookrecommendations #bookreviewer #booksta #readersofinstagram #literaryfiction #irishauthors #irishbooks #saturdayreading #saturdayreads #weekendreads #weekendreading

Polonyalı yazar Olga Tokarczuk'un "Koşucular" adlı romanı 2007 yılında yayımlanmış. Yazar da kitap da bol ödüllü. "Kenarda durmak.
