Today is Julius Onah’s 41st birthday. Born in Okpoma, Cross River State, Nigeria, he moved around a lot because his father was a Nigerian diplomat. Onah graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia and then received his B.A, from Wesleyan University. From there, he was a Dean’s Fellow at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. So far, he has directed three movies The Girl Is In Trouble (Tubi and Pluto TV), The Cloverfield Paradox (Netflix), and Luce (Hulu and The Roku Channel). Luce 2019 Directed by: Julius Onah Starring: Kelvin Harrison Jr., Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Tim Roth Once in a while you stumble on an absolutely spellbinding masterpiece of a film you’ve somehow never even heard of. Luce is such a film. It’s a dark, extremely layered examination of race, privilege and identity. Frankly, it’s rare to see a movie discussing these topics from such a multifaceted and intelligent perspective. A liberal white couple is forced down a spiral of self-examination as their son Luce, a boy they adopted 10 years ago from a war zone in Eritrea, writes a disturbing essay for a school assignment. How is it possible that this movie is not discussed more widely? It’s easily one of the best films of 2019, a stellar year for cinema. It is a nerve-shattering film that builds breathtaking tension. Luce is the pride of the high school, the star student and the supposed symbol of how great America is and how it works as a society. As the story progresses and doubt is shed upon Luce as whether he’s capable of atrocious acts, a viewer can never be sure if the darkness surfacing within Luce is actually real or if he’s only being stereotyped as a monster, a fallen angel, a Lucifer, if you will. The writing is pitch-perfect, perhaps it being based on a play brings a certain gravitas to the film. The impressive performances by the actors match the material, with Kelvin Harrison Jr. being incredibly nuanced as the titular character and Naomi Watts bringing her absolute A-game. Octavia Spencer is excellent as Luce’s teacher and opponent. There is an ominous, hypnotic score that really adds to the atmosphere. Apart from being a provocative psychodrama with complex characters and a social thriller that sometimes borders on horror, it’s ultimately also an ugly look at what it means to be American, and particularly a privileged American. If you like your movies smart but not self-absorbed, timely but not preachy, and above all bone-chillingly unpredictable, this is a movie for you. Watching Luce feels like watching a fuse burn. It’s a spine-tingling experience, and that sort of uneasiness is not something many films are able to stir up.

LUCE... 7.5/10. RUNTIME- 1 hr 49 mins. GENRES- Drama, mystery. THE PLOT- A married couple is forced to reckon with their idealized image of their son, adopted from war-torn Eritrea, after an alarming discovery by a devoted high school teacher threatens his status as an all-star student. THE GOOD- Kelvin Harrison Jr puts in a fantastic performance here, loved how the plot unfolded in terms of the mystery, great character development & how they kept you on the fence of who is the protagonist/ antagonist, superb acting by the whole cast. THE BAD- Questionable/frustrating actions from the parents in a few parts, the ending may not be to everyone’s preference. THE VERDICT- 7.5/10. I thoroughly enjoyed Luce, knowing little about the plot going in definitely helped keep the mystery as to what is truly going on between characters and their true motives which kept it engaging throughout. Once I had made up my mind as to the true motives of characters It felt like a breath of fresh air from other movies in the genre. I loved how the movie subtly threw hints at you through not just conversations but by expressions expertly acted out by Harrison (Luce) in particular, he really did put in an exceptional performance. MY THURSDAY RECOMMEND Julius and I released our indie features a few days apart in August of 2019 coincidentally and last month marked their one-year anniversaries. Yippee!!! Not that you guys give a shit lol. Just a couple of months back I finally got around to Jules’ social thriller and its level of acting was something I found quite inspiring. The story could have been more relatably told and used better narrative flow but the performances were raw enough to intrigue you and warrant the 90% RT score it got. Not to be snobbish or anything, but watching these upcoming talents hold their own against vets as Tim Roth and Naomi Watts left me slightly depressed because I was reminded how insanely challenging it'd be to find equally compelling actors of their age bracket over here. I'd just screened almost two hundred audition monologues from my inbox and literally wanted to vomit at times lol. They weren't all bad though. Some were pretty decent but none per se blew my socks off. Then again, those were a mere two hundred clips as against the one thousand plus Jules auditioned for the part Kelvin Harrison Jr. eventually booked. So I’ll cut us some slack. Finding those diamonds in the rough I guess isn’t a day’s job. Still, how he got his actors to bare their souls AND BODIES lol was a cipher to me. 『ルース・エドガー』鑑賞。 人を“何”でその人だと決めているのだろう。 と、哲学的な境地にいってしまう映画だった。 ステレオタイプ、先入観、偏見、差別が 目の前にいる人の判断基準になり、 人はそこからズレると自分の価値観でその人を修正したがる生き物なのかもしれない。 奥深すぎる映画だったし、 人種差別を描いている映画なのだけれど、 黒人が黒人を差別するという、見ると「そういうこともあるよな」と思うのに考えさえ浮かばなかった。 アジアに置き換えたら分かりやすかった。 アジア人がアジア人を差別する。この構図と何らかわりなかった。。 * * * 偏見や差別と『息子をどこまで信じられるか』というテーマが上手くマッチして、 ホラーより怖かった。 全人類が見るべき映画だし、 見てから複数人と語り合う映画だなと。 エリトリアからアメリカ人夫婦の養子になってアメリカ人になったルース。 「ペンを持つより先に銃を持つ国で育った彼」というイメージから、私だったらどれだけ彼を信じられるだろうか。 でも生まれ育った国や肌の色でその人を判断してはいけない。 ルースの「黒人の僕は優等生で無ければならない。そこから少しでもはみ出してはならない。 聖人でなければモンスターなんだ。」 というニュアンスのセリフが忘れられない。 「聖人」のイメージから1歩でもズレたら「怪物」になる。その間はない。 それぞれが思い描く「ルース像」にハマらなければ落とさせる。 この映画は余韻がすごい。 見てよかった。 #ルース・エドガー #ルースエドガー #luce #lucemovie #映画 #映画館 #movies #movie #2020yaxi映画

The movie is dramatic for sure and can be uncomfortable at times. All of the actors do a great job, especially Kelvin Harrison Jr and Octavia Spencer. Thier performances shine. The story is believable and moves right along. It keeps you interested and engaged. It tackles a theme of race and how certain accusations can affect people. It's not a film you're going to repeatedly watch but it will make you think. Luce is a provacative film that is not only dramatic but also entertaining. Their film has so much more going on underneath the surface than meets even the most critical eye. Lee’s adaptation of his own work is instantly fresh and endlessly interesting as it attempts to tell a story of white guilt, expected obedience, and black existentialism via a cerebral attack of predefined roles that are dropped in the middle of an affluent, lily-white world. Each main character is complex, shaped with such thoughtful care and each action by the cast.
