We love educating, and sharing about the beekeeping process, and how we are able to bring you pure SD honey! So we are doing a fun 3 part series on something we find so fascinating: Queen Bees! So, for part 1, have you ever wondered how a new hive gets its queen? We actually bring in a queen we’ve sourced! These new queens find their homes in hives that are either newly formed from a split or in need of new leadership due to an aging queen. This practice ensures growth and stability of our bee farm! It all starts with a special delivery: Vented boxes arrive in the mail, carrying future queens of a hive. Enclosed in her own little cage, complete with a candied entrance (we’ll learn why in a moment!). The magic begins when we introduce her to the new hive. The candy gate serves as a crucial timer, taking about three days for the queen to chew her way through. This barrier isn’t just for her escape; it’s a vital period for the hive to familiarize themselves with her unique pheromones. Without this grace period, the hive might not accept her. Once she breaks through, nature takes over, and her Queen instincts begin as she starts her “rule” over the hive!
