World Maternal Mental Health Day raises awareness of mental health challenges experienced by one in five mums during pregnancy and after childbirth. Tweddle employs a team of mental health clinicians to support parents during the peri-natal period. Having an experienced team is important. Maternal mental health issues, such as postnatal depression, anxiety, and stress, can have serious consequences for both the mother and the child if left untreated. Fortunately, evidence shows that early intervention and support can help mitigate negative effects and promote positive outcomes for mother, partners, children, and the whole family. Mental health issues can affect bonding and attachment between the mother and baby, breastfeeding, and overall family dynamics. By acknowledging the impacts of perinatal mental health challenges, we can promote understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage access to mental health services. Many factors can contribute to the development of postnatal depression and anxiety. They include hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, adjustment to parenting, unrealistic expectations, stress, and overwhelm. History of mental health Issues also present a factor. Women with a history of depression, anxiety, or other mental health disorders are at an increased risk of experiencing postnatal depression and anxiety. Postnatal depression and anxiety are influenced by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. Seeking support from Early Parenting Centres, healthcare providers, therapists, and support groups can be instrumental in managing these conditions and promoting maternal well-being.
