After premiering in France in June 2023 and screening at a variety of genre film festivals like Fantasia International Film Festival, Slash Film Festival, and FrightFest under the name "Farang" (a Thai term meaning “foreigner”), IFC Films snagged director Xavier Gens’s ("Hitman") latest project and renamed it "Mayhem!." Considering the action direction and first unit direction is overseen by "Gangs of London"’s Jude Poyer, the change in title for North American distribution makes a great deal of sense, easily conveying the physical intensity that accompanies each of Nassim Lyes’s lead character Samir’s increasingly challenging skirmishes and frays. However, the original title does a better job of communicating the emotional journey that screenplay writers Gens and Magali Rossitto, in conjunction with Stéphane Cabel ("The Brotherhood of the Wolf") and Guillaume Lemans ("The Night Eats the World"), send Samir on, one in which violence is a response that leads to increased isolation, not salvation. Als Ende Juni '18 bei der Fußball-WM in Russland die letzten Gruppenspiele bestritten wurden, ich der K.O.-Phase entgegenfieberte und bei mir von morgens bis abends nichts anderes als Fußball über die First- und Second Screens flimmerte, gab es plötzlich diese Meldung über die verschwundene thailändische Jugendfußballmannschaft in den Nachrichten. Zwölf Jungs und ihr Trainer sollen sich in der Tham-Luang-Höhle in Nord-Thailand befinden – von Wassermassen, die der Monsun mit sich brachte, eingesperrt und ins Höhleninnere vertrieben; nicht bekannt, ob tot oder lebendig. Die Weltmeisterschaft geriet für mich plötzlich zur Nebensache. Selbst bin ich seit einiger Zeit Trainer einer Kinder-Fußballmannschaft. Wenn es mal auf einen Ausflug mit den Kids geht, hat man schon manchmal im Kopf, dass einem der Kinder was passieren könnte. Ich fühlte mich dem Schicksal also direkt verbunden und war direkt ziemlich angefixt. Fußball nunmehr nur noch auf dem Second Screen steppte ich tagein tagaus durch die News-Portale. Bis heute habe ich die Karte der Höhle mit ihren Chambern, der T-Junction und dem „Pattaya-Beach” detailgetreu vor Augen. Ganz nebenbei weckte das alles bei mir noch böse Erinnerungen an das Unglück des U-Bootes Kursk, was mich als damals 10-Jährigen wirklich übel mitgenommen hatte. Als dann letztes Jahr der Trailer zu Thirteen Lives lief, freute ich mich wahrlich darauf, dass der Film Release feierte - und ich sollte in keinster Weise enttäuscht werden! Dieses Ereignis, welches sich dramatischer kaum hätte abspielen können, wird auf einem erstaunlich hohen Niveau inszeniert. Alle Schauspieler:innen liefern von der ersten bis zur letzten Minute ab, hauchen ihren Rollen Leben ein; wirken einfach echt. Sodass der Film niemals an Glaubwürdigkeit verliert. Viggo Mortensen und Colin Farrell, welche die britischen Höhlen-Taucher darstellen, machen einfach richtig Bock. SSF: Thirteen Lives (2022) | 🌑🌑🌑🌑 | Efter en fotbollsträning bestämmer sig 12 pojkar och deras tränare i laget Wild Boars för att utforska Tham Luang-grottan innan ett födelsekalas senare på kvällen - ett kalas de aldrig ska dyka upp till. Kraftigt regn leder till ökade vattennivåer och stänger in dem, till och med jagar dem djupt in i berget. Nu startar en till synes hopplös räddningsoperation där hela världen engageras i pojkarnas öde. Det här är alltså en verklig händelse som inträffade 2018, om nu någon mot förmodan missat det. Tveksamt eftersom alla världens ögon var riktade mot Thailand den månaden, men se oavsett dokumentären The Rescue (2021) om du inte redan gjort det för hela den otroliga historien. Det känns svårt att misslyckas med en verklighetsbaserad film där historien är så stark, så engagerande och så dramatisk. Särskilt inte när Ron Howard regisserar som redan visat gång på gång att han bemästrar just det. Och han lyckas verkligen, tack och lov, att leverera en vacker, välberättad och framförallt värdig film som fokuserar på de rätta aspekterna, igen. Först och främst Thailand visas upp i all sin skönhet och sitt folks generositet. Nu trodde jag aldrig att någon större vikt skulle läggas på heroism hos de internationella dykarna, men jag blev ändå glatt överraskad över att Thailands perspektiv tar så stor plats. Från den underbara naturen till det hårda arbetet och de uppoffringar lokalbefolkningen gjorde för att få hem sina pojkar. Även om Viggo Mortensens skådespel är lite svår att greppa så gör han och Colin Farrell ett bra jobb. Bäst är ändå Joel Edgerton som kommer in mot slutet i en viktig och känslosam roll - han som i slutändan blev huvudansvarig för pojkarnas överlevnad. Som sagt, svårt att misslyckas med den här berättelsen, men de lyckas upphöja de sista 30 minuterna till en verklig känslostorm. AI LOVE YOU (2022) Flawed but not as awful as said by some Thai audiences. While it's true that the film has chosen a too simplistic and somewhat silly path for a potential premise, I find it enjoyable enough as a romcom to escape a harsh realilty and admire the attractive leads. Roman Molino Dunn's mostly electronic score sits well with some non-orchestral and minimal parts of scores like Rob Simonsen's NERVE and Daft Punk and Joseph Trapanese's TRON; which means that you will get solid vibes of a not-so-distant future with nostalgic stuff. As for thematic material, there are a main theme for A.I. named Dob plus his journey in the real world through Bob's body and a love theme for romantic moments between him and Lana. But as much as all these things seem great and I quite like the main theme regarding its fun rhythms and sounds, I'm terribly underwhelmed by the love theme since it's too atmospheric to be anything special or meaningful especially for the leads. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I really wish it was developed with and defined by more melodies in order to add some depth and conflicts that the film lacks. 'Thirteen Lives' (2022) A grounded and riveting retelling of a fascinating true story. Ron Howard keeps the focus on the heroes and the locals. There's no grandstanding. No big emotional speeches. Howard keeps it as real and true as he can. A very respectful decision by the veteran director. Excellent cinematography. The camerawork is perfect. The score is minimalist but works. Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell are both fantastic. Man, Farrell is having a great year! Joel Edgerton and Tom Bateman are both excellent here. Paul Gleeson is solid. The young actors playing the soccer team all do some wonderful work here. Sahajak Boonthanakit, Shakriya Tarinyawat, Thira Chutikul, and Lewis Fitz-Gerald all give nice performances. Thirteen Lives Plot: A film based on the real life events of the rescue mission that took place in Thailand in 2018, to save the lives of 12 children and their adult football coach who had become trapped in underground caves during a heavy rainstorm. Review: I remember watching this on the news as the story unfolded, and being baffled about why it was taking them so long to get these kids out of a flooded cave when they had so many divers present to help them. Now I’ve seen this film I’m surprised they managed to get any of them out alive! I won’t spoil the ending for anyone who doesn’t remember the outcome, but obviously you can Google it if you really must spoil it for yourself. I think this film delivers a delicate balance of not blaming anyone in particular for mishandling the situation, because from all accounts told it seems like everyone involved gave it everything they had trying to figure out how to them out. An almost impossible situation that does leave you wondering how on earth they got in there in the first place, but it’s fair to keep in mind that those caves were probably much easier to pass through when they weren’t filled with water. Anyway, the cast is international and there are one or two ropey English accents here and there, but overall I thought it was well cast. It’s nice to see Colin Farrell mature as an actor now he’s got his life sorted out, and he plays well with Viggo Mortensen, who is always stunning. You’ll find yourself holding your breath a lot watching this. This was the most intense and heart-stopping 2.5 hours, try not to read into the story and what happened until after the movie for an element of surprise but wow. Humanity is truly incredible and it’s incredibly touching to see how many people united together to do whatever they can to save the lives of these kids. The movie captured the tension of the situation and the mental and physical difficulties of the rescue excellently. You felt every moment and time ticking away on how long the boys would survive and the increasing desperation of trying to save them all. The actors do an outstanding job of bringing these diver's lives into focus, among them Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell and Tom Bateman who were amazing.
