Missed this in it’s an initial release, it only played for a week but managed to catch it on silver screen with the old folks. This is a perfectly enjoyable Sunday after type fair. An engaging enough story but nothing too complicated or out there, it hits all the familiar beats you’d expect from this sort true story sports team movie. With a cast of characters I can’t really remember and thinly written girlfriend and surprise appearance from Hitler, this did the job when watching but I’ll probably never see it again. 6 boys / 10 boats.

“Il grande Gatsby” (2013) by Baz Luhrmann. Dall'omonimo romanzo di Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Già dalla prima inquadratura capiamo che il film è di Baz Luhrmann, come sempre, dato che tutti i suoi lavori portano un marchio inconfondibile. Questo film è di una magnificenza tale da avvicinarsi quasi a “Moulin Rouge!”, ma racconta di un contesto diverso, un contesto in cui lo sfarzo è il mezzo per raccontare un dramma che realmente ha toccato tanti americani negli anni '20. Gatsby è il fallimento del sogno americano: non è un self-made man che con onestà, fede e duro lavoro si è fatto strada nel mondo diventando ricco, ma è un criminale, un contrabbandiere gentiluomo che cerca di usare i soldi per comprare la fiducia e l'amore degli altri. D'altro canto Daisy è peggio, se vogliamo. Volubile, immatura, frivola, a lei interessano davvero solo i soldi. Ma forse non basta. Il film ha delle sequenze stupefacenti, risultato di una cgi di ultima generazione che rende comunque l'effetto fantastico ricercato, e allo stesso tempo ne ha altre che sfiorano la tragedia: ritengo quella in cui Gatsby lancia le camicie addosso a Daisy una delle sequenze più deprimenti e avvilenti mai girate. Più di 2h e mezza che però scorrono meravigliosamente, grazie anche all'ottimo lavoro degli attori e al montaggio efficace. Una storia evergreen che è diventata un pilastro della letteratura americana ma che ha tanto da insegnare anche a noi, che quei famosi “roaring twenties” non li abbiamo di fatto mai conosciuti. Intrattiene e stimola ancora una forte riflessione sulla società capitalistica. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. A buddy of mine is a huge sci-fi fan. It’s pretty much all he reads. A couple of years ago he bought me the first part of The Three Body Problem saga for my birthday, but being a bloke he didn’t follow up and I had to buy the other two copies myself. Last year he read a book that he simply didn’t stop talking about. He described it as this mind bending adventure through space and time that was grounded in reality and the best book he’d ever read. Every once in a while we’d be having a beer, chatting about life and he’d somehow link it back to that book. A loose connection but one he kept reading for. So I went out and got a copy of Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter. And was my friend right in his description? For the most part yes. It’s a fun ride. A grounded Science Fiction book that really has some great cliff hangers and a plot you can get behind. Was it the best book I’ve ever read? Well no it wasn’t. But it’s certainly fun and I’d definitely recommend it as a perfect holiday read on the beach. It’s good escapism, I loved the jeopardy, and above all it’s a fun ride right to the end. AppleTV have just released a trailer for the tv show. I think this could be a good adaptation and with good budget they could use a lot of creativity to build some worlds within this narrative. I like Joel Edgerton and see him as the lead, and think he can make it work. George Clooney ha interpretato tanti ruoli in tanti bei film forse gli manca il ruolo della vita, ha vinto l’oscar con Syriana ma sinceramente non è un film che ricordo facilmente figuriamoci il suo ruolo e personalmente ricordo meglio altri suoi ruoli…come regista invece credo il suo apice l’abbia raggiunto con Good night and good luck anche se il mio preferito tra i film diretti da lui è quello d’esordio, Confessioni di una mente pericolosa. Insomma la carriera da regista di Clooney per come era iniziata sembrava dovesse indirizzarlo verso una serie di grandi successi, per carità la maggior parte dei suoi film mi sono piaciuti ma nessuno di questi mi ha particolarmente entusiasmato da parlarne molto dopo o addirittura consigliarlo ad altri…gli ultimi due film usciti su Prime video sono due bei film ma sono usciti quasi nel completo anonimato e uno di questi l’ho visto recentemente “Erano ragazzi in barca”. Questo è il secondo film di Clooney a tema sportivo dopo In amore niente regole ma a differenza di quel film che era semplicemente ispirato a fatti reali, Erano ragazzi in barca è un vero biopic sulla squadra di canottaggio che partecipò alle olimpiadi di Berlino del 1936. Questa tipologia di film ha sempre avuto effetto su di me, queste storie di riscatto sociale attraverso lo sport soprattutto durante il periodo della grande depressione come Cinderella Man e Seabiscuit per citarne qualcuno in cui per certi versi lo sport diventa aggregatore di speranze, in cui la gente cerca un modo per evadere dalla disperazione. Purtroppo nel film di Clooney il contesto sociale è solo parte del background del protagonista che si trova a confrontarsi in una realtà non sua…e il film perde cosi molta della sua carica emotiva diventando ben presto una semplice cronaca di un evento e la sfida non è più contro il destino avverso ma è una lotta contro le aspettative, una scommessa vinta. Gli ingredienti giusti per tirare fuori un bel film “motivazionale” c’erano ma il film va avanti raccontando una storia dimenticandosi di far appassionare lo spettatore…Eravamo ragazzi in barca è un bel film, come ce ne sono tanti. Peccato perché amo questo tipo di storie.

IT COMES AT NIGHT (2017), directed by Trey Edward Shults, starring Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. It Comes at Night demonstrates clear technical prowess, but its narrative does tread some familiar territory. 7.5/10 ⚠️ SPOILERS BEGIN BELOW ⚠️ Visually, It Comes at Night does some truly interesting stuff. The use of the pitch black during the nighttime sequences is half the horror. The way the white of the flashlights and lamps pierces the darkness is beautifully terrifying. The changing of the aspect ratio was another really smart decision that contributed to the tension. A lot of the plot can feel somewhat played out. It puts out characters in, while tense, fairly cliché apocalypse situations. Additionally, “dream” sequences hold a strange place in the narrative, as depending on how you view them, they hold a different amount of weight (I’ve seen some people consider them actual flashbacks). The drama is where this film shines. The way emotion unravels is compelling, supported undoubtedly by the performances.
THE GREEN KNIGHT (English) - A fantastic folklore adventure! I had more expectations on this because of A24 and Dev Patel & it reached almost all of them! It could have been faster but it took its time to establish each and every scene and character! The mysterious adventure to the green chapel, the introspection of the hero & the game played by the forest witches were brilliantly executed! Dev Patel and Alicia Vikander were fantastic in their roles! I loved Alicia Vikander and missed seeing her in a movie for so so long! I did not see Tomb raider and do not remember seeing her in any of the other recent movies! Loved the cinematography and the production design! Barry keoghan and Joel Edgerton were also there for small parts and they did well! Quick pencil drawing! Not perfect at all but wanted to draw something really quick and I chose the Conlon brothers from the movie Warrior (2011). I watched this movie with my little brother every evening after wrestling practice during my last year in high school. We both loved the story and of course the MMA scenes! I guess we could understand Tommy, Brendan, and their dad Paddy. Some similarities in the characters stories and ours… I wonder if we haven’t forgiven would we be like these brothers? All I can say is God is good and made a way for us to choose a right path 🙏 It’s a story about forgiveness and overcoming obstacles/trauma. Una vicenda che sembra adattarsi alla perfezione al cinema classico di George Clooney che, da regista, mantiene una sua coerenza nella scelta dei temi e nella prospettiva da cui guardare al suo Paese. Il film è quindi tutto giocato sulla costruzione di quel miracolo sportivo, sulla retorica di una nazione che offre a chiunque un’opportunità, anche a chi nasce povero e deve conquistarsi un posto nel mondo con caparbietà. Le emozioni non mancano ma più per il ricordo dell’impresa che per la qualità della messa in scena. La regia di Clooney appare infatti pigra, indolente, incapace di trovare il vero fuoco narrativo e di scavare nelle motivazioni dei personaggi.
