ARGYLLE 🌟🌟🌟 Some will say it’s cheesy, some will say it’s lame, and some will say “what the hell was with #henrycavill and that haircut!?! I was looking for a movie to say goodbye to summer to (NO. Say it ain’t so🥺😩😢) and ended up rewatching The Way Way Back…Adorable! It tells the story of a 14 year old boy, Duncan who goes away for the summer with his mom (Toni Collette) and her jerk boyfriend (Steve Carrell—who plays SUCH a good ahole btw). Duncan has a hard time fitting in until he befriends the carefree manager of a water park, Owen (Sam Rockwell). Owen helps Duncan to come out of his shell. He gives Duncan a job and with that, Duncan gains purpose, friendships and confidence. It’s such a cute coming of age story that made me laugh and tear up a bit. It’s hard to explain what you can get out of this movie as an adult. 'Jojo Rabbit' review • RATING: 4.5/5⭐ • Hilarious but with the right amount of hard hitting emotion and a great dose of satire comedy commanded by one of the most exciting filmmakers working today and lead by an absolutely amazing child performance makes Jojo Rabbit one of the best original films of the year. Before I went into this, I was a little worried about what I might experience, I was thinking back to another satire I watched a few months back, The Death Of Stalin, which didn't particularly have a great effect on me but let's be honest, would I ever doubt Taika and the stunning cast he brings to the table. Not at all. And this made Jojo Rabbit such a great film. World War 2 isn't far from ending, the Nazi's have rein and are beginning to train new recruits to join the army, a bunch of kids from a town go to a weekend camp for a bit of training, one boy Jojo thinks he's gonna be the next big thing but is a bit scared, has something holding him back, but finds comfort in his imaginary friend, Hitler. As you'd expect this is where most of the films comedy comes from and again confirms my theory that every character Waititi writes is him and everyone plays him, still, absolutely hilarious though. Boasting a great ensemble, sometimes it can be hard to give each star their moment, and this film successfully gives them multiple! Rockwell again plays a drunk racist (love it), ScarJo is making a big impression in the indie film industry and McKenzie was just great again all lead by young RGD who you laughed with and cried with. The balance of humor, emotion and the war was all done strongly, moments held long enough to have effect, Hitler pops into frame and it makes you chuckle then the fight at the end leading to a strong finale, albeit an expected one. Which doesn't leave me with much to say regarding Jojo Rabbit, its great, with humour and heartfelt with a lasting effect, I'm glad I had the opportunity get this film in my 2019 list and not 2020!
The Best of Enemies is an expertly acted true story drama by Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell that is a solid watch from start to finish. The film is just one of the many films in recent years that has tackled the topic of race and racism in the United States in recent years. It tells it’s true story well, but as far as a film itself other films that have covered the same topic matter like BlackKklansman, The Help and Hidden Figures all were better films. However, this does not mean that this film was bad. I found myself thoroughly engaged for the entire film after having little expectations for it, and would recommend it instantly. But that is mainly thanks to Taraji P. Henson’s and Sam Rockwell’s excellent performances. Both of them have proven themselves over the year to be excellent actors, and this film gives them the right characters and writing to truly excel. Henson is wonderful as Ann Atwater, she is a force to be reckoned with and is captivating for every second she is on screen. Then in the opposite side of the story, Sam Rockwell is brilliant as C.P. Ellis, the leader of his town’s chapter of the KKK who is having a life crisis as everything he believes in is tested. They’re great individually, but watching Henson and Rockwell clash is just as excellent, I actually want to see a sequel following their characters after the conclusion of this story just to see more of their performances and their characters. The film has a heartwarming ending, as you would expect this genre to have, and the fact that is a true story helps restore faith in humanity and knowing that change is possible. Only if more stories like this could happen today instead of ones of hate. So while it’s not the most outstanding take on this topic matter in film history, The Best is Enemies is a great watch thanks to two incredible performances from Taraji P. "Seven Psychopaths" is a film I've recently revisited and now completely understand, after some years of digesting. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh ("In Bruges" and the forthcoming "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"), "Seven Psychopaths" is what we would have gotten had Quentin Tarrantino directed "Adaptation." It's a film about the creative genius, the origin of it, and the people who unintentionally conjure it out of us so that the end result is either a finished piece of art or a finished POS. Becoming a staple for all three of McDonagh's films is violence and how inevitable it is for meaning to resound. Often our stories don't truly begin until we've lost something, and in this case that lost thing is a screenwriter's focus, alongside a ruthless gangster's Shih Tzu. Both incidents catapult the narrative here into bizarre, uncharted and charted territory that includes a cast of vibrant, psychologically scarred characters that are impossibly intriguing. Christopher Walken, the king of weird, might give his best, most memorable performance in decades here and it bothers me to no end that it wasn't recognized by the academy back in 2012, when the film was released. Sam Rockwell is also a knock out in a performance that combines his murderous Wild Bill character from "The Green Mile" and professional con man from "Matchstick Men." And just as he did in "In Bruges," McDonagh pulls an effective comedian out of Colin Farrell, who is entertainingly disturbed by the characters his author surrounds him with in this movie. Funny and ingenious, gorey and compelling, "Seven Psychopaths" contains the sort of content that unveils brilliance after multiple viewings, raising this seven to ten.
