The alphabetically-derived timing of this entry in my Sunday Soundtrack series couldn’t be more fortuitous, what with the imminent release of the biopic ‘Back to Black’ here in the States a month after it opened in the UK. I’ll see the flick no matter what, though thus far it’s received middling reviews. Can’t say that surprises me: celluloid embodiments always run the risk of being little more than mimicry without much substance. The more singular the subject, the tougher the task — and while Amy Winehouse was many things, most of them exceptional, a cruel few debilitating and deadly, she was above all one-of-a-kind. Which is why even a brilliant film with a performance on the level of Rami Malek’s extraordinary emulation of Freddie Mercury still wouldn’t measure up to the real thing. Especially when there’s the Oscar/BAFTA/Grammy-winning documentary ‘Amy’ waiting to be watched again and again. Assuming you can bear the heartbreak, of course. I barely can. Took a second look when it initially arrived on DVD after seeing Asif Kapadia’s chronological collage theatrically. That viewing tore me up too. I haven’t returned to it since. Doesn’t that contradict my implication that this will remain the superior cinematic experience? Not really. The way to more deeply appreciate Amy is to retrace her doomed travails while simultaneously reconsidering the meaning behind her words — impassioned pleas, veiled anguish and all. Naturally the movie does a better job of encapsulating that than the soundtrack. But given the relative scarcity of her recordings, I’m as grateful for this set’s compelling demos and captivating live cuts as I am the essential ‘At the BBC’ collection. Memories from when I actually laid eyes on her, especially Coachella 2007, are still vivid … yet fading. This is one of my favorite movies & soundtracks from the past 10-15 years. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a hilarious satire of the recent promotional vanity project disguised as a real documentary phenomena. And the songs are catchy as hell. The 1986 movie “The color of money” is my #soundtracksunday offering today and is the follow up to the 1961 Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason classic “The Hustler”. This time Fast Eddie is the grizzled vet trying to mentor a young and talented Tom Cruise. The movie is directed by Martin Scorsese and lots of star power and did OK at the box office but just kinda fell flat IMO. The soundtrack is a good one but kinda a compilation a bit too. The big song was Eric Clapton’s “It’s in the way that you use it” which was co written by Robbie Robertson (The Band) and features Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) on piano. It’s pretty standard fair mid 80s Eric Clapton and that’s good or bad depending on how you look at it I suppose. Those solos were really good but also kinda typical for this point of his career. One weird thing about the song is that it starts right away with the chorus which I always thought was a bit odd. @martin.for.the.record what do you think about this song? I'm celebrating the release of Reservoir Dogs this weekend! The movie was released in Norway on April 29, 1993. Both the movie and soundtrack are amazing and instant classics! Quentin Tarantino is a master at creating a perfect soundtrack. In fact, the music almost becomes a character in the movie itself. There is the infamous scene in Reservoir Dogs where Mr. Blonde cuts off the cop's ear while struttin' to Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle With You". It’s a killer whale #SoundtrackSunday Orca (also known as Orca: The Killer Whale) is a 1977 American thriller film directed by Michael Anderson and produced by Dino De Laurentiis, with a #filmscore by Ennio Morricone. Basically a male orca is tracking down and getting revenge on a fishing boat and its captain for killing the whale’s pregnant mate and their unborn calf. It did ok at the box office but got criticized for being a Jaws rip off, from which it certainly drew inspiration. I was 10 when it came out and didn’t see it in theaters, but always thought the theme music was so sad. I somehow missed seeing this album on Record Store Day, but went back to @blockstreetrecords and grabbed it when they posted they still had it. This is the first real vinyl release in the US of this soundtrack. It had a Japanese vinyl pressing in 1977 and a CD reissue in the 1990s. Very happy to have it in my collection…. Now I must find the paperback novel that @thevinylwhores posted with their copy last week! . Not too long ago, I told my friends: "Man, I'd love to hear and see the music of Elden Ring being performed live by an orchestra!" Now they did it and it was the definition of epic! 🤩🤟🫶 The Royal Albert Hall was the fitting venue for something of this grandeur and the place was packed! And the performance was nothing short of spectacular! The choir and orchestra gave it their all and basically played through the main journey with all the shardbearing bosses and their music. But even the level music got its shine like Limgrave, Altus Plateau or Leyndell. Sadly they couldn't fit in everything (no Lichdragon Fortissax😭). An odd choice was also having the ingame sound effects at times on with the video footage, which took away a bit from the music, as it competed with it on the acoustic side of things. But overall this was great and worth the travel! El film es una película biográfica dirigida por Steve Rash que cuenta la vida y carrera del músico de rock and roll Buddy Holly. Cuenta con una partitura musical ganadora del Premio de la Academia, adaptada por Joe Renzetti y la Interpretación Principal nominada al Oscar de Gary Busey. La película a su vez ganó Mejor Sonido en los Premios Oscar. Los actores del film cantaron y tocaron sus propios instrumentos, con el guitarrista Jerry Zaremba sobregrabando las partes de guitarra. Gary Busey, en particular, se destacó por grabar la banda sonora en vivo y por perder una cantidad considerable de peso para interpretar a Holly. Según la biografía de Busey, perdió 32 libras para parecerse más a Holly, quien pesaba 146 libras en el momento de su muerte. Another visit to Hans Zimmer for @soundtracksunday. I've always loved Batman - although not the George Clooney version! - and when Batman Begins arrived from Christopher Nolan, it was magical. The movie was a great origins story for the superhero and the beginning of an incredible run between the director and composer. The Dark Knight Rises marked the end of the trilogy and Zimmer increased the drama and tension of his score, resulting in an incredibly fraught soundtrack which has you on edge throughout.
