Friday Roger Corman passed away at age 98. Corman was well known as a director and producer of inexpensive horror and science fiction “shock” films for several decades, including several notable adaptations of Edgar Allen Poe stories featuring Vincent Price. Corman followed his father’s wishes in pursuing a degree in engineering, but upon graduation only lasted three days in a job as engineer before taking an entry level job working as a messenger boy for a Hollywood studio. Corman’s reputation was for making inexpensive films that never lost money, but he also served as a sort of patron of the industry. Many actors (like Jack Nicholson) and directors (like Francis Ford Coppola and Ron Howard) got their first paying work and useful training working for Corman. I can sit here and list off all the people who got their first breaks through him, both directly and indirectly, or I can talk about how New Hollywood came through his little workshops; but there's more to him than that. He was a great director, and a pinnacle of independent filmmaking. He worked outside of the system, and shaped it to his own specifications. From his Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, to the epicness of "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre", to his social commentary of "The Intruder", and to his fast-paced goofy movies like "Little Shop of Horrors", he knew how to tell a good story. While inevitable because of his age, the passing of the legend that was @rogercorman still hurts. He was the producer or director of some of the first movies I ever saw. With each new filmmaker or actor I became a fan of, the more I learned of the part he played in giving them their start. A small celebration honoring him was the first actual “Hollywood” function I ever attended. Watching the amount of people crediting him with their success and seeing how much he meant to them, I realized just what a huge impact he had on modern film. We all have the ability to encourage, impact and inspire those around us, even at the smallest level. "The external world could take care of itself." So says Prince Prospero as he takes his 1000 favorite people to hide while the 'Red Death' sweeps through his country and mercilessly kills his loyal subjects. The plague is of no concern to them as they enjoy their shelter: "The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure. There were buffoons, there were improvisators, there were ballet dancers, there were musicians, there was Beauty, there was wine. All these and security were within. Without was the 'Red Death'." Edgar Allen Poe published The Masque of the Red Death in 1842. What a flair he had for fiction. Our leaders always have our best interests at heart. Surely no U.S. senator would flee to Cancun while his constituents dealt with massive loss of power and heat during one of the worst winter storm's in the history of that state. Surely a U.S. governor wouldn't try and save money by switching a water supply source to untested and, ultimately unsafe and poisonous, river water. Certainly an elected official wouldn't do that, and especially not to a predominately impoverished, black community. That would be criminal. Surely city officials would never sell their parking meters to a private equity firm in a 75 year, 1.15 billion dollar contract, thus allowing said city to be on the very short list of most expensive cities to park your car. That would be comically absurd. EAP was a #sillygoose thinking up a story so funny. This was my first time reading The Masque of Red Death and it has immediately, as of now, become my favorite Poe story. You'll have to read it to find out how these silly geese fared. 🖤🩶Nevermore🩶🖤 A wonderful macabre evening of amazing performances and delicious libations (the mocktails in my case were sublime), celebrating the work of the great Edgar Allan Poe at the @edgarallanpoespeakeasy tonight! I have always been a fan of his work. I have fond memories of the Simpsons episode of The Raven even as a kid. Poe became even more so intertwined with my life when the closest location for my satellite interview for RVC @royalvetcollege was in Philadelphia. So of course, while there, my dad and I went to the Poe house where some of his greatest works were written. There is a lovely photo of us in front of a Raven statue in the back of the house. Well, that interview was a success and fast forward to my first few days ever in London, where anxiety and excitement and fear were overwhelming. I was about to move across the world and start vet school. My dad came with and just before orientation, we did some sightseeing, including the Tower of London. The famous ravens made me realize this was going to be my second home. One of the ravens landed on me on the bench and pecked at my jacket and shoe laces, one of the most amazing experiences of my life as the tend to keep to themselves and you are not to touch them. Needless to say, ravens have been a beautiful part of my veterinary journey, and it started because of Poe. If you go to the Fever app, the show is still in South Bend for till Saturday! Whilst the Red Death plague ravages the countryside, Prince Prospero offers refuge in his castle to the local nobility. He’s also taken into his castle a young woman, Francesca, from the local village where the plague began. While the aristocracy play their silly games, Propero introduces Francesca to his world - which includes Satan worship. At the masked ball he hosts for his guests, Prospero sees someone dressed all in red even though he had forbidden anyone to wear that color. Prospero will soon face his greatest fears. “Why should you be afraid to die? Your soul has been dead for a long time.” If we were still knee deep in Covid pandemic times. I’d totally be up for a locked in party with Vincent Price and his satanic upper class cult. Considered the best movie of Roger Corman’s Poe anthology. We have what seems like two classic macabre tales in one: Masque of the Red Death with a hint of Hop Frog The colours are gorgeous channeling the very best of any Hammer production going around at that time. And the visuals… as ravishing as Rick Rude himself! TMOTRD brings you demonic ravens, inverted crosses and a psychedelic masquerade cult to name but a few gothic treats. “It’s time for a new dance to begin... the Dance of Death!” Prospero is brought by Vincent Price in all his ghoulish splendour. Although not quite Witchfinder evil, he certainly brings plenty of twitchy moustaches and arched eyebrows. Beautiful and horrifying. “And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.” 7.5 ebony clocks out of 10.
