Skeletons in the Closet (2024) is an unimpressive horror film with an evil spirit that failed to create scares and tension. The plot is filled with soap drama clichés, the dialogue is poor, and the main characters repeatedly make bad decisions, which are painful to watch. Despite a cast that included Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Louis Mandylor, and Udo Kier, the film still managed to miss the mark. I was even more disappointed that the finale was evident before it concluded. Unfortunately, all these incidents are becoming more and more common for director Asif Akbar, whose films continually lack any form of joy, depth and quality. BLADE. A wise man (for his age) once said, “We rarely have control over the movies that shape us.” This statement helped me to re-evaluate my position on Blade, albeit post-discussionally. Being much older, Blade wasn’t quite seminal for me like it was for Millenials, but I think Iris and I recognize its place in late-90s cinema and popular culture. Blade either helped define the post-goth/glam techno-disaffectation of the time, or it nestled right into it like internet trolls did with World of Warcraft. Blade is remembered by the comic book set, by the movie bros, and by the suckheads as a shiny new thing in American movies, and we regarded it well enough to make it the final main channel selection of Wesley Month here at Or Whatever Movies. They plan to rob the thieves, but things don’t go exactly as planned due to mistrust between the thieves. This meticulous film explores the stories of the thieves and suspended police officers and their fates. Protagonists whom are morally grey though we can really feel for their causes. Heavily reminiscent of movies like: Good, Bad, & the Ugly; Heat; and Pulp Fiction. Ridgeman and Henry both having struggling families who desperately need the money to stabilize their lives. While Vogelmann’s fleet of robbers being just pure ruthlessly evil, driven by their unquenchable greed. Stopping at nothing to get what they want. They’re villains you just love to hate. Not for the actor’s performances but how they nastily are portrayed. Killing for the sake of killing bystanders when needed despite how rough their lives. The dialogue is sharp and genius, often hilarious sometimes. I love the chemistry between Brett and Anthony. It really feels like they’ve been lifelong friends. The cinematography is gritty and often dusky. It fits well with the corrupt city atmosphere. It’s almost three hours but the pacing was superb. 10/10

Vince Vaughn no es el mejor actor, ni el más icónico, ni siquiera uno tan recordado. Sin embargo, una vez lo conoces, jamás lo olvidas. Algo que sí paso con su carrera, casi desapareciendo, excepto por papeles esporádicos que lo condujeron a uno de sus papeles en esta película infravalorada del 2017. Brawl in cell block 99: Bradley Thomas (Vince Vaugh) es un ex boxeador que, después de perder su empleo, decide volverse una mula para un narcotraficante para darle una mejor vida para su esposa y futura hija, hasta que pasa algo que arruina todo y las pondrá en peligro. Entonces, Bradley deberá ver como salvar a su familia desde la cárcel. Dirigida y escrita por S. Craig Zahler, nos da una brutal película de criminales, haciendo un grandioso homenaje al cine de explotación de los años 70's. Si esperan una gran película, no es esta. Sin embargo, si les gusta el cine de explotación y serie B clásico, estoy seguro de que sí será genial y de hecho lo mejor. La narrativa retoma esos mundos brutales y despiadados del cine de los 70's, el cine de venganza, las películas de prisiones, con el género neo noir moderno. Con un protagonista estoico, con una presencia física, intimidante e imparable. Sin ser una persona brusca o ignorante, Vaughn construye un hombre listo y emocional, pero que sabe que el mundo es directo y cruel. Haciendo frente a todas estas injusticias de la mejor manera posible. Todo esto en un tono bien muy exagerado, los personajes pasando ser realistas a casi personajes propios. Sin embargo, eso no quita el realismo. Ya que la construcción de este mundo nos plantea de una gran forma las dinámicas de personajes, con el tono casi absurdo. En especial en las partes de peleas que la brutalidad escala de 0 a 1000 de un golpe. Puesto que una vez vamos entrando más y más a la parte de la prisión, menos importa la realidad. En especial con esa forma tan gore y a veces fantástica de plantear algunos conceptos. Aquí destaco la dirección que utiliza unos encuadres con angulares muy exagerados que distorsionan la visión de uno. (Continua abajo)

Just Watched Breaking the Waves (1996) @curzonfilm has me confused. How are you going to release such a beautiful boxset with so many films and still not include subtitles for dhh? I feel like at this point companies cannot claim ignorance, we all know people that are hard of hearing exist and watch movies. THE KINGDOM (1994) After spending all these years watching almost all of Lars von Trier’s movies, I somehow wasn’t able to find a way to watch the miniseries trilogy that he began way back in the 1990s, and so I was really happy to find a boxset containing the original broadcast versions of The Kingdom and The Kingdom II around a month ago. Across its four episodes, The Kingdom blends its medical drama setup and daytime TV-esque plotlines of office politics and workplace romances with heavy doses of paranormal horror and pitch-black comedy, and the result is as unpredictable and bizarre as it is riveting. The show swaps out von Trier’s usual overwhelming bleakness for a tone that is either eerie, otherworldly magical, and laugh-out-loud hilarious with its dry and often goofy sense of humor, and its consistency in balancing all of these moods without ever losing steam made The Kingdom end up being loads of fun, with the generational hauntings and mysterious underground societies being just as compelling as a hyped-up trip to Haiti. Lars von Trier has always been known for trying to innovate within the medium through restrictions, and even by those standards, The Kingdom feels quite different from his other works in terms of presentation. The Kingdom balances out Lars’ usual Dogme 95 sensibilities with steady, swerving tracking shots, but the intensely grainy images and sepia color palette greatly thicken the show’s unabashed absurdism, with the various dream sequences, supernatural sightings, and metaphysical occurrences being especially effective thanks to this. One of my favorite elements of The Kingdom also happens to be how Lars von Trier himself shows up in the end credits of every episode and thanks the viewer for sticking around, and that single choice gave even more personality to this already eccentric show. I had a blast with all four episodes of The Kingdom, and since this show ended with one of the most insane cliffhangers I’ve ever seen, I’m quite excited to see what The Kingdom II has in store for me. OVERALL RATING: 8/10
