Time to relax after a long day at work with my girlfriend and enjoy a horror movie at home for tonight! From 2018, "Hereditary"! I haven’t seen this movie since I saw it in theaters and when I originally watched the film, I was a little confused by what all happened in the film perhaps the second viewing will help me understand it a little better. This isn’t your typical type of horror film that’s for sure but then again that is what A24 usually does when they do horror movies. This will be Emily’s first time seeing the movie, so I’ll be very curious to see what she thinks of it, especially with a couple of those scenes that had the entire internet talking lol! The Usual Suspects {1995} ………………………………………………………………………………… A group of criminals are falsely accused of a crime. From the beginning, this movie had me hooked. Although it is a little slower paced in the beginning, it is well-worth the wait to be patient. The plot twist was insanely creative. When viewing the movie a second time there are small hints that clue people in to the truth. I understand those who think that this movie is a cliche or that the ending was obvious. If anything, it was more about the cinematography and the twists rather than trying to poke holes in it. The acting, especially Kevin Spacey’s, pulls you into the action. Every single person fits the outline of Keyser Soze which makes the movie all the more intriguing. The only person we are never allowed to see (Keyser Soze) is the character everyone and the entire movie itself revolves around. The director forces you to follow what seems to be a truthful lead only for you to fall victim to another trap. Every time you think you have the real perpetrator figured out, you’re proven wrong. I tracked down an original pressing of Thomas Dolby's score to Ken Russell's underrated 1986 masterpiece Gothic. This period horror film takes place on the night the Shelleys spent at Byron's Swiss villa which ultimately inspired Mary to write Frankenstein. The dinner guests all drink their weight in laudanum and proceed to play an occult game in which they conjur up their deepest, darkest fears. They then spend the rest of the movie being chased through the mansion by their personal demons, and no one (least of all the audience) has any idea what's real and what's not. It's brilliant, stupid, gorgeous and ridiculously over-the-top. But hey, that's the Romantics for you. And even more surprisingly, nothing was ever spoiled for me. Yet, I knew the ending from the very beginning. I’ve seen tons of movies and read tons of books. Not much surprises me anymore and this was no exception. I believe this film was a product of its time and was very surprising to the audience in 1995. But not anymore. A shame, really. That said, Spacey was still pretty deserving of his Oscar. And I loved the music— it felt noir-ish with heavy cellos. And I knew many of the actors and they worked well together in an ensemble. But without the big reveal, it just seems a bit average to me. Frankie (Arquette) finds her world torn asunder when a myriad of miracles begin to befall her and the results are life-changing to say the least. But is this the real thing or an elaborate hoax of some sort? That’s exactly what one of the most powerful religious organizations in the world want to find out, so they send one (Byrne) of their own to do some investigating into the validity of the seemingly impossible occurrences. Filmmaker Rupert Wainwright (The Fog 2005) takes the “possession” flick and gives it a nifty twist with his entry into the ever-expanding catalogue of films dealing with this particular subject matter. Catholic iconography, heavy-handed imagery, drippy backdrops, and all the tried and trusted tropes associated with this specific subgenre appear in this highly entertaining motion picture that’s equal parts ‘90s time capsule and straight up shocker. Miller’s Crossing (1990) 👍 This absolutely perfect neo-noir gangster flick is the 3rd Coen brothers collaboration. The storyline is so sharp and well structured that I was left marveling at the Coens once again 👏 Tom (Gabriel Byrne) is mobster Leo’s (Albert Finney) right hand man. Leo has the mayor and police chief of an unnamed city in his back pocket during Prohibition 🥃 Leo extends protection to his moll Verna’s (Marcia Gay Harden) brother Bernie (John Turturro) who is skimming off Caspar (Jon Polito), Leo’s gang rival, despite Caspar’s request that Leo take Bernie out as a matter of “ethics.” [Caspar is such a wonderfully quirky Coen brothers character]. Speaking of ethics, Verna is also two-timing Leo with Tom [such a convincing performance by Harden btw]. Spoiler: After a fallout of sorts, Tom winds up going to Caspar for work. Caspar’s first assignment is for Tom to execute Bernie in a wooded area called Miller’s Crossing. Tom misleads Caspar’s men into thinking he really shoots Bernie - they heard the shots but hadn’t witnessed the execution. Tom tells Bernie to get out of town, but he doesn’t, putting Tom in a tricky position where his disloyalty to Caspar could be revealed at any moment 🫣 Tom next tries to drive a wedge between Caspar and his sidekick, the Dane (J.E. Freeman). At one point, the Dane and his men take Tom back to Miller’s Crossing to verify that Bernie’s body is there. The suspense in this scene is unparalleled; Tom is sweating bullets because he knows no corpse will be found and that he’ll be killed next. But wait! Whose body is this they find then with their face shot off? 😱 The precision mental chess moves in this film continue in a similar vein leaving the nail-biting viewer to wonder who’s outsmarting whom. Pero de qué trata? la pérdida, el trauma que origina una pérdida, las consecuencias del trauma sufrido tras una pérdida. Los últimos minutos son frenéticos, de locos.
