The beach car park and public toilets at Achmelvich are currently closed for improvement works. The car park is likely to reopen in late spring and the toilets are likely to reopen at the end of August. Local landowners have made available some alternative parking and temporary toilet facilities while the improvements are underway. This is just at the turning circle before the cattle grid as you drive into Achmelvich. Visitors should look out for the signage. In Lochinver, work has started on the public toilets which will be closed until the end of May. So the stress of retirement has taken its toll and old age has kicked in with a diagnosis of stomach ulcers. Having done a bit of research I've decided to treat myself to the bee friendly method of repair. The two lots of heather honey (not as nice as mine 🫣) were gifts from Richard and Paul up west, thank you both. Despite being close to each other their honey are very different in flavour. With its pristine sand and crystal clear water, the bay at Achmelvich is understandably famous as one of the most beautiful in Scotland. This was taken on a winter morning, where even under a heavy grey sky the colour of the water was breathtaking - a vivid turquoise many people would be more likely to associate with tropical locales. I love the contrast between a stormy sky and the colours of a beach like this – that and the quiet of the beach in winter gave a mysterious, dreamlike quality to the place. With great natural beauty comes responsibility - please remember if visiting Achmelvich that this place is also part of a community where people live and work. These photos were taken on a quiet February day when the beach was empty, but during the high season the popularity of places like this on the NC500 route can sometimes cause difficulty for locals, with the road in becoming congested and people not parking in designated areas. With its precious dunes and machair, Achmelvich is also a rare and delicate ecosystem supporting many insect and plant species – while beautiful to see, it is vital to respect this and do nothing that will pollute or damage it. The following planned improvements works are ongoing in Achmelvich and Lochinver, please respect and adhere to the signed guidance: ❗️Access to Achmelvich Beach Car Park and toilets ❗️️ The beach car park and public toilets at Achmelvich are currently closed for planned improvements. The car park is likely to reopen in late spring and the toilets are likely to reopen at the end of August. Local landowners have made available some alternative parking while the improvements are underway and this will be clearly signposted for visitors. ❗️Temporary closure of Lochinver toilets ❗️ In Lochinver, work will soon be commencing on Lochinver public toilets which will be closed until the end of May. The nearest available toilets will be at Clachtoll and temporarily at the Assynt Leisure Centre till the Lochinver toilets reopen.
