Another photographic example of why I love Scotland. . From Visit Scotland: Achnahaird Beach is a lovely crescent of sand in Wester Ross that is considered one of Scotland’s best beaches. The bay at Achnahaird is a north westerly facing inlet of cream white sand and a tide that flows up and down. Easily reached from the road via Altandhu and Achiltibuie, it is like all the coastline up here relatively unvisited and always peaceful. . Lying north of Ullapool, the beach is reached by a road two miles past Achiltibuie. From there, it is a short walk to grass hillocks that back the sand and rock pools. . There are lovely views of Stac Polly and other neighbouring mountains from the beach and most of the surrounding area is Inverpolly Nature Reserve. View Up The Pass of The Cattle ( Bealach na Bà) 626m. It was SO windy. We saw a cyclist attempting to make a phone call. At the top we stopped. A woman asked had we seen a cyclist. It was her husband. He had been blown off his bike and could not remount as it was too steep and too windy. Are you a Geordie I asked. Turns out when we met them again by chance in Applecross she disclosed that she came from the same village as my father and her husband was a Scouser like my mother. Day 9 of our NC500 road trip adventure ... part 1 ... waking up after spending the night at Applecross campsite (highly recommended) we got out on the road, letting the deer family across safely. Today we were headed for what we had both been looking forward to this whole trip the drive along the iconic Bealach Na Ba ... safe to say it did not disappoint. We reached the viewpoint and hopped out the van to take in the views. It was pretty darn windy but it felt great to have the cobwebs blasted out 😅 the views as we continued on the drive down the single track road between the mountains were blinking fantastic! An absolute highlight of our trip. The wee winding road home. After more than 3 weeks away, visiting family in France and England, we have arrived back in South Erradale. It has been a lovely long trip away - into the deep, rich spring of the French countryside and the more slowly unfurling spring of Lancashire and Cheshire. Along the last few miles of the narrow, potholed, twisting, coast-hugging road great squalls came running to greet us Ah! Spring in the NW Highlands! An afternoon of hard work but reward! Got my pea frames built, the blossom is out on my dwarf fruit trees, I've sorted my tubs out and worked out what needs to be done to fix those that aren't thriving, and I got 3 out of 4 "tattie towers" started in some old tyres that were lying about the place. Rio and his tiny cousin, Dakota the Jack Russell, did excellent work as quality checkers on my seed tatties (some of which are my own from last year!). The Highlander did great work on the dry stone wall we're building to extend out the garden area, and 2 other members of Team Strutt (not pictured as they were too far away!) did a great job of working on the bottom perimeter fence and started clearing out the old stable in the back field. I'm aching, tired and slightly sunburnt (it was blooming strong at times today!) AND.. I stink, badly, because I accidentally tipped a load of old tattie tyre water on myself, but I've lit the fire for a bath, and I have some Nick Drake on the speakers and a wee rum in hand so I'm very, very happy with what an excellent day this has been. Team work in action, looking forward and planning and positivity abound! I may still be nursing a slight hangover - the whisky was free flowing and the champagne was exceptional - but oh what a night in the Highlands. Our brilliant and generous host brought together three groups of fishermen who for decades have shared a love of the same place, but have never met. Wester Ross is - in my opinion - one of the most underrated parts of Scotland for your intimate elopement. These days, the Isle of Skye, Glen Coe, and the City of Edinburgh are the most popular and busiest elopement locations in Scotland. I worked on the Isle of Skye this Wednesday, and according to the local register office there were another 5 legal elopements on Skye that day. Yes, that's right - six elopements in a single day on Skye. It's crazy isn't it? So, if you prefer a private, intimate ceremony and do not want to bump into other married couples on the hillside, consider other locations in Scotland. Just like A. & E. they eloped in the North-West of Scotland on a beautiful autumn day with no sign of other people or tourists.
