Yesterday was a legume kinda day, and a strange thing happened to me. I had my headphones with me and an audiobook ready.. but I didn't listen to it.. or anything else for that matter. So that's a first. By way of a little context, I am an obsessive multi-tasker. If I don't have something in my ears, I feel like I'm wasting time or missing opportunities. I found a new obsession when traveling in south of Europe - balcony gardens . My recent holiday has brought me some serious garden jealousy. What a difference 10 months can make! I am so proud of all the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears that have gone into my allotment. #allotment progress. Brambles cut down and now raked up into a pile so I can see what needs dug out - the big crowns sticking out are what I’ll pull out. New growth has been sprayed with SBK - I initially didn’t want to go the weed killer route but the brambles are so numerous and popping up everywhere that it feels necessary. 2 mystery trees were found under the brambles along with some mystery currant bushes. We cut the brambles down 2 weeks ago and the plants are looking much healthier already. Part 2 - Project Allotment Tunnel The tunnel has a roof! Which I think qualifies it as a tunnel. 🤔 An allotment neighbour donated the top of a couple old rusty arches they were taking to the tip. These created a framework to hold the bamboo and willow pieces creating the roof. We've planted pink tangine sweetpeas so far. Still deciding what else to attempt to grow. The hope is it will create more vertical growing space, and also a shaded spot for the kids to hang on hot summer days. ☀️ Runner beans? Mini cucumbers? Cucumber melons? Climbing french beans? Not sure it's strong enough to hold pumpkins. 😬 Ooh the possibilities! Thinking of productive ways to use all available space .. Found this moulded polystyrene in a skip in the garden centre. Filled with aquatic compost and made lots of holes in the bottom to allow water in & root growth. Planted up with watercress and floated in my largest waterbutt - if my cunning plan works, in a couple of months this'll be a bushy floating raft of cut & come again watercress for the summer. I went to check in on the allotment today. You may have noticed a distinct lack of updates these last few months, and no, it's not because I've given up. The pretty much constant rain since December has put a damper (🤭) on things though: it's quite tricky digging things up when all the earth is stuck together and I suspect walking over it whilst it's so wet isn't going to do the soil structure any favours. Anyway, on todays visit I found hidden in one little corner, these hopeful little rhubarb sprouts! This made me VERY happy as rhubarb was one of the things I was particularly excited about growing (/eating). I'm hoping that the shrivelled looking leaves are just the after effects of the weekends snow and it will bounce back. Then I spotted some rhubarb in a much more advanced stage of growth in the neighbouring plot so that was a little disheartening.. Maybe I should put a pot on mine, or is it too late in the year to do that? Day 4 of the polytunnel build! My uncle came to lend a hand (and feet as pictured). The first job was supposed to be drilling in all the "self-drilling screws" which didn't quite live up to thier name sake. We figured out that the issue was our cheap drills and drill bits; fine for woodwork but not for drilling into good quality metal. So we bought those, and built a "dummy door" and real door while we waited for it to charge. After that, the drilling was a doddle with the new drill! Hoping to get it all finished next Saturday. We at last finished our bug hotel today... it was so lovely to be out in the sun doing something practical after all the wind & rain recently. The web is awash with bug hotel tutorials, but I found many had conflicting info & I got so confused about height, materials, layers etc I stopped reading most of them & just went with what seemed to make most sense. I've tried to separate the 'bee' bit from the other storeys and made sure it's in some shade, whilst facing south (ish) so it gets some sun for the bees. I've avoided plastic, used bits of an old pallet (non chemically treated one) for the hotel frame, recycled bits & bobs such as old wood, tiles, ceramic saucers & cut up wood from a pruned tree . I might add an arched roof at some point, so rain can run off easier. Planting some Comfrey seeds in a pot. Put in the Greenhouse for a few weeks. I'll do another pot start of March. Comfrey is a BRILLIANT plant, basically it's grow your own fertiliser. You can use it as mulch, or to bulk out potting compost. You can soak it in water to make a brilliant liquid fertiliser for spuds & toms ( but be warned, it this liquid form STINKS, so put a lid on your bucket !). I'll havest it a few times through the year to go onto the heap, as it's an excellent compost activator.
