Today’s events are dedicated to memories. If you take a look at the first two photos, they come from just over a year ago, when I earned my #doctorate from #drexel #drexeluniversity - of course #tinyman Snitches is with me wearing his own cap and gown. The little guy deserved it, as I’ll never forget my #anxiety before defending my #dissertation being sky high. No matter that it was #virtual - I was still very #nervous - however, the moment Snitches sat on my lap, he did throughout about 90% of my #defense - my anxiety went down considerably. What a great memory. This beauty of our #angels #angelsinfur - that same Angel in fur helped me to have a #desire to #live - and desire to continue on. Of course my family and friends and especially Shannah my #wife did (we’ll talk more about her later), but for almost two months everyday I “lived” looking forward to the night, with the hope I wouldn’t wake up. But that little five pounds of #infiniteglory #infinite #glory #chihuahua with his furry siblings helped make what could have been an incredibly tragic memory, one of #hope - I legitimately owe those pups my life. Some of you may wonder how, but when I began to have #suicidalideations #suicideideation I thought of my wife, and my pups and their reaction to my death. I also thought of my parents and their reaction, especially following the recent death of their other son. I had to stay strong. It was not easy. But when I was weakest, the #love I felt from those closest to me gave me that desire to live. And that love includes the five pound #chihuahua that you see in the photo with me. I may joke around about him, but he truly was my #salvation - his #unconditionallove - along with the other furry angels and my family-allowed this memory of #graduation to be just one of my good ones, as opposed to the final good memory. Another day down! Just over four miles. Today I’m representing one of the greatest organizations available at some high schools - that of #aevidum - this amazing organization supports students to let them know that “they got your back.” It is a great #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness organization that looks to educate and support the local high school population. It sprung forth when a student at Cocalico High School died by suicide. That student, like most people who die by #suicide don’t really want to die, but they find it impossible to #live with the pain they feel in their brains. I get it. You’re looking at someone who has wrestled with two terrible bouts with #depression and had #suicidalideations - it’s because I became a puppet to the depression. However, thanks to my #relationshipwithgod #God and His #friends the #saints that I learned about, as well as #angelsinfur that I call my pups and cat, trust me, that #unconditionallove they give is strong. As well as the unconditional love from my #wife Shannah, my parents, niece, and other family and friends, got me through hell. I #humbly say this because this second bout with depression, following the death of my brother and friend Bob, gave me a new purpose. To #educate the world and #eradicate #endthestigma and put a face on depression, anxiety and #mentalillness in general. Let’s stop sweeping deaths by suicide under the carpet, educate our communities and SAVE lives! Remember you are loved, you are cared for, you are worth the help you need to feel better. I have FUREVER loved dogs. Big, small, smooth or fluffy. They are angels in fur. I wish they all lived forever. They have enriched my life right from the beginning. I was an only child. I had no brothers or sisters to play with- so I made the dogs play with me. Luckily I have never met a dog yet who does not love to please you!!! I honestly never thought I could love a cat this much, I am a dog person. Nala came to me during my spine surgery recovery of which I am still currently in. She has been by my side through tears and days in bed due to pain. She basically ‘lived’ on my bed next to me and still does whether I am having a bad pain day or not. She snuggles up to me every night even when I’m at the edge of the bed she finds a way to be as close to me as possible . She often lays her paw on my face and stares at me when she knows it’s a bad day, and when I leave, most days she waits at the front door for me. Nala saved my life. She eases my pain and makes me smile on days I can’t even fake a smile. She has helped me ‘hang on’ for months and months, and I believe she has been and is a large component in my improvement post surgery. She is my baby and she deserves the best . My dog Neptune … same. He is my best buddy and always lays his head on my lap on not so great days and he seems to always know when I need compassion or a smile. He is just too big to be up on my bed all the time though often both he and Nala with their hairy fluffy selves are sleeping next to me in my bed lmao. If you are a chronic pain sufferer, if you frequently have ‘bed’ days or weeks, let God or the Universe direct you to a wonderful furry friend And give them all the love and respect and compassion you have. Hell I don’t even like the word ‘pet’ anymore. They are my family and i treat them as such. Seems I loved Duke so much, that I’d pet him and hug him and roughhouse with him and literally ride him like a pony. I’m surprised I didn’t wear the poor fella’s fur clean off! Duke loved me unconditionally and patiently, just as Huckleberry does now during these happy days and as he did then through those sad days and even sadder nights when he first came to me and never strayed from me during my ex-wife’s affair and subsequent abandonment and divorce. Huck was always there for me, and he’s still always there for me; through joy and pain and sunshine and rain, every doggone day and night. You were right mom, Duke was a saint; a saint just like Jack was for all those many years, and a saint just like the lovable hound dog I named Huckleberry is to me today. And so it is written...figuratively; it says so right there on the prescription card I carry in my wallet, scripted for me by my Miami fibromyalgia specialist, Doctor Ference, proclaiming Huck as my official service dog. Four years ago today I met Olive. The tennis ball pic was the 1st pic I took of her, little did I know what a journey it was going to be 🤣 To say that she is a blessing is an understatement. She was my miracle. I had just lost my mom and my Izzy B 3 weeks before and she came along at a time when I needed her the most 🙏 It was a bit of a rough start learning how to deal with my sweet little termite, but I wouldn't change a second of it. (Holes in the walls.. the furniture.. the cords.. the shoes.. the car upholstery..... ) 🤔🤣 I am so thankful that I was at the right place at the right time. God knew I needed her, even when I didn't. Mum has always joked that I’m in the wrong profession. She reckons my talents lie with non-human souls. Our Doggo’s, Hazel and Douglas, are our friends that are family. But during lockdown, with the loss of normality, their role in my life is more important than even I could have ever imagined. Without fail an early doors ‘call of nature’ ensures sun rise is always part of my day. After meeting the Doggo’s necessities, we all trundle back up to bed with a cup of tea and indulge in a bit of a media scroll and book read. Whether leading a walk & talk session or I’m out just for fun, these relentless personal trainers ensure my boots get some mud on them everyday. If I’m out in the garden, feeding the birds, planting up bulbs and colour, or even just to put the rubbish out, my two loyal companions accompany me. When I’m taking someone through a meditation session, via a video call, they don’t see the right and left thigh warmers that are gently snoozing away. Yet, I feel their warming, steady, calming, presence. I’m under no illusion, I’m one of the lucky ones. Home is filled with six adults, tropical fish, houseplants galore, a garden, our work routine’s are still in place and life circumstances mean I have continued seeing my parents throughout the year. However, it’s the furry companions that are bridging an ever deepening chasm of loss, created by the deprivation of my normal social activity. You needed something bigger from me that day...to say goodbye. I wanted to leave with you that day...I couldn’t imagine my life without you. You left a gaping hole in my heart, my brain, my soul and my EVERYDAY. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t look at you and l the pain, and smile that you even happened in my life. 12 years with you wasn’t nearly long enough...but you made room for some other amazing babies to walk into my life.
