The terrible reality that happened here in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb obliterated the city turning it to ruins in an instant is something still lived through families like Moe’s. But it is a reality that no one ever wants repeated. The Hiroshima people’s resilience to rebuild this beautiful city but also to continue to live their lives overcoming great sorrow with the memory of what happened when the A bomb hit the city in 1.8 seconds is testament to their commitment to peace. We can learn a lot from people like Moe, especially in these dark days of war in 2024. Nukes The world’s nuclear powers (USA, Russia, the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel) have 12 512 nuclear warheads in their arsenals, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (@sipriorg). These weapons can kill tens of millions directly and, through their impact on agriculture, have the potential to kill billions. Using these weapons could cast us into to a global nuclear winter, from which humanity and much of life on Earth would not recover. 1945 In an effort to end WWII in the Pacific and prevent the massive U.S. casualties that could result from an invasion of Japan, U.S. President Harry S. Truman approved the dropping of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima (on August 6, 1945) and Nagasaki (on August 9). Japan’s surrender was announced on August 14. The bombings killed between 130,000 and 226,000 civilians, making the U.S. responsible for two of the deadliest days in human history. Since then, the nuclear bomb technology has evolved significantly, ensuring an even more devastating result should they be used. Communities from across the world whose health has been harmed and environment contaminated by nuclear testing, use and development — including Tewa Women United — have called on the international community to provide assistance as mandated by the UN nuclear ban treaty. In the General Debate at the second Meeting of State Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), a joint nuclear affected community statement endorsed by 26 affected community-led organizations, including Tewa Women United, was presented to the conference. Affected Communities members declared: “Nuclear weapons do harm every day. From the mining of uranium to the creation of the bomb and the everlasting radioactive waste, our planet carries the scars of so many nuclear sacrifice zones. Nuclear colonialism has disproportionately impacted Indigenous Peoples and marginalized communities. Indigenous Peoples lands were taken. 🇫🇯 Rights activist Mere Tuilau works tirelessly for the rights for the people of Fiji. 🚫 Christmas Island was a scene of a series of British nuclear tests in 1957-1958, creating massive horrible consequences for the Fijian soldiers, their family and it’s descendants. The soldiers were basically «guinea pigs». 😷 The long-term environmental and health concerns that would arise from the release of radioactive materials into the environment and ocean were not taking into account during testing. We were honoured to recently take part in the amazing Mayor Winchester's 'Mayors for Peace' Hiroshima Memorial event the other week. Paul Williams of the organising group SGI-UK explained that Mayors for Peace has three objectives - to realise a world without nuclear weapons, to create safe and resilient communities and to promote a culture of peace. This reflective event discussed the impact of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the use of the atomic bomb but also looked forward to how we can create a peaceful future. Maurice James from the University of Winchester displayed the ginkgo tree saplings that have been grown from seeds of trees that survived the atomic bombing! And we got to present about PeaceJam and all the work we do in Winchester alongside the Southampton and Winchester Visitor’s Group who ran a Refugee workshop for us at our March Slam. It was created to promote the music concert "Heiwa ga ii ni Kimatteru!!" (roughly translated, it means Peace is a Good Thing, or Celebration of Peace), held in Hiroshima, Japan on August 5, 1988. Thank you to my friend & collaborator, @angry_topaz_descendant @jampilgrimages, for allowing me to share her personal family story of the real, irreparable effects of the cruel and sadistic bombing of Hiroshima, in-between the days marking the 78th anniversaries of the atomic bombing on civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. “I remember seeing this photo [second photo] in my grandparent’s photo album and I knew that my grandfather’s family (Masuda) came from the Hiroshima area. I never put two and two together until I read the back of the photo just now: ‘Remains of the Masuda residence at Teramachi.’ The (first) photo is of my great-great grandmother, Ikuyo Kouno. She died in 1948. Makes me wonder…” If anyone has a family story or photos from Nagasaki, I would be honored to share.

The risk of nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia has been escalating. In light of that I recently took the photo posted below. I reflected on Hiroshima Day - August 6th - and Nagasaki Day - August 9th. Those are the dates of the unnecessary and inhumane atomic bomb drops on the people of Japan. This must never happen again, anywhere. Nuclear weapons do not provide the world with security; they undermine it. The best hope for humanity is our commitment to nuclear disarmament, and to nonviolent action, day by day...for ourselves, for our children, and for our children's children. If we want real and lasting security, we need to reconnect with each other, and recommit to working toward a world free of nuclear weapons. FROM THE EAST TO THE WORLD : Once upon a time there were no nuclear weapons and humankind never knew what it's effects looked like. Robert Oppenheimer in his words "We knew the world will not be the same ,few people laughed ,few people cried ,most people were silent ...Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" . The book by Akiko Mizue provides a testimony of the events and life before ,during and after the morning of August 6th ,1945 in Hiroshima. The stories are narrated 60 years later as experienced by herself (Akiko Mizue) who was 7 years old then and her sister Hiroko Takanashi who was 15 years old then . In words it provides clear images in mind on what it was like in the Hiroshima and what an nuclear bomb catastrophe looks like confirming the words of Robert. The book also provides pictorial history about how Hiroshima looked after the bombing. It took great courage and strength for the three siblings Akiko Mizue, Hiroko Takanashi and Mamoru Ishida to let the world know what using nuclear weapon can do to humanity . Akiko expresses her intention and passion to pass this message of peace beyond Japanese national borders . Through her daughter , Miho Mizue ( @thoughts_for_hiroshima ) who we met through Tsugumi Inoue (@tsu._.peace) Japanese medical student and peace ambassador I was able to receive above copies for reading and share with my friends ,family and colleagues as far as I can reach. A message of peace to the global nuclear superpowers to embrace peace and #bannuclearweapons in order to avoid the same mistake from happening again .
