Bodegas Alto Moncayo es una bodega situada en la Denominación de Origen Campo de Borja, en la parte más alta de la Ciudad de Borja, a 500 metros sobre el nivel del mar. . Se creó en el año 2002 tomando como punto de partida algunas de las viñas más viejas del lugar y con el objetivo de convertirla en referente mundial de vinos de Garnacha de altísima calidad, elaborados con clones autóctonos del lugar. Desde su privilegiada ubicación se puede divisar al Noroeste el Santuario de la Misericordia y La Muela de Borja. Al norte el Valle del Ebro y los Pirineos, y al Sureste la Sierra de Tabuenca y el valle del Huecha. En el Suroeste contemplamos en primer plano El Moncayo, que es el punto más alto de la Cordillera Ibérica (2.315 m) y que da nombre a la Bodega. En la actualidad produce vino a partir de 92 hectáreas de cepas de Garnacha autóctona de monte, plantadas hace varias décadas en las laderas de las estribaciones del Moncayo, en suelos únicos de arcilla roja mezclados con pizarras. Son suelos pobres en materia orgánica y poco profundos. La bodega está situada en Borja, centro neurálgico de la D.O. Campo de Borja. Comercializa sus vinos bajo tres marcas: “Aquilon”, “Alto Moncayo” y “Veraton”. Veraton 2019: Garnacha de una selección de parcelas de suelos de piedemonte de las sierras de Ainzón, Fuendejalón y Tabuenca, muy pedregosos, con cantos poco rodados, de calizas o margas, dolomías, cuarcitas y pizarras. Det fanns en flaska till i förrådet av den här godingen, Veraton från Bodegas Alto Moncayo, årgång 2016. Vinet är gjort på 100% Granacha från Borja i Spanien. Förra gången vi provade detta höjde vi det till skyarna (okt 2018). Och visst är det ett gott vin även 2023, men man kan nog också konstatera att man ändrar och utvecklar sin smak. 🤷♀️ Vinet är hursomhelst fruktigt, med toner av plommon, mörka bär, lite lakrits och vanilj. Ett kraftfullt vin med lång finish. 15,5% alkohol känns också lite i överkant. We had a bottle of Bodegas Alto Moncayo Garnacha 2019. Bodegas Alto Moncayo was founded in 2015 in Campo de Borja DO in the Aragon region of Northern Spain; and Campo de Borja DO was granted in 1980. While it was recognized fairly recently the area was recognized for wines back in the times of the Roman Empire. The winery is a partnership of the Andalucía winemaker Jorge Ordenez, the Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and Bodegas Borsao one of the largest and most influential producers in Campo de Borja. This is a big Grenache (Garnacha) wine that shows off the forty- to seventy-year-old vines and Grenache is the flagship of the winery and it is the King of grapes for this region of Spain. This wine was aged for twenty months in new barrels and it is a heady 16 proof. I think that I was the most smitten by this wine, but then I have found over the years that not everyone is a fan of Grenache, which is bit harder to appreciate compared to a Cabernet or a Merlot. Alto Moncayo 2015 Garnacha. Holding a whopping 16% (in reality probably more) this is the least trendy wine on the market today😂 you may call it a guilty pleasure, but to me it is more like pleasure. Day 1: nothing but vanilla, might be able to sense some fruit and maybe a bit of development in the background but hard to tell. Day 2: Vanilla has moved to the background but still very present. Dark dark fruit, figs and prunes but it certainly is grenache. Everything seems kind of roasted maybe even burned, but in great balance🤯 nice heat from the alcohol but still blanced. Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a winery located in the area covered by the Campo de Borja DO. 🇪🇸 It was founded in 2002 using some of the oldest vines in the area. ✨ Currently, it produces wine from 92 ha of native mountain strains of Garnacha, planted decades ago on the slopes of the Moncayo foothills in unique red clay soil mixed with slate. There is little organic matter in the soil, and it is not very deep. After our salads, both of the wives had the Lamb Shank Lombardia on a bed of Parmesan risotto with a natural braising reduction. The Caller had Chicken Gorgonzola with roasted red peppers, Gorgonzola cheese in a garlic sauce. I had Scallops which were pan seared and served with a bacon and spinach risotto and finished with a Port wine reduction. I might add that all of the dishes were excellent. Our Brides were asking for a big red wine to pair with the Lamb Shanks and I wanted something more unique for them to try, and finding one that would work with the chicken, and I would make it work with my scallops. Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton Garnacha 2018 is a fine example of wine from Campo de Borja DO. The town of Borja has a long history going back to 5 BC and thought to be from tribes of mixed Iberian and Celtic stock. The Borgia family, that is famous in Italy, during the Renaissance, and produced two Popes, were of Borjan origin. The winemaking goes back to the time of the Romans and the Cistercian monks. Rain is scarce in the region, the low regions are of brown limestone, while the middle elevation offers soil of deposited stones and iron-rich clay, while the highest elevation in the Moncayo foothills offer stones, iron and lime. I had to show two different views of the label, because the pretty part, doesn’t identify the wine, unless you already know the artwork. This wine is made from vines that are thirty to fifty years of age. The wine is barrel aged for sixteen months. Even the second vintage of this wine that I had was delicious with a nose of dark fruits, and those fruits follow through on the palate along with a touch of chocolate, nice tannins, balanced with a medium count finish with terroir. The winery makes three wines and I had a chance to try two of the wines (on that past visit), and all three are made from the Garnacha varietal, which is a grape that I enjoyed back in my youth, but I had no idea that I liked the Grenache grape, but I certainly loved Rhone wines, especially when I could get some Chateauneuf-du-Pape. While Tempranillo is the King in Spain, that honor in Campo de Borja goes to Garnacha. ⛰Compo de Borja, just a short drive south of the famed Rioja region in Spain is finally getting a little recognition. For years this was a region that did not have the cachet of their norther neighbor and often winemakers from Rioja with blend in wine grown in Campo de Borja. It wasn’t that it was the grapes they were growing were subpar, in fact it was the opposite. They knew of the extra ordinary quality of this lesser known region overshadowed by the powerhouse of Rioja. Rioja focuses more on Tempranillo for sure, but for years other varietals have been added to bolster some of the best Grand Reservas. After Spain joined the EU, a lot of infrastructure money hit the country and many of the hundred plus year old vines were sadly ripped out. Fortunately there has been a push to keep these old vines thriving in areas that otherwise may not be as known to the general public globally. Old vine Garnacha, and several different clones might I add make up the lion share of what’s grown in this region amongst a handful of other Spanish varieties. The wines of @campo_borja are a major reason why I began to be seriously interested in wines. Today, I have opened 2 of their world class Granacha. The one with the red label is their flagship wine, which usually costs about 30 - 35 € and the one with the blue label (I prefer it) is the little brother. 1) Alto Moncayo 2015 (flagship): Bouquet shows big and intense red berries, toast, earth. Palate is highly balanced, intense, shows some great acidity, while still being super dense and full of tannins. Long finish, “rumish” and intense. Points: 94/100 Drink: now - 2035 Price: 33 € Woooooooooooow! This wine is simply awesome! And check that price: 33€! A joke! A big one! This is one of the best Granacha I have ever drank, never disappoints. 2) Alto Moncayo Veraton: Bouquet shows cranberry, plums, mint, cherries, some toast. Palate shows good balance with some fruity mid palate and hot back palate. Highly toasted finish, vanilla and some whiskey cask. Points: 91+/100 Drink: now - 2027 Price: 22 € This is the entry level Granacha I started with. Back then, I couldn’t afford the big brother, even if it’s only about 10€ difference. Bodegas Alto Moncayo @bodegas_alto_moncayo is a relatively young winery established in 2002 in northern Spain, presiding over old Garnacha (Grenache) vines planted in the foothills. Despite their relative youth, they have had no challenges putting out fantastic wines, with nearly all of their vintages and labels scoring over 90 pts through various media. This 2017 Veraton, despite being their third label, is no slouch. Deep and dark with an intoxicating nose of currant, plum and other dark red and blue fruits, it begs to be swirled. On the palate much of the same - unrestrained fruit on the front yielding to grippy tannins and a lingering finish of tobacco and slate. With some time to settle, subtle oak and vanilla notes come through. Bodegas Alto Moncayo Garnacha 2015 and I was just amazed at how much awesome this wine was compared to the Veraton. My notes had in big letters “DELICIOUS” and full bodied and awesome fruit and interesting terroir. Can you tell that I was smitten? The difference here was that the vines were forty to seventy years old and aged for twenty months in new barrels. The Garnacha is considered the flagship of the winery. While Tempranillo is the King in Spain, that honor in Campo de Borja goes to Garnacha. Bodegas Alto Moncayo Veraton 2015 and my notes for this wine was that it had a big nose, dark fruits and chocolate and a nice finish. This wine was made from vines that were from thirty to fifty years old and aged in barrels for sixteen months and was I impressed. I thought boy, this would be a great wine for Thanksgiving for someone that wants a more daring wine to pair with a roasted turkey. Bodegas Alto Moncayo was founded in 2015 in Campo de Borja DO in the Aragon region of Northern Spain; and Campo de Borja DO was granted in 1980. While it was recognized fairly recently the area was recognized for wines back in the times of the Roman Empire.
