🥹I will be sending my counselling bill to Alice Winn because the ugly sobs this book pulled out of me!! No wonder this won the Waterstones debut fiction prize. The story begins in 1914, Gaunt and Elwood are both still in school and war is just a game to play in-between lessons. When Gaunt is pressured to enlist, Winn explores the lost of innocence and doesn’t shy away from the brutality of the frontline. Quickly Elwood follows and joins Gaunt along with the majority of their peers group. Elwoods and Gaunt’s relationship is poetic and tragic. Their love story stole my heart and while this is at the centre, we come to know so many characters, only see their name in the papers. It’s heartbreaking and raw. I honestly didn’t expect to love this book so much. The audiobook is stunning! Can’t wait to talk about it tomorrow at the @theprosebookclub 🫶🏼

Several chapters in and feeling very gripped by Laura Purcell’s The Whispering Muse. Jenny Wilcox begins a new job as a dresser in Victorian London’s Mercury theatre. Oh no. I judged a book by its cover 🙈 I saw a few book reccs pop up for this, and I was like “ummm no, not for me”..but then I read a bunch of reviews, and they were GOOD, like they really sold it for me to give it a try…OMG, this is a REALLY good book! Like I am already 58% in and I DO NOT want it to end! I have never found a male writer to truly capture the cozy/feel good/magical realism (but a bit of drama) vibes that I soooo love, UNTIL NOW. ⚔️Five Broken Blades – Mai Corland ⚔️ I have found the fantasy book of the year. YUP. I SAID IT. I couldn’t put this book down, I laughed, I gasped, I cried and then I sat in shock because I need book 2 😭 We have 5 killers & 6 liars who are all trying to assassinate the king. Their mission brings them together but they know they can’t trust each other. To survive, they need to work together. Let the best liar win. This is for the lovers of heists and grey characters. It’s such a unique story that had me rushing back to find what happens next. Usually, there are characters that I’m less connected to but that wasn’t the case here. NO SKIPS. The pacing was spot on with the rotation of POV being well balanced. I loved every character, even when I was suspicious of them 🤣 The disabled and queer representation was beautiful. In this fantasy world, it is a violent and patriarchal but status is the thing everyone cares about. TW are clearly stated at the start so please check them. THE ENDING?!? I’m still reeling. A blizzard, an intruder an old, haunting home, sets the premise for an eerily haunting and atmospherical novel about marriage, motherhood and the female experience. ☕ Coffee & Cᴜʀʀᴇɴᴛʟʏ Rᴇᴀᴅɪɴɢ 📚 Oh Monday..... we meet again! 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 I had to finish an arc read before I could dive in.... but Wild Love by @authorelsiesilver had been top anticipated read since the reveal and I am so exited. 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 A lot of water with @liquidiv and coffee.... pretty much living off that stuff 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 Bluey! not gonna lie I love those heelers as much as my kids do. Took a trip to #ParisOntario today because I loved visiting the adorable little Dog Eared Cafe (which is also a used bookstore) when we were here last year. Paris is a beautiful town and @dogearedcafe was a really nice place to relax, enjoy a cold drink and #mycurrentread for a little while. Yes, I’m still reading Elsewhere, but despite my earlier report that I was finding it just okay, I’ve turned a corner and have really started to like it. In fact, I am enjoying it enough that I looked for a copy of Saint X, also by Alexis Schaitken, while I was at the bookstore. No luck. From the dog-eared definition out in front: “a turn of phrase reminiscent of something adored - that wears its lover’s finger prints on its skin - leaving an impression, permanant and fond; proof that even the damaged holds value, and a story worth being told.” How do you shop in used bookstores? Number 22 on my “Read 100 Books You Already Own Before Buying Any New Books” challenge that I started in 2024: Honky Tonk Samurai, by Joe R. Lansdale; 2016. A Hap and Leonard novel. I love anything Joe R. Lansdale writes, and much like Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe books, there’s no such thing as a bad Hap and Leonard story. I watched all three seasons of the Sundance show, and now I can’t get James Purefoy and Michael Kenneth Williams out of my head whenever I picture Hap and Leonard.
