Silver Appleyard Ducks are a heritage breed meat bird. They're also great egg producers making it dual purpose. The breed is listed as 'threatened' by the Livestock Conservancy. They are fast growing & have tolerated the heat really well. Their meat is lean and less greasy than other breeds. We are raising them for meat & eggs. Moved 24 5gal buckets of duck water to 16 fruit trees & parts of the garden & 13 buckets of pig water to the remaining 13 trees. Doing this 2-3x times a week is definitely making me farm strong😅! First time doing strawberries...it's been amazing!! I only did one 4x8 bed to see what I would get. We have been harvesting a bowl full every morning!! We started freezing them to use in smoothies and for different recipes. They are so sweet and full of flavor. There's no going back to store bought strawberries. 💐I had the most wonderful Mother’s Day. I am so blessed! 🌷The first gift I received was just words, but they were unexpected and very meaningful. When I first said I was going to process chickens, my husband teased me. He reminded me that less than a decade ago, I would gag if I had to handle chicken with bones in it while I was cooking. Yesterday, as to told him about how I processed the chickens, my husband said, “I’m so proud of you!” I really needed to hear that. 🌹My oldest daughter isn’t in any of the pics. She planned out the day’s events and shopped before driving her husband back to his military base. She returned home last night, but she will be moving with him as early as Friday. I will miss them more than I can say! 🌺My youngest two daughters blessed me with a coffee, petit fours, and a garbage bag full of used coffee grounds from Starbucks. The snack was a wonderful treat, but I was over the moon to get those coffee grounds. I used some in my garden and compost. Hopefully, that will help deter the snails, as well as provide nutrients. 🌸The night ended with an amazing dinner, courtesy of my husband and younger girls, and then a walk with my youngest. 🌼The days are fleeting. I spent a lovely day with my sweet friend Shelli @wildvillagefarm. 🐮We started out the morning with a visit to see her beautiful new calf. It was born sometime during the night. Mamma and baby are going great! 🐔Then, I learned another new skill. I processed chickens! The first chicken I processed was my own aging hen. Not gonna lie… I cried. My hen is in the freezer for now. When we moved in we knew it was “just a matter of time” until we’d have to make repairs on the property. July marks two years since we’ve been here. The first six months focused on making our cabin a livable home for toddler and soon-to-be baby. We encountered set back after setback, but then slowly this became home. In January, our HVAC unit had to be replaced and now, our septic system must be completely redone seeing as it wasn’t done to code in the first place. The good news is, we’re running out of major appliances to breakdown. Dolly is starting to look like a professional! She got a hold of a chicken a few weeks ago. We had to go ahead and harvest the bird. It was a mobile toy to her...6 month old puppy. End of the weekend harvest! We have spent the last 2 weekends expanding our orchard and garden spaces! Spring time is GO! time. We do everything ourselves and it's ALOT of hard work. We expanded the garden from 10 beds to 22 and orchards from 12 fruit trees to 27!! I expanded my blackberries and started strawberries! All on 1 acre! My husband and I definitely make a great team. They are earlier than expected, but our first round of ranch kids are here. This season we’re just focusing on the ins and outs of breeding our goats. Next year we’ll focus on milking. The mama, Taufy, did so well! We had a playdate and I saw her hiding in the billy pen and said, she must be getting ready to birth soon. Two hours later we saw the babies in the field still very wet. She’s a very protective mother… for good reason. Our llama laid on one of her kids right after it was born (I don’t know if this is hostile or protective). She needed no assistance, which I’m a firm believer that most mammalian births do not need assistance. Her sweet nuzzles and noises to her babies give me fever for my own. I found this photo of my place (that used to be grandpa and grandma’s before it was my mom’s). I found it the same day I picked the last of the zinnias. See the heart? The picture shows grandpa’s carport - which is now a garage with a greenhouse out back and the China berry trees in their prime (now gone) where my fenced garden and chicken coop now sit. We have only been here four years, and we have done so much. It’s crazy looking at the old photos. Today was processing day for Big Red. Big Red was a huge Easter Egger born from one of our OGs that passed this past summer. He was special to us. He was big and beautiful. I had big breeding plans for him. We built a coop and raised a flock for him. Unfortunately he did not get along with any of the other roos in the yard. He was not a gentleman to the girls. Here on the farm, some animals are kept as pets. Some are raised to breed. Some are raised for food. Every one of them are loved. We wanted to honor him for Christmas dinner. This week is getting bitter cold. We decided to process him today and honor him at a farm to table dinner this week with friends. Another great healthy meal for moving out extra produce is a stir fry! I used peppers, onions, asian greens & green beans from the garden w/store bought mushrooms. Sliced, battered and air fried eggplant as a meat replacement. I served it on top of cauliflower fried rice w/scrambled farm fresh eggs. Eggplant has been plentiful! We can only eat so much Eggplant Parm😅 Came across this recipe and it's a new favorite! Slice eggplant 1/2 in thick. Pat w/flour, dip in egg, roll in panko bread crumbs/garlic salt/Parm Chz, spray slices w/olive oil and air fry at 400 for 14 mins, flip and air fry for additional 4 mins...Super Easy! Yes, I love directly sowing seeds vs indoor starters. But it's frustrating when it rains really hard and it scatters your seeds all over the place. Especially when you love square foot gardening due to its perfectly uniform squares😂. Its super heartbreaking when hard rain & strong winds break all of your seedlings/transplants. I have found using bug row covers allows your newly seeded/planted beds the best of the rains, but w/o the mess it and hard winds can bring. Using a soil thermometer, shade cloths or frost covers has been my new favorite way to germinate seeds vs doing it indoors. Planting guides are just guides. Especially w/how crazy some of our weather patterns have been. Going by the soil temperature, using shade cloths to cool the soil or using frost covers to warm the soil, not only germinate seeds faster, it allows you to possibly seed earlier or tells you to wait a little longer.
