I didn’t find it to be quite as engaging as The Shining, but I loved getting to know Danny Torrence as an adult. I grew up around alcoholism and have personally experienced the long term effects of that sort of childhood, so Doctor Sleep felt like it was written for me, as I’m sure it has to many people who grew up with loved ones who were sick in this way. It was impactful to read a book by Sai King that was written during his own struggles with alcoholism (The Shining), and then following directly with Doctor Sleep, which was written with much more experience and healing time. Just completed this re-read of the first Stephen King novel I had ever read — in 1979! Forty-four years later, when thinking of The Shining, all I could see in my head were Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall’s faces. Reconnecting with the book reminded me of how I became a King Constant Reader. This book is as good as a horror novel gets. As I read some of the non-movie scenes (the shifting topiaries, the menacing wasps, the eerie scrapbook) I remembered my 13-year-old self being terrified and amazed at what I was reading in my shiny silver paperback edition that I wish I still owned. This is a classic that every horror fan must read. Note to fans of Stanley Kubrick’s movie: the book is better. There’s so much that’s left out of the movie (and it’s 2.5 hours long) that adds to the story. Oct. 30 2019 was the premiere of Doctor Sleep. I didn’t have high expectations for this movie, since I love The Shining and was dubious that any sequel would rise up to its level. And I was not only wrong, but totally blown away by this one. Taken from Stephen King’s own novel, director Mike Flanagan picks up on disillusioned, down and out Danny Torrence, now a drinker but one with psychic powers. He drinks to suppress those powers. Then his life changes when he makes a psychic link to a young girl named Abra who has strong psychic powers of her own, and who begins to follow the menacing activities of the True Knot, a cult of psychic vampires led by the truly evil Rose the Hat, who’s powers grow stronger when they apply extreme terror to children. Quite a story Mr. King developed, and watching Danny and Abra join forces to take down the cult is gripping stuff. The scene where the cult kidnaps a little boy in Iowa may be one of the most agonizing you’ll ever watch. Excellent work by Ewan McGregor as Danny, Kyliegh Curran as Abra and Rebecca Ferguson as Rose. I especially loved the final return to The Overlook hotel which pays a fine tribute to director Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 masterpiece. Da quando mi sono appassionata all’universo tappeti ho cominciato a notarli, notarli ovunque. Capita così di guardare un film e notare il particolare. Notare il particolare che altrimenti passerebbe quasi in silenzio, mi sono resa conto che in moltissimi film il tappeto assume un ruolo vivo, diventa personaggio parte del cast In Dr. Sleep, la storia di Danny “Dan” Torrence dopo le vicende di Shining nell’Overlook Hotel, c’è un tappeto che si distingue da tutti gli altri, già presenti nel cult movie del 1980 Il tappeto, che assume un ruolo differente, è quello su cui Rose The Hat medita e compie i suoi viaggi altrove. Ed è un tappeto diverso sia nel disegno del campo che nelle dimensioni. Sarà, quindi, quel tappeto volante che troviamo nelle fiabe? Ma poi, perché i tappeti volano? Il tappeto che permette, più che al corpo fisico, all’anima di viaggiare. Perché è così che Rose compie i suoi viaggi. Il tappeto che diviene casa per la mente, un luogo sacro in cui vivere un rituale; quello che Rose compie sedendosi nella posizione del loto e rilassando le spalle poggia le mani, con i palmi rivolti verso l’alto, sulle ginocchia e come se fosse un interruttore è da un’altra parte. This movie was shot at Elstree Studios at the same time that The Muppet Show was being taped there. Richard Hunt met some of The Shining's cast when they stopped by the Muppet Show studio. Olha quem criou vergonha e voltou pra atualizar a página 🪄 Doutor Sono é o tema da postagem de hoje e sem mais delongas eu digo que a sequência não faz jus ao meu querido Iluminado. Aqui temos um Danny Torrance adulto e alcoólatra, resultado do trauma vivido lá no Overlook quando ele era pitico. Mas ao contrário de Jack (seu pai), Danny busca ajuda para conseguir lidar com seu vício e impulsos destrutivos, ele passa a frequentar um AA e trabalhar seus traumas. King nos mostra nessa sequência que os traumas vividos por Danny e sua mãe após os acontecimentos não cessaram no final de O Iluminado, como era de se imaginar (ou pelo menos como eu imaginei) quando derrotaram o hotel. No desenrolar da história somos apresentados a Abra, uma menina de 12 anos ainda mais Iluminada que o próprio Danny e que também precisa de alguém para guia-la. O livro não é enrolativo ou repetitivo, é uma verdadeira continuação. King mostra que mesmo com um tema similar, poucos padrões se repetem. Enquanto escrevo aqui acabo me perguntando se Doutor Sono não merece outra chance. Óbvio que sim, só não sei quando. Como vários filmes do King, Doutor Sono foi adaptado para as telas em 2019, com o Obi Wan Kenobi no papel do Danny (não vi ainda, portanto não vou opinar) A Suma poderia ter feito um exemplar de capa dura, mas eu não tenho mais paciência para essa discussão. Dzień dobry! 🍁 Kontynuując temat "październik miesiącem horroru" przyszedł czas na książkę, którą już od dawna marzyłam przeczytać - "Lśnienie" Stephena Kinga 🤩 I dokładnie tak jak się spodziewałam, była po prostu genialna! Nie wiem czy jest potrzeba przytaczania fabuły, gdyż myślę, że każdy, nawet jeśli nie oglądał ekranizacji Stanleya Kubricka, orientuje się o czym jest ta powieść. Obydwa te obrazy, mimo kilku rażących różnic, są wybitnymi pionierami swojego gatunku 🔥 Gwoli ścisłości jednak, po krótce nakreślę wam o co chodzi. Głównymi bohaterami Kingowskiego "Lśnienia" jest rodzina Torreance'ów - Jack, Wendy i Danny. Jack to były nauczyciel, były alkoholik, obecnie pracujący nad powieścią. Wendy (a właściwie Winifreda) zajmuje się domem i 5-letnim synkiem. Nakreślona zostaje jej zła relacja z matką, trauma po śmierci siostry i problemy w małżeństwie z Jackiem. Danny to wyjątkowy chłopczyk, który potrafi podsłuchiwać myśli innych ludzi, odczytywać emanującą od nich energię oraz przewidywać przyszłość. Danny lśni 😯 Rodzina na skraju bankructwa dostaje szansę na zmiany. Jack zatrudnia się jako dozorca w położnym w Górach Stołowych hotelu Panorama. Jak się okazuje, skrywa on wiele sekretów i bardzo intrygującą historię. Niemalże od przekroczenia progu hotelu, Danny widzi dziwne rzeczy, które jak jednak twierdzi "nie mogą zrobić mu krzywdy". Czy aby na pewno? 🤔 Autor sprawił, że książka już od pierwszej strony trzyma czytelnika w napięciu. Dopiski w nawiasach, będące opisem myśli głównych bohaterów sprawiają, że doskonale wtapiamy się w ich psychikę i rozumiemy sposób w jaki odbierają otaczającą ich rzeczywistość. Mimo, iż są rodziną to ludzie całkowicie odmienni, indywidualne charaktery, które usilnie próbują utrzymać się razem. Zabieg ten wyszedl Kingowi po mistrzowsku. "Lśnienie" ma po prostu wszystkie elementy, jakie powinien posiadać dobry horror. To arcydzieło literatury mimo upływu czasu nadal straszy, wywołuje ciarki na plecach i wypieki na policzkach. 516 stron pochłonęłam w moment i uważam, że dawno żadna książka nie zrobiła na mnie takiego wrażenia. W koncu jak to powiedział Joey Tribiani - "The scariest book ever" 🙈🔥 #czytamsuspens . . . .
Tonight, I am continuing through my horror movie watch by watching The Shining! On HBO Max! I have watched this movie before, but it’s been a long time. I always feel like I’m watching it however because it’s still highly relevant in pop culture today. Made in 1980, and directed by Stanley Kubrik (Who directed Full Metal Jacket and 2001: A Space Odyssey), and starring Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrence (Also plays Jack Napier/Joker in Batman (1989) and R.P. Questo non è il classico romanzo che vi aspettereste da Stephen King, questa è una sceneggiatura e il bello è che King è riuscito ad inserire le stesse vibes che metterebbe in un romanzo. Ma veniamo alla trama. Ci troviamo a Little Tall Island, una piccola isoletta sulle coste del Maine, in cui vive una piccola comunità, che dovrà far fronte ad una forte tempesta, una di quelle che non se ne vedevano da decenni. Sono preparati, o quasi, a questo tipo di emergenze, ma non sono preparati per l'"uomo" che andrà a fargli visita: Linoge. Linoge si fa strada nelle loro teste, nelle loro paure, uccidendo, quasi senza sporcarsi le mani. Linoge sembra un uomo, ma un uomo non può fare certe cose, non può sapere certe cose. Scrosta dal passato di alcuni cittadini, il loro sordido passato, accusandoli e mettendoli uno contro l'altro, ma li avverte: se gli daranno ciò che vuole, lui se ne andrà. Ma cosa vuole Linoge? A questo punto, ovviamente mi devo fermare per non fare troppi spoiler. Devo dire che ciò che vuole è abbastanza intuibile leggendo il libro, non mi ha sorpresa, ciò che mi ha lasciato sorpresa, lasciandomi letteralmente a bocca aperta è un'altra cosa, ma non posso rivelarvela, se volete ve ne posso parlare in privato, almeno con quelli che hanno letto il libro. Il bello di questo libro è l'ansia, il senso di inquietudine, di qualcosa di claustrofobico che esce ad ogni pagina, costringendoti a divorarlo. E forse per la prima volta sono riusciti a metterlo fedelmente su pellicola con una miniserie del 1999 che potete trovare su Prime Video. Ovviamente anche in questo libro, King cita King, nominando Dolore Clairborne e Danny Torrence. Mi è piaciuto molto anche il richiamo ad un classico della letteratura horror: L'esorcista, che consiglio assolutamente di leggere, ne avevo parlato anche io in un post, se vi piace provare ansia mentre leggete è il libro per voi! Che altro dire, se non che sono rimasta totalmente soddisfatta da questo libro? Ho apprezzato tanto anche l'introduzione di King, amo quando parla direttamente al lettore usando una certa confidenza.
