Is “The Shining” (1980) Stanley Kubrick’s best film? I can never answer that. Is it one of the best films of all time? Without a doubt, yes. Of course, being a Kubrick film, the soundtrack would be something very special. Similar to the modernist artistic-music repertoire he first explored in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968), Kubrick left the process of matching passages of music to film to the discretion of music editor Gordon Stainforth. Wendy Carlos wrote the title track and ‘Rocky Mountains’ with Rachel Elkind providing sweeping vocals. Hired to compose the entire soundtrack, Carlos had his work almost completely rejected - in pure Kubrick fashion - about two months before the film’s premiere in the USA. In the symphonic part, the pieces by Béla Bartók, Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki sound extremely creepy and eerie in the context of this film. In fact, every orchestral work here feels like it was written with this film in mind. The music perfectly evokes the film, and for me this also works the other way around. The LP soundtrack album was withdrawn due to issues with music licensing. As I’m sure many of you know, the Timberland Lodge caught on fire due to fireplace embers igniting the roof. Thanks to local first responders the flames did not penetrate the building interior. The hotel was closed for only a couple days and reopened yesterday! Pretty incredible. This is a very historic hotel and I’m beyond honored to be able to put on my “THE SHINING” event here every year. On Set Cinema “THE SHINING” is happening on Sunday, October 6th! I’ll be showing the film at Timberline …aka The Overlook in beautiful Mount Hood, Oregon. The Timberline Lodge sits high on the shoulder of one of the most iconic mountain peaks in the Pacific Northwest and served as the actual filming location for the establishing exterior shots of the infamous Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s cinematic adaptation of Stephen King’s terrifying novel, The Shining! This is a rare public screening of the movie at Timberline and seating is limited. Fans will have access to the hotel grounds for the majority of the day, as well as the interior of the lodge. 4/20/2024: ⛰️🥾 My first hike of the year! Of course it was with @outyorkadventures and some amazing hikers. We had so much fun and loved being in the mountains so much, we were about to spend the night at the Overlook Mountain House but it just happened that they are out of business. But in the end, there is still good in Jack Torrance in this version of The Shining. And in this version, the good prevails. Realizing he is beyond saving, and there is no other way to stop the malevolent forces of the Overlook, in one beautiful sacrificial moment, he decides not to release the pressure on those boilers, knowing full well what will happen. He tells Danny to run, but not before telling him he loves him one more time. And just as Wendy, Danny, and a reawakened Dick Halloran race off, the hotel goes up in flames and burns to the ground. Happy birthday to the legendary Jack Nicholson, 87 years young today! He's retired now, but what a career he had; he's the most Oscar-nominated male actor, and won three of them (only three male actors have achieved this) and one of only two actors (the other's Michael Caine) to be nominated for Oscars in every decade from the 60s to the 2000s. After Jack clobbers Dick Halloran, two of the hotel’s spirits appear behind the front desk. They remind him he still has other work to do. Danny is still up to no good and needs “correcting.” And there’s those boilers that need daily attention. Jack can’t forget them! If he fails to release the pressure on those old boilers, why the whole place could go up in flames! Jack heads towards the elevator determined to take care of business, while Dick’s lifeless body lies on the floor. In that last photo I am holding the actual key to room #217. All of the other rooms in the hotel have modern key cards as you would expect in any hotel, but not room #217. It still has the original, old fashioned key. All the other old fashioned keys that hang on the wall behind the front desk are just replicas. And they all hang facing right, while the key to room #217 faces left. You can see it just over the front desk clerk’s shoulder in the close up shot. Jack Torrance’s madness is now in full swing at the Overlook that has come alive with its past. Jack is seen dancing alone in the room where the big party is being held back in the 1920’s, but in his minds eye, he is far from alone. He sees all the ghosts of the hotels past. After mingling with the hotels former “guests”, he returns to the bar where a whole new bottle of Jack Daniels awaits him. Meanwhile, Danny has told his mother that daddy is in trouble and he’s not writing a book anymore, so Wendy goes looking for him. After a violent encounter in the bar where she knocks Jack out with that bottle after he throws Danny across the room, Wendy changes her clothes and walks around the hotel, talking to its spirits. She witnesses the chairs falling off the tables in the hotels dining room. It is at this moment Dick Halloran arrives and Jack regains consciousness and attacks Dick at the bottom of the stairs. Inside the hotel, Jack has succumbed to the hotel’s malevolent forces, and his temptation to drink, when a bottle of his favorite brand of booze is left out on the bar for him. Soon a friendly bartender appears and is only too happy to begin pouring. After a few drinks, Jack is told he’s wanted in the other room, where a big party is going on. When he arrives, he walks amongst the ghosts of the past, those in attendance at that early 1920’s party we saw guests arriving for at the start of the second episode. And low and behold, the music is provided by the Gage Creed Orchestra, led by none other than Stephen King himself. The third and final episode of The Shining mini-series is when things REALLY start to go berserk. After Danny finishes playing in the snow with the creepy topiary animals, he comes back inside, and soon recognizes that something ain’t right in Denmark. Using his shine, he sends a mental S.O.S. to Dick Halloran, back in Florida. Dick receives the signal loud and clear in the Florida diner where he’s trying to enjoy a meal, and everyone thinks he’s having a heart attack. Episode 2 concludes with a glimpse of the beautiful Stanley Hotel at night, as the madness is beginning to unfold within it’s stunning walls. The following morning, Wendy is doing a little house cleaning. She is cleaning the windows when she eyes Danny enjoying playing in the freshly fallen snow. She yells out to Danny asking him to stay where she can see him. He obliges, turning to say “I will mom!”, but when he turns back to playing with the animals, they begin to come to life behind him. After his harrowing encounter outside with the playground toys and topiary animals coming to life, Jack goes back inside the Overlook. Jack becomes incensed when he realizes the hotel’s radio is broken. He assumes Danny must have done it while playing in the office, against his orders. Jack grabs the Denver croquet mallet (seen in a much more innocent scene in the very first episode when the children were playing Denver croquet) and yells for Danny. He then begins to make his way up the stairs when Danny appears at the 2nd floor landing. Danny denies breaking the radio, but does tell his parents about the strange lady in the bathtub he encountered in room #217. Continuing with episode 2, after Danny’s harrowing experience trying to check out room #217, we see an ominous photo of the hotel exterior at night. Being here at night outside in the dark? Your mind plays tricks on you. It even felt ominous standing out there by the parking lot taking those photos! The next morning, Jack goes outside to clean the snow off of the miniature version of the Overlook hotel when he the windows and doors on the house start opening and closing, the playground swings start swinging, and the topiary animals start coming to life, and Jack runs inside for safety. The drink is named after the closing song from The Shining and features protagonist Jack Torrance’s favorite whiskey: Jack Daniels. “I wanted to do a dark, stirred cocktail that could transition either to spring or fall,” explains Alex Anderson (creator of the original drink), who adds floral complexity with chamomile liqueur, balanced by the bitter notes of Varnelli Sibilla. Later, Danny disobeys the warnings to avoid room #217 and sneaks out headed in its direction. These shots were taken from the hotel’s 4th floor, which is reportedly it’s most haunted. This was originally an attic where children played. To this day the hotel receives regular complaints from guests staying on the 4th floor reporting noisy children playing at all hours of the night when there are no children staying on that floor!
