The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) series dir. Michael Fimognari & Mike Flanagan Two siblings, Roderick and Madeline Usher, have built a pharmaceutical company into an empire of wealth, privilege, and power. They're seemingly infallible. That is until Roderick's children, from youngest to oldest, begin to die one by one and at the very center is a mysterious woman who seems to be everywhere. We've come at last to Flanagan's last Netflix show and this one is definitely one of his best. It's not better than Hill House, but this is about on par with Midnight Mass for me. I loved that Bruce Greenwood got to be in the limelight for this miniseries. I've always been a fan and he's usually relegated to semi-important side character, but here he takes center stage and he does it well. However, it's Carla Gugino as the mysterious Verna that I feel is the best of the bunch! But there are fantastic performances all around and I'm thankful that everyone had their own personal episode to shine. As Flanagan's last Netflix show, it feels so appropriate that just about everyone from his previous Netflix shows came back to take a bow, so to say. I say just about, as there are a few notables that are missing like Hamish Linklater and Victoria Pedretti, to name a few. As for my own criticisms, I feel like some of the information from the final episode should have been revealed in episode 1. (like the deal) I didn't quite feel wrapped up with Verna as I wanted to be. And the final death, honestly, struck both me and Allen as kind of unintentionally hilarious! But overall, we loved the show and how it so often felt like the ultimate love letter to Edgar Allan Poe. It's honestly too bad that Flanagan never got to do something similar with H. P. Lovecraft - but I'm planting that seed into the universe in case somebody reads this. BUT! I'm so looking forward to his Dark Tower adaptation, it'll likely be his magnum opus.

The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) es ambiciosa, grandilocuente, por momentos incoherente, tiene muchísimo estilo, se va al carajo en varios tramos y me encantó. Mike Flanagan lo hizo de nuevo. La caída de la familia (a la que le sobran integrantes, digamos todo) salpicada con referencias a cada rato a la obra de Edgar Allan Poe (que suman si la conoces pero tampoco son fundamentales para entender la cosa) hacen una serie adictiva -como casi todo lo que hace Netflix- a la que tenés que darle play sin poder parar. I’ve been a fan of Mike Flanagan ever since Hill House, and The Fall of the House of Usher continued this trend. Despite my skepticism after episode 1, I trusted the storytelling process and was rewarded handsomely. Lenore’s deplorable relatives may have pushed their weight around in grand fashion, but it was ultimately her understated altruism that ended up winning the day. In the face of immense adversity, she stepped up to the plate and asserted her autonomy with complete poise. Lenore’s final remark towards Pym was just the catharsis I needed after all the craziness that went down. There’s nothing quite like a good zinger followed by a dramatic exit, and this one was immaculate. DOCTOR SUEÑO: GRAN SECUELA DE UN CLÁSICO DEL CINE Basada en la obra de #stephenking , la historia se centra en Danny Torrance quien 30 años después de los sucesos de "El Resplandor", debe ayudar a una niña cazada por un grupo de demonios que se alimentan de gente con sus mismos dones. #mikeflanagan , quien ya venía de dirigir exitosos films y series de terror, incluyendo la adaptación de "El juego de Gerald" del propio King, tuvo una tarea imposible por cumplir con este proyecto: mantenerse fiel a la obra del autor y al mismo tiempo satisfacer a los fanáticos y espectadores de la adaptación de Kubrick, quienes conforman la gran mayoría del público. Y contra todo pronóstico lo logró. #doctorsueño es una de las mejores películas y adaptaciones que se han hecho del trabajo del autor, presentando un tono y rumbo distintos a los de la película de Kubrick, y a su vez utilizando varios de los elementos y planos presentes en ella sin abusar ni depender de estos. Desde los aspectos técnicos, fue un lujo poder presenciar este film en la gran pantalla. La forma en que Flanagan maneja y expande los elementos sobrenaturales y los poderes en torno al resplandor fue una apuesta arriesgada, considerando la crudeza y la sutileza extremas con las que fueron tratados hace casi 4 décadas. Una escena tan surreal como la de la proyección astral es un claro ejemplo, pero la tensión y opulencia visual en ella logran conseguir uno de los momentos visuales más logrados de la obra del director, aparte de estar manejada con verosimilitud. En cuanto al reparto, #ewanmcgregor hace un gran trabajo como la versión adulta de Danny, logrando que empatices con facilidad con el personaje y su camino en la historia. #rebeccaferguson se roba el film como Rose The Hat, una de las antagonistas mejor desarrolladas de un film de terror de estos últimos años. Solo a un valiente o a un loco se le ocurriría hacer una continuación de una obra de Stanley Kubrick y de una de Stephen King. Bueno, Mike Flanagan lo hizo y le salió una gran película como es Doctor Sleep (2019). El secreto es tener una antagonista como Rebecca Ferguson, un protagonista como Ewan McGregor y una revelación como Kyliegh Curran. Más una historia que toma cositas de la película y otras de la literatura de King, haciendo una continuación respetuosa y que aporta algunas ideas nuevas (aunque por momentos la sombra de Kubrick es demasiado grande y no parece querer salir mucho de ella el director) y un ritmo preciso para llegar a un último acto que es puro suspenso y puro homenaje. The Shining es intocable pero acá Flanagan hizo algo dignísimo y no, no está loco; solo tiene mucho talento como narrador de las partes oscuras del alma humana. FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER 2023 series I really liked this, quite knew that wild be the case as like anything #poe 😁 and love to see Carla in anything! Fun twist to several movies from the past, been a while since read anything and little less since watched the #vincentprice movies of these, was fun to see how they twisted things. The powerful Usher family find themselves under attack from a mystery source, and the world looks on as each member of the family dies in seemingly tragic and accidental circumstances…but is that what’s happening? Review: Another great outing from the team that brought us Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and Bly Manor. The cast is yet again mostly familiar if you have seen the shows I just mentioned, but we have a few new and very welcome additions this time around. Bruce Greenwood is always a great choice for the head of the family, and Mark Hamill is perfect in his role as the slimy family lawyer. This show has elements both creepy and hard to watch, as some of the deaths get really inventive, and mixes in the obligatory jump scare here and there. As usual, pay attention to the background, and the small details, as the clues and the foreshadowing are always present. I guess maybe I could float some trigger warnings for spousal abuse in there but I guess if you’re diving into a horror show like this you’re already expecting a rough time. this show is just as good as I was hoping it wouldn’t be considering it’s calibre, and I was not disappointed at all. I only deducted a point as it wasn’t quiiiiiiite as good as Hill House for me, but it was up there. I didn't get the chance to watch this, because I didn't watch "The Shining," I was afraid I might be confused. I finally got the chance to watch "The Shining," but I actually didn't find it that great (I'm sorry). So, I decided to watch "Doctor Sleep." Well, this is just me, I actually liked this more than "The Shining," again that is just me. Love all the performances, Ewan McGregor was incredible, Rebecca Ferguson was amazing, and I even thought Kyleigh Curran was pretty good in this. Going to be honest here, the last 30 minutes were a nostalgia trip from "The Shining." The thing is, I was taken out of the movie. I was like "Wow, it is literally the best parts of "The Shining." And it felt kind of lazy. I am sure people loved it and that is great, but again I was taken out of the movie. Overall, I actually prefer this than the original. That is just me. Oct. 30 2019 was the premiere of Doctor Sleep. I didn’t have high expectations for this movie, since I love The Shining and was dubious that any sequel would rise up to its level. And I was not only wrong, but totally blown away by this one. Taken from Stephen King’s own novel, director Mike Flanagan picks up on disillusioned, down and out Danny Torrence, now a drinker but one with psychic powers. He drinks to suppress those powers. Then his life changes when he makes a psychic link to a young girl named Abra who has strong psychic powers of her own, and who begins to follow the menacing activities of the True Knot, a cult of psychic vampires led by the truly evil Rose the Hat, who’s powers grow stronger when they apply extreme terror to children. Quite a story Mr. King developed, and watching Danny and Abra join forces to take down the cult is gripping stuff. The scene where the cult kidnaps a little boy in Iowa may be one of the most agonizing you’ll ever watch. Excellent work by Ewan McGregor as Danny, Kyliegh Curran as Abra and Rebecca Ferguson as Rose. I especially loved the final return to The Overlook hotel which pays a fine tribute to director Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 masterpiece. Finally finished watching Mike Flanagan’s latest collaboration with Netflix, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, and it’s another fantastic show from a modern master of horror. Each of Flanagan’s Netflix projects have been dark, eerily atmospheric and hypnotically engaging, and THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER is no different. It boasts a murderers row of actors who have worked with Flanagan before, as well as Mark Hamill in one of my favourite performances that he’s given. I’m not well versed in Edgar Allan Poe’s written work, but I greatly admire his macabre mind and how much his work has influenced film and literature. Flanagan takes plenty of Poe’s stories and his ideas and blends them into a single coherent narrative that feels engaging, creepy and thematically rich. Flanagan has always been such an interesting filmmaker because he never settles for what’s easy or what’s simple. 🐦⬛🪦⚰️🐈⬛ I just want say that Mike Flanagan's Fall of the House of Usher was woeful, decadent, coruscant, elegiac, and inspired. I've watched a lot of adapted works of Poe, and I've witnessed greatness. Flanagan's attention to literally every detail, superb writing, acting, and the visual accoutrements of magical memento mori; left nothing to be desired. I was completely fulfilled, as an English major (yeah, yeah, laugh it up), and Poe enthusiast. It was initially difficult to start watching because the goddamn literary references and Easter eggs were so overwhelming, however, once you fall into Flanagan's world, it is impossible not to feel as though a raven were perched upon his shoulder, urging the creation along from beyond the veil. Ennesimo capolavoro firmato Mike Flanagan, forse la sua opera più ambiziosa ma quella che conferma senza il minimo tentennamento il suo status di Maestro dell'horror moderno 💯 Dopo il buon ma non eccelso risultato di "The Midnight Club", Flanagan si confronta con un mostro sacro della letteratura quale Edgar Allan Poe e crea a partire dalle sue opere un racconto dell'orrore che affonda le proprie radici nei peccati dell'uomo e le conseguenze che essi generano senza alcuna possibilità di redenzione: ciascun Usher, accomunati da sfrenate ambizioni e da uno stile di vita immorale tutto fuorché leggiadro, si ritrovano infatti ad affrontare la morte nei modi più dolorosi possibili e a confrontarsi con qualcosa di diabolico che solo il finale riuscirà a rendere concreto ai nostri occhi 🤩 La maestria di Flanagan, regista di quattro degli otto episodi, e dei suoi collaboratori sta nel trasportare il genio di Poe ai tempi nostri e innestare le puntate di citazioni, omaggi e richiami alle sue grandi opere, come "I delitti della Rue Morgue", "Il gatto nero" e "Il pozzo e il pendolo": il risultato è una serie monumentale, raccapricciante e dotata di un fascino malsano che ci mostra il disfacimento di una famiglia che ha voltato le spalle al bene e ne paga il caro prezzo ❣️ Da applausi il sontuoso cast che accomuna aficionados delle opere targate Flanagan come Henry Thomas, Samantha Sloyan, Bruce Greenwood e Kate Siegel e nuovi arrivati, come un eccellente Mark Hamill e Mary McDonnell. Horror Drammatico Soprannaturale. Non ci metteremo a fare tecnicismi o riferimenti a Shining, Kubrick e S. King. Daremo il nostro umile punto di vista su questa pellicola. Innanzitutto questo film è inquietante, più che per l’ambientazione, per la crudeltà dei personaggi. I cattivi sono incredibilmente reali e cattivi. Naturalmente la sceneggiatura è ottima, anche se c’è forse un po’ di abuso di alcune scene cult. Da fan è stato molto bello rivedere Dan Torrance e sua madre. Attori bravissimi. Regia assolutamente di livello e una buona fotografia. Riassumere la storia in due parole è complicato perché è King e il film dura due ore e mezzo… Dan è diventato grande, cerca di tenere a bada il suo shining e di mettere in ordine la sua vita sbandata. Abra, una ragazzina speciale, sarà il tramite tra Dan e i membri del Nodo.
