The good times rolled on last night with BOB STIRNER and The DEAD ALCHEMISTS, Live at Dharma Bums 4/20. I had the honor and pleasure of filling in on sound again for the great Larry Levin. The band kicked ass as they always do, and the crowd was definitely psyched to devour their favorite band’s music. Some excellent musical highlights and a very well selected setlist. Greetings friends. After years of sitting around and hauling an unfinished piece from house to house, I finally managed to finish this one off once and for all. The idea came to me after talking Kerouac with an old colleague of mine at Whole Foods, sometime around 2013-14 or so. I can’t quite remember what led to him saying it, but he blurted out the phrase and it stuck with me since. ••• As a Kerouac geek it just got to me. I went home and found the image I used to apply to the painting, but I wanted to figure out a way of executing it without having to freehand over some grid that I couldn’t figure out how to scale. I had the stencils for the letters done and ready, but I couldn’t figure out the picture. And thus, it sat for years unfinished. ••• This past autumn I saw a Netflix doc on Andy Warhol and was reminded of the fact that he used a projector to trace his images onto canvas. After seeing that the idea hit and the rest of the painting eventually worked itself out over the last few months. The image is technically a stencil that I found on the internet, which made tracing is that much easier (though it feels like cheating a bit 😂). Life lessons from the city street windows. I used to be obsessed with Kerouac and his beaknik crew of poet wanderers. I read all of their books. I even followed their trails down through Big Sur and read poetry on the same cliffs they wrote it. I went to the bars that were the hippie meeting places of the beat generation (the good bad and terrible all happened here). Kerouac practiced Buddhism alongside many other faiths. He meditated but also got into a lot of mischief. His story is one of the great seeker generation. And walking past this sign this morning makes me so happy for the decades of yoga and mindfulness trainings I’ve done and the poetry I’ve read and even the wild wanders I had in my youth that all worked together to lead me to my sweet little spot of service in this world today ❤️ #beatnik #dharmabums #ontheroad #yogateacher

I was in my twenties, freshly single, and ready to forge my own path in life. I was called to venture to the hallowed ground of a writer who inspired me and unveiled truth in a powerful and moving way, a way that only quality literature is capable of. The beat generation writers forever changed my perception of the world around me, captivated my intrigue, and ignited an ever growing passion to write. Honoring him on his birthday by re-reading The Subterraneans. A moody rainy day novel. In between i’m pondering beat writers like Diane di Prima, Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Elise Cowen, Denise Levertov, Jack Hirschman, and Richard Brautigan…among others, with a reminiscent sense of nostalgia. I’ve noticed that particular writers resurface when I’m in certain phases of life. I feel the energy of transition and an exciting, though intimidating, pull towards the unknown. An American novelist and poet born Jean-Louis Kerouac March 12, 1922 in Lowell, Massachusetts to parents of French-Canadian extraction, Kerouac's classic American road novel On the Road is cited by Robert Pirsig himself in Lila as a culture-carrying book for the Hippie movement, and is often compared to Pirsig's novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Published in 1957, On the Road was a landmark of the Beat generation and the Counter-culture that followed. Typed on a scroll that allowed Kerouac to continuously write on a typewriter without stopping to load paper, On the Road captured the hedonism and disenchantment of the Beats, documenting jazz, poets, and drug use on a road trip over three weeks. Kerouac's second novel The Dharma Bums would share with Pirsig interest in Eastern philosophy and Zen Buddhism, but Kerouac was stung by criticism of his novel from Buddhist leaders.
