On this night in 1981 Mute Records hosted a special evening entitled 'Mute Night, Silent Night' at The Lyceum in London. The show featured Depeche Mode ("Three synths and a singist ... accompanied by some severe outbreaks of dancing, they pumped out a set of rhythmic attractive pop," the NME's Paul Du Noyer reported in his review the following week), Palais Schaumburg ("They're electronic and, I suppose, experimental, but play with an advanced sense of fun"), Furious Pig ("The Pigs are a sort of shabby barbershop quartet who shout and bang things and walk around in a line and that's about it."), Fad Gadget ("Five willowy young fellows, dressed as morris dancing harlequins ... musically they represent electronic music's hooligan element. It's an energetic, entertaining set, well-stocked with decent material") and Non who was unable to attend in person and reportedly provided his performance via a telephone held up to a microphone instead... Tape of the week #67 This week’s choice is The Fad Gadget Singles, a collection his of singles for Mute. I have always loved Fad Gadget / Frank Tovey, but until reading up on this compilation, I didn’t realise that a) “Back to Nature” / “The Box” was the second single ever to be released on Mute Records in October 1979 and b) Frank died of a heart attack in 2002. This compilation is a great example of early Eighties electronic ‘pop’, although the songs here - notably Saturday Night Special - are far from pop tunes. My favourite Fad track, State Of The Nation, isn’t on here, but this is a fantastic selection of Gadget tunes. To have done it with someone they looked up to artistically such as Fad Gadget was pretty awesome for Depeche. Both being signed to Mute records it was perfect. Unfortunately I do not have the magazine the Flexi disc came with, I did print up a bootleg cover with the artwork from the article. Finally I have some B-Sides and some 7“ Versions I did not own on CD. But definately the highlight of this Compillation are the Discs 9 and 10, that feature a lot of Live-Tracks (Fad Gadget, Yazoo, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds) a few of them released as B-Side Tracks already, some Tracks from Radio Sessions (Yazoo) and to top it all, the Live Gig of Rbert Rental and The Normal (aka Daniel Miller) at the West Runton Pavilion from 06.03.1979. Your local Franchise Glitz Dealer has been hiding out for these last few weeks, but he is still alive. April is chock-a-block full of 40th release-iversaries, so there is much to think about. It's also the 40th anniversary of my first trip to London (which meant first time flying). I have many great memories of that adventure and my theoretical love of the city became an actual experiential love. I'll write all about that later, I promise. It was also when I bought my first copy of Record Mirror. Yes, the very one I'm holding. My horizons were broadened by just flipping through the pages, reading the snarky reviews, glowing write-ups, and dazzling ads for bands I'd never heard of. The one standout was The Wake's "Talk About The Past." The review and the band photo intrigued me. It took me years to find a copy...maybe 5 or 6 years. It did not disappoint and The Wake earned a spot in my list of top bands. THIS is where that all started. I promise to write about my long search for it soon. (SIDENOTE: I still don't have the original 7" so I'd be delighted to no end of one if you would mail me a copy.)
