7 dialect songs of the Danish Yellowhammer - my stop motion animation film poem 'syvsanger // sevensinger' was screened last weekend at StAnza Poetry Festival (St Andrews, Scotland) Scottish connection reinforced also by botanically dyed leger page, used in the film, which I made with the help of @chrissieseye & @withsandie at our artist retreat on the Island of Bute in the studio of @ruthslaterartist Scottish Island of Bute & Danish Island of Møn, where I saw the titular Yellowhammer - the island I first visited in August 2020 (also because I couldn't travel to Bute). Mustangs, or The Ballad of Gideon Light opens this Thursday, 14th March at 6pm at Ulster Presents Art Gallery, Ulster University Belfast Campus. At the entrance to Block BC on York Street. All Welcome. Mustangs, or The Ballad of Gideon Light is a photography/ poetry collaboration between Northern Irish filmmaker and photographer John T. Davis and Belfast-based Canadian poet Kathleen McCracken. This exhibition brings together black and white stills of the American West selected from Davis’ archive and excerpts of text from McCracken’s long poem sequence about a shapeshifting wanderer named Gideon Light, also known as Mustang. In the small gallery you can read Kathleen’s complete poem as a slideshow including additional still images (dur. 26’) and watch a new film poem directed by John T. Davis (dur. 25’38”). The photographs in the exhibition were taken in 1984, during the recce for Route 66, Davis’ creative documentary film about America’s iconic highway. Below my submission description. From my field notes: Typical Yellowhammer song lasts 3 seconds; the full song structure, which attracts stronger territory defence, includes the shorter high sound and the longer low sound in its final phrase. In Denmark, where I live now, Yellowhammer (Gulspurv) is known to count to 7 & there are 7 Yellowhammer dialects. Only 3 can be distinguished by our human ear. Female Yellowhammer chooses for her partner a male who speaks her dialect. Yellowhammer is also known as Scribe/Scribble Lark/Writing Lark (because of the scribbles on this bird's eggs). My film poem uses stop-motion animation to translate my expressive calligraphy (including the phrases: ‘yellowhammer song dialects’ and ‘hum’), fibre, botanically dyed vintage ledger sheets and loose old book pages into a celebration of one rare encounter. On 15 May 2022, on top of a bush among the grasses of Høvblege (in the Møn UNESCO Biosphere, Denmark), rested Yellowhammer. I was lucky to spend a few minutes in this bird’s company, since the population of Yellowhammers in Denmark has declined rapidly (between 30% to 50%) due to uniform farming, reduced edge zones, fewer stubble fields in winter and fewer invertebrates during their breeding season. Three years ago, we were commissioned by @northernirelandoffice and @csillatoldy to voice one of two characters in a film poem for Holocaust Memorial Day. It was one of the most emotive projects we have ever worked on. Sinéad Lunny voices the character of a mother talking to her son in a concentration camp in which there are two queues. Csilla created such a haunting and heart-breaking film poem wherein the mother is desperately pleading with her son to stand in the line with his brother in order to save his life. The queue that the mother is standing in has a hopeless outcome and so she is desperately trying to save her son. When I first saw my Dad's pit lamp, it took my breath away. His stories of traveling deep into the mines are almost otherworldly. We're lucky he made it back up. هیچ چیز از زندگی نمیدانم مگر از طریقِ سینما ■ آخرِ سالِ میلادی، لیستهایِ بهترین فیلمهایِ سینمایِ جهان از نگاهِ منتقدان و مجلات سینمایی در حالِ انتشار است . همیشه حسرت میخورم چرا در شعرِ ایران، منتخبِ بهترین آثار را نداریم . اتفاقِ شعری در حد چاپ چند کتاب بدونِ سانسور به شیوه الکترونیکی را البته داشتیم؛ که قابل توجه است . هر اثرِ هنری و سینمایی در بالاترین سطحِ خود، در نهایت میتواند شعر نامیده شود . خوبیِ دنیای سینما، در این است که با دیدنِ هر فیلم، حداقل چند نقد و ریویو و گفتگو میخوانیم و میبینیم . به همراه امیر وزین، در جلسه سینماشعر، رویِ برخی فیلمها گفتگوی انتقادی داشتیم که در کانال تلگرام شعر بی پایان( @vasazi) منتشر شده است . َ ■ منتخب فیلمها - آثاری که در سال ۲۰۲۳ ، دوست داشتم و دارم : ۱. روزهای عالی ( Perfect Days ) از ویم وندرس ۲.فیلم Enys Men ، به کارگردانی Mark Jenkin ۳. نمایش ( showing up) ساخته کلی رایکارد ۴. زندگیهای گذشته ( Past Lives ) اثر سلین سونگ ۵. بلوط پیر ( The Old Oak) ساخته کن لوچ ۶. آناتومی یک سقوط ( Anatomy of Fall) اثر ژوستین تریه ۷. حریم ( Sanctuary) ساخته زکوری ویگن ۸. باربی( Barbie) به کارگردانی گرتا گرویگ ۹. استروید سیتی ( Asteroid City) ساخته وس اندرسون ۱۰ . نبودن ساخته علی مصفا ۱۱. فیلم " هستی خدا جونم؟ منم مارگارت " ( Are You There God? Its Me Margaret ) . به کارگرانی کِلی فرِمون کریگ ۱۲. جنگل پرتقال به کارگردانی آرمان خوانساریان نکته : پایانِ سال میلادی است . تا پایانِ سال خورشیدی خودمان، فیلمهای بیشتری دیدهام که به لیست اضافه میشود. چطور میشود، از سکوت و سکون، فضای خالی و نیروی حالِ فیلم Perfect Days ساخته ویم وندرس گذشت و انرا ندید؟ شعر-فیلمی که عرفان کردن را در سینما تصویر کرد .گرترود استاین در جایی میگوید: "قدردانی از سکوت به قدر کافی برای همه نیست. Jurystatement: The film "Talking to a survivor", based on a text by Erich Fried, gets to the heart of the essential human problems of Western society today: alienation from nature, alienation from oneself as alienation from love. The poetry film tells the story of a man who works in shifts at the Glock arms factory in Carinthia and neglects his farm. It is criticized from the perspective of a child. The film shows that people produce weapons and how the traditions of farming are dissolving in the background. Behind the Carinthian landscape idyll, the threatening death idyll of weapons production is revealed in the final scene as the quintessence of our diverse self-destruction. When two human bodies touch, a silent, unwritten "history of proximity" emerges - a dance through time, fleeting yet enduring.
