This is the High Cross... No, not the Leicester shopping centre. But the 18th century monument built at a historically important crossroads - where the Fosse Way crossed Watling Street. High Cross marked the central point of both Anglo-Saxon and Roman Britain, although actually stands around 8 miles from what is thought of as the centre of Britain today. This restaurant was built next to the existing Station Lane Garage in 1974 and traded under the Little Chef brand until 2005. Down to the Gloucestershire/Warwickshire border now for a visit to Rowborough services on the A429 Fosse Way. The site dates back to at least the 1960s when a filling station was built next to Rowborough Farm. The Stretton-on-Fosse branch of Little Chef was then added on land adjacent to the filling station in 1976, trading here under the brand until 2005. The filling station has operated under various brands over the years and later became @shell_uk branding in the 2000s. The Little Chef restaurant went onto become various cafes and restaurants before becoming a car sales showroom known as Cotswold Cars until 2020. Since my last visit in August 2022, the site has gained a @nisalocally store. Up into Warwickshire next for a visit to the former Tredington branch of Little Chef where the former A34 meets the A429 Fosse Way. This restaurant opened in 1974 on the former site of the Channings Cafe and Truckstop and traded until 1997. The site has since become known as Tredington Park, with several businesses trading from the site including Robinson Goss Vehicle Hire. Chedworth Villa was built between the 2nd and 5th centuries and was one of the most impressive villas in the whole of Roman Britain. Situated in what now feels like a remote tranquil valley, its location near the major Roman road known as the Fosse Way and the key town of Corinium (Cirencester) was anything but remote in its heyday and whoever lived here must have been very wealthy and important judging by the scale and opulence of the complex. However sometime after the Romans left Britain, the villa was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. By Tudor times a thousand years later, it had become reclaimed by nature and lay completely forgotten under the ground. That changed in 1864 when a gamekeeper came across some fragments of mosaic tiles which led to the site being rediscovered. We’ve had it from new, having bought it to enable us to ferry the four children over the channel and explore France and Germany, Wales and Scotland. We know every scrap of its history. • FOSSE WAY • The word Fosse is derived from the Latin fossa, meaning ditch. For the first few decades after the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43, the Fosse Way marked the western frontier of Roman rule in Iron Age Britain. It is possible that the road began as a defensive ditch that was later filled in and converted into a road, or possibly a defensive ditch ran alongside the road for at least some of its length. Fosse Way still exists. In places it is a major road, in others a country path. The A46 between Lincoln and Leicester is on the Fosse Way. From Bath to Ilchester the A37 follows the Fosse, and from Ilchester to Exeter the A30/A303 roads follow the Fosse for the most part. It is remarkable for its extremely direct route. From Lincoln to Ilchester in Somerset is a distance of 182 miles. The road is never more than six miles from a straight line. Place names with words like -cester or -chester are derived from the Latin castra, meaning ‘military camp’. ‘Street’ is derived from the Latin strata, meaning a paved road. This week, I’m in the East Midlands and I’m starting the day at @welcomebreak Fosseway services just off the A46 near Bingham. Since my last visit back in January 2022, the site has gained a new @greggs_official pod to improve the food to go offerings here. Sadly, the new Greggs pod and the main sales building suffered major damage from an arson attack on Christmas Day 2022, with the blaze gutting the entire shop. The site has since reopened with fuel payments being taken from a portable building at the back of the forecourt. The Greggs pod also continues to trade here. We're in Wiltshire at New Barn Farm which is a superb @candmclub CL in a lovely part of the country. A warm welcome, hard standing, fully serviced pitch, with spotless shower and toilet facilities as well. We are currently on our third night, this is definitely a site we will be coming back to. It's 100 yards from the Fosse Way, it's near Tetbury and Malmesbury which are both lovely towns, Highgrove and Westonbirt National Arboretum are just up the road, , and there's lots of lovely pubs not far away. “All roads lead to London” 📸FujiFilm XT5 • XF 23mm f2 WR I love this part of town so much. I love the small local businesses, the housing and the bustley walk in to town. The architecture of these grand Georgian terraces like Beaufort, Grosvenor and Kensington are the first sights of Bath that many visitors see and I love to capture them on a grey day. London Road is part of the famous Fosse Way, the Roman Road from Exeter to Lincoln. But the origins are lost in the mists of antiquity. There would have been a track along the Avon as far back as the Stone Age but the Romans created the Fosse Way between 43 and 51 AD so the road dates back then. When you think of the history that went by over the years it’s incredible. The road to Aqua Sulis must have been busy with both civilian and military traffic, and Emperors visiting Britannia like Hadrian, Septimus Severus and Constantine the Great would have visited Bath, coming along the Fosse Way. In 973, Edgar, the great-grandson of King Alfred, was crowned as the first king of all the English at Bath Abbey. London Road, as we know it would probably have had urban development as far out as the present ESSO petrol station. By the 1770s farms and cottages gave way to grand terraces like Walcot Parade and Walcot Terrace. Buildings appears in 1789. No doubt Jane Austen walked along the London Road on her way to Marshfield. Stow-on-the-Wold is a place of magic and history. Originally the site of a Bronze Age camp, the original settlement—Stow Camp—was destroyed when the Roman’s built one of their great roads, the Fosse Way. Today, motorists drive on the modern version of this ancient road to reach town. Settled on the highest hill in the Cotswolds, the 15th century tower of St Edward’s Church is visible for a distance and is quite imposing. Originally built in the 11th century on the site of a Saxon church, the north door (circa the 13th century) is flanked by two ancient yew trees; they are said to be the inspiration for Tolkien’s Doors of Durin. During the English Civil War over 1,000 royalists were slaughtered or imprisoned in the church, and the main street leading from Market Square was named Digbeth Street, meaning “Duck’s Way.” There was said to be so much blood running down the street that ducks could bathe in it. England’s Oldest Inn, circa 947 AD, sits on Digbeth Street and the King’s Arms in Market Square still boasts the typical feature of a coaching inn—an arch leading to the stables. The sheer amount of inns is funny, given that the most prominent residents of medieval Stow-on-the-Wold were sheep, but I guess even sheep need a place to rest their fluffy heads. When this photo was taken on 02.02.12 the ford was still usable, though it was fenced off shortly afterwards on account of Roman remains being found in the river. I'm told that in the 80s and 90s you could call a phone for permission to ride across the aerodrome, though this courtesy had long ended by the time I arrived. WINNING UGLY CAN BE BEAUTIFUL 💙 // It’s 6 points from 6 as Leicester continue their winning start to the championship. It wasn’t the prettiest and we had to grind out the result after some solid tactics from Huddersfield who sought to defy us…but we got their in the end. As Enzo said, the key against the sides who will try to stop us playing is to create chances and to take at least one of them when it comes. That’s what we managed to do and I think there will be a fair few of these tight games away from home where we only come away with a point. So to grab all three yesterday was brilliant 🙌🏻. It’s not perfect yet, and I stand by my plan to make a full assessment of things in mid-October when Enzo will have had a few weeks with his own players and also Coady back in the side. However, the sign of a good team is picking up wins when they’re not playing that great so this all bodes well for the season. It’ll be interesting to see how the next few weeks pan out transfer wise. Let’s get Casadei in this week and hopefully a right winger follows shortly after. I’d still love a new striker and creative midfielder alongside them too. We also need to make sure that Wout Faes stays at the club. Hopefully Enzo has convinced him that this is a project and set-up worth being a part of. He’s going to make the odd mistake, but he’s also going to be a rock in that back 3 and a crucial player for us.
