An absolutely blindingly good day trip down to some of my favourite coastline with some bloody good (Jako Dobra) men - @boris.ra @frank_bronco - last weekend. A walk from Beesands over to Hallsands to see the village that fell down the cliff and have a lovely dip in some joyous water, managed to find an extremely rare giant cockle shell which apparently was one of the biggest ever found at around 15 inches or so… although weird fish eye filter on Franks phone displaces the absolute grand scale of it. Met some friendly fishermen after who told us an old fishing saying -‘it’s not the size of the boat but the amount of brutal damage it can do to lots of peoples marriages’ … strange old nautical phrase which must be a metaphor for something or Celtic or whatever. Absolutely love this part of the world and the walk and swim was absolutely glorious. A walk today along the South Devon coast from Beesands to the largely lost village of Hallsands, destroyed during a storm in 1917 (at least partly the result of dredging to create the docks at Plymouth). I last visited four years ago, since then further erosion has made access to the viewing platform impossible; it's only just over a decade since you could walk amongst the ruined houses. Photograph #70 Filling your lungs with crisp, fresh air is the perfect way to recharge those batteries, and a bracing walk along the South West Coast Path is pure escapism at this time of year. Such dramatic views across Start Bay and yet a powerful reminder of the destruction an angry sea can do to all in its path, especially on that fateful night in 2017 when the sea claimed virtually all of the fishing village of Hallsands.

The Lost Village of Hallsands, South Devon. On 26 Jan, 1917, the fishing village of Hallsands was lost to the sea in a violent storm. However it was really a human-made disaster, due to years of coastal dredging without understanding its consequences. In 1895, the Admiralty decided that the Royal Navy dockyard in Plymouth should be extended to accommodate the increasing size of modern warships. To accomplish this, dredging began offshore from Hallsands to provide sand and gravel for its construction. Up to 1,600 tons of material was removed each day, and the level of Hallsands beach began to drop, much to the alarm of local residents. Villagers tried everything they could to stop it via protests and petitions. The dredging license was finally revoked in 1902, but the damage was already done, with the sea creeping up from 21m to just 1m away at high tide. A stronger sea wall was built in 1906, but it couldn't hold the water back in 1917. Miraculously, all 79 residents managed to escape to higher land. Many families, having lost everything, relocated to neighbouring villages North Hallsands and Beesands. Only the highest house in the village (circled in photo) remained habitable. In 1918, a government inquiry concluded that dredging was the leading cause. However, embarrassed by its findings, it refused to release the report until after the Second World War.
