Well, it's taken most of the day but we now have the awning up with the new 'extension'. We found we rarely used the awning last season due to the fact that it became a dumping ground. This year we've bought the extension where we can store our kitchen items, our shoes and coats. Leaving the main awning as an additional room to enjoy and relax with a TV etc...... Torcross - Dartmouth While I’ve walked this home stretch in parts before, I’ve never done it in one go in the right direction. So given I was holidaying at home, camped out at Strete Gate for the weekend, I decided today was the day. The first 4km were totally flat along Slapton Ley, which I’ve swum and cycled many times, but halfway along realised I’ve never actually walked the final bit of! As my hiking pal James rightly said - a shocking oversight!! There was then a steep-ish climb up the cliff to Strete, followed by Stoke Fleming, with the familiar sight of the Start Bay sweeping behind me. I could look at that view all day long. I stopped for an ice cream and a new cap at Blackpool Sands, then climbed out the other side of the valley up to Little Dartmouth. The fields were colourful, full of Spring flowers. As I wove round the coast, I could hear the water lapping below me, so couldn’t resist a dip at Sugary Cove. My first mid-hike dip in far too long! Refreshed, I rounded Dartmouth Castle and walked down into town, meeting @greenwood.pat for an obligatory crab sandwich at the end. 17km at 4.6km p/h - this was a good distance to wear in my new trail shoes. . . Sunday 5th May Slapton Sands - an unexpected bonus! After the beautifully memorable wedding celebrations yesterday, we spent a lovely couple of hours with Jo, Phyl and their friends at their house today. They were both happy but shattered so we said our goodbyes and left them to leave and quiet and a chance to reflect upon the magic they’ve just been though, before starting their exciting honeymoon on Tuesday. With blue sky and sunshine in abundance again today Jani I headed for Slapton Sands on the Devon coast, and with that, a surprise and very welcome bonus of a sunny swim in the clear waters above the pebble beach. I asked a local family about potential dangers before doing a super swim out to the marker buoys - another ‘proper’ swim where I mixed heads in and heads out breast stroke, front crawl and even backstroke! The temperature was lovely - I just floated around when I got back to the shallows. I only had a tiny towel I’d borrowed from our apartment and the boxers I was wearing, but it’s all I needed! I’m happily boxerless now in the Start Bay Inn eating the largest cod and chips I’ve ever seen let alone tucked into! Almost exactly 80 years ago on 28 April 1944 Exercise Tiger, one of a series of large scale rehearsals for the D Day invasion of Normandy took place on Slapton Samds in Devon. Coordination and communication problems resulted in friendly fire injuries during the exercise and an Allied convoy positioning itself for the landing was attacked by E boats of Nazi Germany’s Kriegsmarine resulting in the deaths of at least 749 American servicemen. In 6 weeks the 80th anniversary of D-Day will be upon us. Today, April 28th 2024, doesn’t hold the same historical gravitas for most, but it should. 80 years ago, just 20 miles south from where I live, a quiet stretch of beach known as Slapton Sands, was the location for a full-scale dress rehearsal for D-Day - Operation Tiger. After months of training, elements of the force that would be landing on Utah beach set sail from Dartmouth harbour on the night of April 27th in an Easterly direction to Lyme Bay. At that point they made a 180 degree turn and headed back, intending to arrive at Slapton Sands, which was a few miles back West of Dartmouth, at around 6am on the 28th. The idea, to simulate the same time of day, and time on the water as would be the real event a few weeks from then. Unfortunately a flotilla of German E-boats that were on patrol at the time spotted the the convoy (which were fully loaded with vehicles, fuel, ammunition and men), and torpedoed several of them. Needless to say it was carnage. Men trapped inside the cramped LSTs were burnt alive, and drowned. 749 American servicemen lost their lives - many of them from the Engineer Special Brigade - which would be more than would be killed on Utah on D-Day itself. Due to the secrecy surrounding these exercises, no information was released of the disaster for fear of revealing the intended location for D-Day. In fact, it wasn’t until 1984 that full details of the catastrophe were revealed, so highly classified that they were. Today, I attended the service at Slapton Sands, in remembrance of those who lost their lives prematurely that fateful night. When considering the human cost of D-Day, it should be remembered that 749 had already paid the ultimate price for this Operation just 6 weeks earlier and must never be forgotten - like they were until 40 years ago. At Slapton Sands there is a memorial to the 749, which is represented by a Sherman tank. The exercise ended in tragedy due to attack by German S Boats, with hundreds of predominately US Servicemen’s lives lost in the night of 27-28 April 1944. Exercise Tiger 22 - 30 April 1944. Training at Slapton Sands turned deadly with the decision to use live ammunition, breakdown of communications between British and American vessels, and undetected deadly E-boats. Casualties suffered during the first days of the exercise were high but those inflicted by the E-boats were greater. Exploding LCTs hit by torpedoes, soldiers drowning due to not being properly trained in the use of their life preserver belts, or succumbing to hypothermia in the bone chilling channel water was the deadly combination. The estimated casualty number is 749 up to 946. Strict censorship about the catastrophic exercise was enforced. It was a pleasure to attend a ceremony last week at Slapton Sands to unveil a new cairn which commemorates the US servicemen who lost their lives during Exercise Tiger. This has been a labour of love for Teddy Cranmer, who has spent a great deal of time over the past four years researching the tragedy that took place in April 1944 while troops rehearsed for the D Day landings in South Devon. As 2024 marks the 80th Anniversary of these events, Mr Cranmer chose to erect a memorial to mark the deaths of the men who lost their lives and are not recognised in the nearby Slapton Sands Memorial plaque. The cairn, which can be found by Strete Gate car park, is a suitable commemoration which will stand the test of time and remember those remarkable soldiers who put their lives at risk to protect our freedoms. #exercisetiger #ww2 #ddaylandings #southdevon #slaptonsands
