Day 2 - Porlock to Lynton Start time: 9:40am as had to get bus from Minehead to Porlock Finish time: 4:10 at Lynton Distance: 18k Elevation: 924m Weather: persistent rain, low cloud/mist and max temp of 11 Quite a tough day today. Lots of hiking through woods on a wet, muddy and slippery trail I was thankful for my poles as they saved me from landing on my arse multiple times. Next a series of calf burning steep ascents and descents on wooded valleys known as Combes. The path emerged from the woodland at about 12k onto open cliffs where I was blasted by an arctic wind coming off the Atlantic. Honestly felt like winter except for the green on trees! I even had my gloves on all day. A remote day with no villages or facilities on route. I was pretty relieved to reach Lynmouth and then cover off a final calf burning climb to Lynton and my room for the night. Very happy not to have to camp and I was pretty wet, muddy and bedraggled. Dinner and half of Tribute 🍺 at the Crown. Chatted with a few other SWCP hikers today. Day 2 update! ☀️Ooo hello sunshine! Nice of you to show your face! I don't have any pretty photos from the last few days because it's been constant road walking! Not fun for my feet which have now given me a lovely blister! After hearing about how awful the section from Lands End to St Ives is, I decided to head inland towards Penzance. However, most routes were overgrown with gorse and brambles. This meant that the whole day was on the road after Sennan. I stayed at the YHA campsite which was nice enough, And meant that I could use their kitchen rather than my gas. Today should have been another day of road walking to Hayle, but after the road walking yesterday I decided to get the bus Inland towards st. Ives. It also meant that I had a bit of extra time so that I could pop into a pharmacy to get a bite seen to. I then walked from there to my campsite, catching the bus for the very last section of A roads. Having arrived at my campsite nice and early, I've taken it as an opportunity to dry out my tent and some of my clothes and just have a chilled one ahead of a very big day tomorrow! 🥾 Tomorrow is the day that I finally join the Southwest Coastal path, which I'm very much looking forward to! I'll be on it until Barnstaple where I'll part ways to head inland once again. Today I start walking the South West Coast Path (SWCP), the UK’s longest National Trail winding its way around the 630 mile (1014k) coastline of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall from Minehead to Poole. I’ve got 4 weeks to walk which won’t see me reach the end, but I’ll see how far I get. I’m camping with the odd pub or airbnb room for respite along the way. Today’s 6.5 miles on the coast path was from the hotel to Kynance Cove and was walked mostly in a mud bath. It also came with torrential rain on the most exposed headland which made me both wet and disorientated so I couldn’t see the path route and I ended up in a field where the only way out was under barbed wire and through a bramble hedge (see leg for evidence!) There was an alternative to mud walking….. using stepping stones made of soapstone so after the rain they were quite slippy…. I only recall 3 falls. A hop, skip and jump (ok, 5 miles) from our front door along the South West Coast Path brings you along the stunning Jurassic Coastline to the Smugglers Inn, which serves food all day and is a welcome pit stop along the path. You can either keep going, towards Durdle Dor and Lulworth Cove, or you can turn around and enjoy the walk home to Weymouth. SWCP Instow, more boats left for the tide to consume, yet so close to the Instow Yacht club, it seems almost criminal. Walking through Instow is definitely a highlight of this section of the coast path, with its nod to the past, in the form of the Instow railway station. Opened in November 1855, the station closed to passengers in 1965, but the line remained open for freight until 1982. The signal box has been preserved as a working attraction. The Atlantic Coast Express used to go through the station on its way to Torrington. In some years, longer trains extended to Eastleigh and Yeovil. Yes we have a nearby town called Beer! it's not actually named after the drink but for 'Bearu' meaning grove. With it's rich history, traditional fishing vessels, lovely cottages and beautiful chalk cliffs it's well worth a visit. Beer stone was quarried from caves nearby for many important buildings and the tour of the caves is quite an experience!
