We mourn the loss of Richard Serra whose collaboration with Jim Jennings of Jim Jennings Architecture, San Francisco, culminated in the design of our visual arts studio, the Doyle Sculpture Studio 50. The block and translucent polygal cottage was conceived as a composition of four cubes. A solid living cube, an open courtyard cube and two translucent cubes providing a studio space for the artist. These four spaces differentiate function and material while holding together as a unified whole. Pulling ideas of lightness and heaviness from the work of Richard Serra, the structures delicately balance these two positions through material and composition. Grief is not just about bereavement. At its core it is a process we go through to help us work through and integrate CHANGE AND LOSS. All change has loss attached to it, even good changes. Itโs the same with decision making- to choose something means to NOT choose something else. To step into changes we need to let go of the old and say goodbye to places, people, things, ideas and even parts or versions of ourselves. This can be painful and we can feel a lot of conflict inside due to this loss. Itโs hard to accept that we feel two conflicting states inside us AT THE SAME TIME. We can feel confused and even guilty for feeling loss, especially when the change is an upgrade or something we want, have worked hard for or even been gifted. This can leave us feeling like we need to hide aspects of ourselves and put on a happy face so that we donโt appear ungrateful. Our grief needs us to allow it to be there and to feel the sadness, heaviness and loss. It wonโt stay there forever, it is helping us integrate this change.
